Written by the company

At the RSPCA, we’re proud to be there for every kind— from pets in need to wild animals who need urgent care. Every day, our dedicated teams work tirelessly to protect animals, prevent cruelty, and offer hope in situations that are often distressing and complex. As a charity, we face difficult decisions about how to use our limited resources, and we must prioritise the most urgent and serious cases of abuse or neglect. This sometimes means we can’t attend every call, no matter how much we wish we could. When we’re unable to be there in person, we’ll help in other ways—offering you support, directing you to organisations that can help fast, and, when it’s safe, empowering you to take an animal to a vet. These shared efforts truly make a difference. We’re incredibly grateful for the kindness, patience, and support shown by the public. Together, we can continue to speak up for animals, protect those in need, and build a better world for every kind.

They won’t come out for anything

Never come out even when you send them images of proof, of a dog being left in its own mess on a 5x5ft balcony shut out day and night, starving and eating its own mess to survive. Apparently that’s not bad enough for somebody to rescue it. Shameful

Dear AMC

Thank you for leaving your review and sharing your concerns regarding the dog you reported. We truly appreciate you looking out for an animal you believed was in distress. We’re deeply sorry your experience didn’t reflect the care and compassion you expected. Every animal matters to us, and we’re working hard to improve how we communicate our limitations and provide guidance even when we can’t attend in person.

For us to look into this we’d ask that you get in touch on this website form:

Thank you for taking the time to share this — it helps us improve.

They don't answer -found an injured swan and no one can help.

Called the wildlife line as found an injured swan on the side of a pavement, was not moving when approached but was very distressed and clearly not in a good way. I didn't want to leave it but can't go near it myself. I was waiting in a queue, got through to number 1, phone rang and then put back in to the queue again. This happened 3 times. How can they expect to rely on the kindness of people to call and try help save animals when they don't even want to pick up the phone.

Hi

Thank you for leaving your review and sharing your concerns regarding the difficulty you experienced in contacting us. I can assure you it’s not that we don’t want to pick up the phone as our call handlers are answering the phone line non-stop daily between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm. There must have been a technical issue just at the point you called, which is very unfortunate.

We truly appreciate you looking out for the injured swan, so please don’t let this put you off contacting us in future. We wouldn’t recommend that the public transports a swan, so it was the right thing to try and get through to us for assistance.

Best wishes

Call centre staff rude

Rang the call centre to report a neighbour who is keeping 10's of dogs in a kennel (unregistered, personal use) and has 3 cages of birds, around 20-30 birds per cage. Clearly hoarding animals and potentially beating the dogs as I've heard shouting, dogs crying and then silence. The dogs used to get transported in a van to a field where they were walked. Haven't seen the van in over 9 months or the dogs so I think they are in the kennels all day every day. The woman I spoke to couldn't have cared less, made me feel like I was doing something wrong for reporting, said "well how do you know the dogs are distressed." I said "I have a dog and I know what a cry for food or attention is. Those dogs are crying from neglect and often cry for hours at all different times of the day." She had a real attitude and tone of voice which came across as accusatory. I understand RSPCA are busy, but it's distressing living next to a house where they are clearly abusing animals. The woman made sure I understood she didn't think it was a priority.. sorry I didn't realise you were the judge for what animal abuse constitutes as. Wish I took her name so I could avoid her in the future as I won't let this drop. A few days after reporting, I received a phone call from a Private number (I will not answer private numbers like most people) and my phone did the automatic voicemail and someone on the line said "RSPCA" when asked who's calling... but then failed to leave a message? Incompetent to say the least

Further from the RSPCA answer to my…

Further from the RSPCA answer to my last post, why bother with your mandatory excuse email. Its pathetic, I have had to listen for a second day to a bird in distress in a drain and you couldn't care less as the time saving animals and birds would mean you cannot make your begging adverts for funds as quick.
Even the fire brigade said they can only come out if you ask them to.
Pathetic organisation, my payments have been cancelled, and I know a few other people who have agreed to stop funding you. Hopefully you will run out of funds and some can go to another organisation who ACTUALLY CARES for animals.

There was a stray cat in my back garden and she was there and wondering about for 4 years and I would feed the cat and I told rspca and they told me to take the cat
To the vet and the cat had no owner and was in poor state and she ended up pregnant and I rang rspca and when I asked what could I do they couldn’t take her so I told them I can’t take her in I have 4 cats of my own and they said well just leave her and I said she’s going to do die and they said cats can survive outside etc and I told them she will die and guess what she died and so did her kittens and I hope rspca know they are the reason of that they advertise and put them selves out as if they are doing well for animals but don’t do nothing for them animals I don’t remember the date or month but I remember this was before December so therefore I have put down a date as you have to put a date down to let this review out

Hello Asmaa

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns, and I can understand how upsetting and frustrating this would have been. It's so sad to hear that the cat and her kittens passed away.

As a charity with limited resources, we have to prioritise the most urgent and severe cases of cruelty and neglect. This means there are times when we’re not able to take the action people hope for, even though we’ve carefully assessed the information provided.

If you ever have concerns again about how something you report has been handled, please do contact us straight away on the website's service complaints form below so that we can look into the matter:

Thank you so much for caring about the cat and seeking help for her.

Hi Gabby,

Thank you for your review. We're so sorry you felt let down when you tried to reach us. We understand how distressing it is to see an animal in need. In order to help as many animals as possible we will always ask people to take action to help small sick or injured wild animals themselves if they can by safely transporting them to a vet, rather than waiting for the RSPCA. That’s because it’s the quickest way for thousands of wild animals to get the urgent help they need. Every time a kind member of the public helps a wild animal, it frees up our specialist rescuers to reach animals suffering from cruelty and neglect.

You can find more information on this page of our website about how to help the bird including how to find a local wildlife rescue centre:

Rubbish

The RSPCA won’t go to most call outs, they tell you to contact tiny sanctuaries and rescues with less resources and money. They’ve gone right down in my estimation 😡

Hi Sarah

Thank you for getting in touch and for caring about the dog you reported. We’re really sorry that your experience left you feeling frustrated — it’s understandable to feel upset when you believe an animal may be at risk.

The reality is that we want to help every animal that needs us. It’s why all of us at the RSPCA do what we do. But as a charity, our resources can only stretch so far, and with hundreds of calls coming in every day, we have to focus our small team of officers on the most urgent cases of cruelty and neglect. That means there are times when we can’t attend as quickly or as often as people hope — and we know how frustrating and upsetting that can be. It upsets us too.

We’re also limited by the law, which means we can only step in when animal welfare legislation has been breached, even if we might personally wish we could do more.

We work with a variety of local rescues across the country and appreciate the incredibly valuable role they play in helping us rescue and rehabilitate thousands of animals each year.

It's through the power of working together – animal lovers, dedicated charities, veterinary professionals, and local authorities – that we can collectively provide swifter and more widespread help to more animals.

Best wishes
Emma

Disgraceful

Disgraceful. The RSPCA used to be good years ago. They don't care about animals they only care about your donations. They don't deliver any services, there are no pet services and they wont even come out for injured wildlife either. They only help when there is a camera on them for publicity or when they want donations. Don't give them nothing.

I have only called twice and both times absolutely zero help. I don’t even know how this organisation exists when they won’t help trapped animals or animals at risk. No wonder they have an average of 2 stars. They might as well just shut the doors and all go home.

RSPCA waste a lot of time and don't come back you, and they also keep the same rescue cats reserved over a month long counting for other people while there is a big backlog of new rescue cats still waiting to come in to take their place. We've decided go elsewhere to other charities.

Hi Martin,

Thank you for taking the time to share this — it sounds like a really frustrating experience, especially when you were trying to offer a cat a loving home.

It’s most likely that you applied to adopt the cat from an RSPCA branch. Because RSPCA branches are independent charities, we’re not able to look into their enquiries or complaints from the national office. Each branch manages its own rehoming applications and communications, so the best way forward is to contact the branch directly.

You can find their contact details here: https://www.rspca.org.uk/whatwedo/yourlocal

If you choose to email, adding “For the attention of the Branch Trustees” in the subject line can help your message reach the right people.

If you think it was a national animal centre your applied to, or are unsure, please get in touch with us by filling in our complaints form here and we’ll be able to advise you:
https://www.rspca.org.uk/utilities/contactus/complaints/form

Thank you again for caring about adopting — we know how much it means to the animals waiting for a home.
