Misleading sales pitch - VAT refund

I made a large purchase at icewear Artic Explorer in Reykjavik on July 12,
2023. Was a visitor in Iceland off Cunard
ship. Signs all over store indicating VAT refund available. I was hesitant at first, however was assured by staff in store that VAT would be reimbursed as customs
agent would be available at ship prior to our departure. With this in mind spent more money then intended. Very
disappointed that the VAT refund information was not correct and I felt that staff openly
used this as a sales pitch to encourage sales. Icewear is a huge business
in Iceland , and I feel victim to the sales pitch. I spent the amount of money expecting a VAT refund that apparently is only available at
airport. Customs officer are not mandated on departing cruise ships. I wrote to Iceland government and wrote complaint to Icewear asking for the amount I should have received in VAT refund as a credit to my card. This was not considered and I was offered a gift card instead. I don’t want to spend more money at Icewear. Shame on Icewear for taking advantage of visitors to their country.

Hi Christine,
We're sorry about the misunderstanding surrounding the VAT refund.
We were informed wrong about how VAT is handled onboard cruise ships and we are correcting how we tell customers about Taxfree.
All tourists have the right to VAT refund, but when traveling by cruise ships the ship has to arrange for customs to pick up the refund forms.
We hope you otherwise liked your trip to Iceland.

Kind regards

I wanted a lovely Icelandic jumper…

I wanted a lovely Icelandic jumper while on travels in Iceland. I really liked the patterns and was especially attracted to the Ásbyrgi for the design, cut and materials. However it did not work for me. I emailed Icewear and Björg wrote back almost immediately with several alternative jumpers. He went out of his way to help. When in Reykjavik I looked at the alternatives he had suggested and found Pjórsärver waiting for me. It’s perfect: same pattern, same cut, lovely deep cuffs on the sleeves. Björg was so helpful in customer services and I have a jumper I love which is warm, soft and stylish. I’m delighted. Couldn’t have done better

Cycling in comfort during the winter

As someone who grapples with Raynaud’s phenomenon, I decided to give up gloves and go with mittens, more specifically, the Kaldi mittens, which are insulated with Icelandic wool, as when I cycle in cold weather, my fingertips become numb with a prickly feeling or stinging pain upon warming.

Though I got them toward the tail-end of the winter season, so far, they have made a tremendous difference. They have brought warmth and a sense of well-being when cycling in cold weather.

In addition, the customer service was stellar. I had a hiccup with delivery, and the customer service rep who helped me could not have been any more helpful, pleasant, and attentive.

I highly recommend Icewear.

The website claims the sweaters are…

The website claims the sweaters are 100% Icelandic wool. The one that I bought for almost $200 which gave me a huge rash when I tried it on. I'm not allergic to anything so I took a more careful look at the sweater. It turns out the sweater was made in China. I had it checked it out and it turns out it wasn't the 100% Icelandic wool I was promised. It wasn't even wool. It was 100% recycled polyester which is perhaps the most unclean materials. Icewear should be transparent in where they make their products. I don't want to spend $200 for a sweater made in Chinese sweatshop from cheap materials, that is an insult. If you want to outsource, do so in a country that is known for and where you can control the quality assurance process. China is not one of those countries. I threw the sweater away because I don't want other people to get poisoned the same way I was.

Shockingly disappointing for the Money

I was very, very disappointed with the quality of the jumper I ordered. I didn't feel it represented good value for money, it wasn't anything like what I expected and I'm unfortunately left with no birthday gift for my husband as I spent all my money on this jumper! I emailed the company to say how disappointed I was and asking how to return the item and still haven't heard back, after several days. The item arrived very quickly, which was great, but sadly, that is the only good thing I have to say about it and it now looks as if I'm going to have to pay a fair amount of money to return it. Definitely wouldn't recommend this merchant at all, sadly.

I recently received two sweaters that I purchased from their site. I haven't worn either yet, but they look great. After ordering, and before the items arrived, I contacted them about a pricing discrepancy that I believed I was entitled to. After contacting customer service, they said they would look into the issue and get back to me. Two days later they contacted me, agreed with me, and credited my card for an additional $65. I had initially only gotten a 10% discount of $40. At the end I ended up with a total price adjustment for $105 less than my original list price. Needless to say, I think the customer service division was 5 stars!

My delivery with DHL was excellent too. They were great 👍

Sweaters are made in China

Sweaters are "designed in Iceland" but they're actually manufactured in China. Additionally, their return policy is very difficult. If you can't get them to send you a DHL label... and you go into DHL yourself, the shipping costs are so high that you might as well keep everything that doesn't fit. The Elís sweater is extremely itchy and the fibers would shed onto my fleece jacket when I tried layering it. If you're into itchy sweaters and can successfully get them to send you a DHL label, then this is your store. Otherwise, look for a store in the US that sells Nordic style wool sweaters and has an easier return policy.

Nice jumper, correct size, delivered incredibly fast to UK by DHL. I'd like the product to have been slightly heavier because it wasn't cheap, but I'd shop there again. One observation - the labels say it was designed in Iceland, but I can't see where it was actually made.....

Excellent experience with my first order

Very happy with my first order from Icewear (having visited their store in Reykjavik and regretted not buying anything while I was there). My order was received extraordinarily quickly, considering getting anything delivered from outside the UK seems to be a massive hassle nowadays, and I didn't feel that their shipping charges were too unreasonable.
The quality of the hoodie I ordered seems very good and the sizing was exactly as I expected, after using the detailed sizing information on the website.
I will definitely be placing further orders through the website in future, at least until I'm able to return to Iceland and buy in store!

1) the wool is in no way Merino

1) the wool is in no way Merino. It's scratches and itches on the skin. Not the quality promised in the marketing BS

2) Their return process is for the toilet. Period!

3) because of 2) having to write off 170 Euro.

Decreased quality

I have used Icewear for a number of years. I initially stumbled upon them by chance and was surprised by the quality of the wool used on their men's Icelandic wool jumpers, and I mean immense quality - fibre length, strength, loft, water repellence. I tend to use wool vs synthetics for outdoor sports and these jumpers were some of the few which were up to the task, hence £100 plus was a good investment.

However, over the past 3 years the quality seems to have decreased to the point where they are now no better than anything else out there, if not worse. I hope the company can return to their previous quality. Currently they are probably not worth the hassle and cost of having sent from Iceland.

£45 to return a jumper that is not as described

I ordered a fairly expensive merino wool jumper. Size is good (I was careful to check in advance), however I can't believe this is really merino wool... it's the scratchiest wool I've ever seen / felt.

So now I'm returning the jumper - at a cost of £45!!!!!

My advice - find a UK supplier with free returns...

Terrible

It is one of the worst experience. Bought a parka on the website it says waterproof I received as a water repellent. I asked them to correct this mistake and they said they corrected it on the website and they thanked me!I asked refund and they stopped writing me. On the other hand the quality of the parka is too poor. It is a very ordinary Chinese parka, even it smells Chinese!

Unbelievable hassle

I really regret ordering from this company. First of all, the website is quite poor and doesn’t work well on an iPad. It keeps resizing itself in a weird manner so you have to keep reloading it. It’s easy to miss items because you have to keep loading the page for more options and you won’t see all the different colour options until you select a garment and move into the description.

The sizing is a nightmare because they tell you they are European sizes but that doens’t really mean anything as French and German are different, and Scandinavian sizes are usually in accordance with the French way of sizing. So going with my personal experience I decided Small was probably an equivalent to 8 and Medium more like 10-12. I did a lot of research to see whether my assumption matched the measurements given on the Icewear website but there was no consistency and I came up with very weird in between sizes. I once before asked customer service about all this but they told me to measure myself, well that’s a bit of a tall order as I have very weird measurements that don’t fit a standard model. Whether I fit something or not depends on the way the garment is cut, not the chest-waist-hip measurements. So for instance I would fit a boxy, straight cut size 10 but not a slim fitted garment size 10. I definitely would not fit anything size 8-10, for instance. So in order to judge whether I’ll fit something or not, I really need more detailed descriptions of the garment and Icewear doesn’t provide any at all (e.g relaxed it, regular fit, slim fit - descriptions other companies use which do help). Sometimes the material composition is missing, too.

I ended up ordering several sweaters size M and some of them fit well while others are too big. I also ordered a unisex sweater and sized it down to S, which was perfect. In addition, I ordered a couple of men’s sweaters (because I liked the style) and S fit me quite well (only the arms were a bit long). XS which you would think would suit a small person like myself was too small.

I placed quite a big order, and that was a huge mistake. I had seen a notice about getting 20% off but couldn’t find any information and had to ask customer service. They responded after a couple of days and said I needed to create an account. So I did, but I still didn’t get the code. So the next day, customer service tells me to check junk mail for the code. Of course I had already done that but it wasn’t there! At this stage, I was losing my will to live and in retrospect, I wish I had just given up. But I finally got the code from them and proceeded with my order.

I faced a huge import duty despite the fact that Icewear claims on their website that you don’t have to pay it and I paid the £62 to cover shipment and duty. You have to go into a more detailed description, the fine print, to find that it only applies if your parcel is under 5 kg. Well I call this misleading advertising. I just had to swallow it and be grateful the 20% discount covered the import duty. Customer service weren’t knowledgeable about this and asked me to send proof twice before they acknowledged that they couldn’t help my order was over 5 kg... Somehow I just didn’t feel that my efforts to place a big order with them was in any way appreciated.

I should also mention that the 2 for 1 offer wasn’t very clearly marked on my final bill and it was difficult to check the amounts because of the way they separate VAT from the garment price.

So I received my items in the post. Many of the colours didn’t match the photos on the website, which are really poor. I had gone into Instagram to try and get an idea of the products but there aren’t that many photos there. It’s surprising since the company has existed since 1972. For instance, a sweater described as black is actually dark grey, and a red sweater sometimes shows in the picture as a strong red and sometimes as a kind of burgundy. I had to return a couple of Brynja sweaters that were too big and not really of a satisfactory quality (apparently they were hand knitted but just seemed flimsy to me and the shape was awkward). A pair of brown socks were simply a very ugly bright brown (impossible to tell from the photo). I was also going to return a blanket but found that my parcel would cost around £100 to return! At this stage, customer service offered a returns label but no further instructions. I’m sitting there wondering how to send it off. The following day, customer service tells me to arrange the collection myself. I have absolutely no idea how to do that with DHL and cannot find any such option on their website. I’ve exchanged countless emails with customer service and spent over a week or more worrying about the return, and have sadly lost my patience with this company.
Edit: I didn’t get import duty refund due to DHL failing to supply EPU and import duty no!

Excellent customer service

Excellent customer service
High quality product
I am extremely pleased with my purchases (Icelandic wool sweater , Nordic cotton sweater, blanket)
And when I have contacted customer services the replies have been prompt friendly and professional
Ok , I have read reviews about cost of returns etc and I did have to return one sweater but that was personal preference because I wanted a looser fit ,but ultimately the product and service is so good I consider that worth it

Great customer service

Bought a Norwegian Jumper from the website after visiting Iceland. Had some trouble with the confirmation of the purchase so wrote an E-mail to Icewear. They answered within a day and even continued the correspondence through the weekend even though they on the website say, that they will answer the following workday. Great customer service.
The product has nice features and is nice looking, but I miss a little more body shaped sewing.
