SpaMedica is one of the leading providers of NHS eye patient services and, in 2018, we became the largest NHS cataract surgery provider in the UK. Beyond cataract surgery, other NHS ophthalmology services offered include treatments for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO), which is treated through a procedure known as YAG laser capsulotomy.

SpaMedica in Poole were very busy on the day of my first cataract replacement. The staff were all great, still helping with every aspect of the treatment, still a smile and encouragement even though it was Friday afternoon. I was warned my eye could be scratchy, gritty and maybe watery, but none of that happen. I can see the television and walk round the house without glasses, I have needed for 63 years. Cannot wait to get the other eye done at SpaMedica. Thank-you so much a revelation.

I had a cataract procedure at SpaMedica Bolton this week. I can honestly say that from start to finish their care and professionalism was absolutely wonderful. I was extremely anxious on the day but the staff, theatre staff and consultant were so kind, explaining everything to me, and even giving me a designated hand holder! Thank you so much to everyone at SpaMedica Bolton.

Had to make an appointment for my Mother and she is being seen next week so no treatment yet but I had to comment on the exceptional service we had from Elizabeth, to those in charge she is a total asset to the company and from someone who has been in sales for 45 years , I wish every company had some Elizabeth’s.

I changed my mind about surgery and cancelled my appointment. A few weeks later I was called to rebook, said I was not interested and would call them if I changed my mind. Another few weeks later they called again I told them the same thing. Called yesterday and I told them again. Called again today to reschedule and I blew up. I was told they would not take action till I went through security. I said I was not wasting any more time and hung up.
UPDATE.. They called again at 8.50am the next day, that’s every day for three days.

Excellent service, my cataract surgery took about one and a half hours from walking into the clinic to leaving.
Nurses and consultants were brilliant.
The surgery took place in the Birmingham clinic.

I always find it incredible that the general public have so little idea on how our heath services are run, Dorset NHS trust for instance is in the bottom 3 of 215 in England for performance and outcomes.
Again the general public seem to think that because a GP, Consultant, Nurse or whoever who has been so kind and understanding when seeing them that this will follow on with excellent treatment to address their illnesses and ensure there well being.
Yet this is not he case at all far from it you have more chances of the opposite happening normally in fact you have more chances of dying in a corridor that getting proper health care if you live in Dorset.
Dorset NHS Trust is doing all it can to avoid patient care, and has been now for a number of years hence why its overall performance is so dire.
To get a simple X-Ray result in what used to take just days now takes a whole month in Dorset as there imaging services have been farmed out, this common practice in Dorset for near on all of its vital services that provide patient diagnosis and treatment.
So now we come to Spamedica who state on their website and I quote
Get back to the things you enjoy most SpaMedica is the UK’s largest provider of NHS cataract surgery, helping patients receive treatment quickly and safely, with excellent patient outcomes.
All cataract surgeries at SpaMedica are carried out by registered ophthalmic surgeons, either by a consultant ophthalmologist or a registrar under the direct supervision of a consultant.
Yet what the public and patients are not told is that the registered ophthalmic surgeons, or consultant ophthalmologist who they see are in fact not Sparmedca members of staff at all.
The ophthalmic surgeons, or consultant ophthalmologist Spamedica use or can hopefully get to work for them are in fact self-employed and turn up on the day for an agreed set fee.
The last consultant I saw had come all the way from Bristol to Dorchester in Dorset as SpaMedica could get no other ophthalmic surgeons, or consultant ophthalmologist nearer to turn up.
Again the time I’ve been see or had treatment comes to around less than two hours yet I’ve like many I have been sat for hour upon hour upon hour while waiting to see someone.
Its now coming up a year and I still have yet to get my cataract treatment finished and I was one of the first to attend Dorchester when they opened.
At one time I was put in a empty room and I sat there for just over a hour and half before I was eventually seen by some one.
The worst was being sat along with five others in a corridor space of 8x10 feet with no ventilation at all, you could not even put your feet out as it interfered with the person opposite. It was dire.
So now we come to SpaMedica and there:
Get back to the things you enjoy most SpaMedica is the UK’s largest provider of NHS cataract surgery, helping patients receive treatment quickly and safely, with excellent patient outcomes.
This is a complete and utter lie, currently at Dorchester which has been open for less than a year you have now a three year plus wait for to get your cataract surgery competed.
This time frame increasing weekly due to the simple fact that just one consultant operates (if that is they can get one to turn up) on patients just one afternoon a week. Yet they are signing on new patients six days a week hence the now three year plus wait to get ones treatment completed.
As for problems you might have despite my poor health I’ve been having a number of real and serious problems which have come about due SpaMedica treatment to date all of which they have done nothing what so ever to help me.
So there you have it and no you are not going to get back to the things you enjoy most once you step inside their door far far from it.
Oh did I mention I've had two appointments cancelled this month alone due to them being unable to get a consultant in to see patients.

Superb service from the Spa Medica team Telford. I can’t fault their care, professionalism and thoroughness from reception staff, diagnostics, nurses and surgeon. Yes there may be some delays waiting for tests etc but they are handled as efficiently as possible.
My personal view is the service they provide is considerably better than any NHS hospital would supply.

A few days ago I was driven to and from Portsmouth SpaMedica by the lovely Stacey. (I am a driver, but was having dilation drops in my eyes so unable to drive myself.) I was lucky to be the first "pick-up", so sat in the front passenger seat. Stacey and I had such a nice chat - she was brilliant at her job, and a very good, safe driver.
Oh, and the experience at the hospital was excellent too! Thank you all.

Underwent a cataract removal procedure on my left eye at Wolverhampton. I arrived on time and was seen by 1st nurse within a couple of minutes. Proceded through the process as forecast and was ready at expected time for collection by my daughter. Absolutely delighted with the service I received. All of the staff were helpful, friendly, professional, courteous and kept me fully informed throughout the whole procedure. Over a week on and I'm using the eye-drops as instructed The difference this has made to my sight is so noticable.and I can't wait to have the other cataract removed! 10/10 to SpaMedica in Wolverhampton.

My wife had cataract surgery 2 weeks ago at Chesterfield . The whole experience from start to finish was excellent, the staff were very helpful and professional. She now doesn’t need glasses and we can’t praise them enough

Excellent attention from start to finish, the receptionist on arrival, all nursing staff and the excellent Mr Davies who carried out my procedure, finally the pleasant caring nurse who provided me with after care information. I was extremely wary about having this procedure however my worries disappeared on meeting Mr Davies and my initial confidence was rewarded.
