Our problem with Pure Retirement is their COMPLETE AND TOTAL INCOMPETENCE, YES INDEED!!!!!!!!

Our problem with Pure Retirement is probably a little different to most in that we used them just three or four years ago and had no issues at all until now when we decided to move home. My mother in law died enabling us to buy the property from the family and it is of course really well known to us as it was built by my wife's grandfather for his retirement in 1960, so some 64 years ago, and so has been known to my wife since she was 5 years of age. We have been married for nearly fifty years and since appearing on the scene all those years ago I have always done any maintenance needed as I have practiced as a village painter and decorator and maintenance/builder and so know the physical building better than any one. Anyway we approached Pure Retirement with the view of continuing our agreement but they then told us that they could not continue as now the whole area has been said to be in a flood area so at risk and they will not lend on any such property. The flood problem in the village is there though the family property has never been even close to any flooding and I have never ever seen the garden remotely wet let alone flooded but we went along with them and their rules and asked and then paid the settlement figure of about £107,000 which luckily we could afford as we had been left some money by my mother in law so could. Our gripe is with the total incompetence that has since ensued. We are told by our solicitor that a mortgage still shows as existing on our property which of course doesn’t exist any more as we have paid it off some two months ago. This is now causing us problems with our buyers solicitor and the sale of our property and this is being caused completely by the incompetence of these people. I am now having 'prove' we have paid them off which I wouldn't have to do if they did their jobs properly. As and when this is all sorted I will return here and complete the story but for now I will just say this. If they are one of the better companies to deal with I shudder to think how bad the others are! My advice? Go elsewhere but be very careful!!!!!! Their customer care once they had lost their grip on our finances just disappeared. Incompetent is just one word that describes this shower and I would have loved to proceeded that word with a few others but my wife has asked me to keep it all polite, well I have for now! A little update for anyone reading. According to PR its the Land Registry's fault as they have been told of the removal of the mortgage but according to my solicitor who contacted the LR today asking for the update to be done ASAP it should be PR doing the asking so why hasn't PR realised that they need to speak to the LR again as their initial request/notification fell of deaf ears? So it looks like it is the Land Registry who are being slow to update things and I am sorry to have blamed Pure Retirement but I will leave this revue for the moment in place until it has been resolved.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. Having checked out records we can confirm that we submitted confirmation that the mortgage had been discharged to HM Land Registry on 9th June 2025, the same day we received the funds. This can be seen as a pending application on HM Registry and would be available to view by your solicitors who would also be aware of the registry’s timescales for processing applications. We would expect them to have provided this information to you, and we are disappointed that you were appear to have not been advised of this by your conveyancers.

Thanks,
The Pure Retirement team

Efficiency and courtesy prevail

This is not the first time I’ve had the pleasure of being in touch with Pure Retirement and their level of service and prompt actions are just as good as before. I was kept fully up to date with my application and the people I spoke to were informative and unfailingly pleasant. Great interest rates, too. Highly recommended.

Interest, Porting and post

Age Partnership (AP) recommended Pure Retirement (PR), six years ago, AP subsequently suggested each year to move to another Equity Release company with better rates. I've been paying off the interest on our 'loan' each month trying to minimise the impact later on. When I decided to change from PR, AP said they couldn't help?? We then decided to sell our house and use the 'Porting' scheme PR are so proud of. Truth is they'll do everything they can (or their solicitors, Enact will) to prevent you moving. "New build: has an outside company that will charge you maintenance fees to maintain the land, so we'll not be able to sell the house when you die". My answer was; "I can afford the maintenance fees and in any event the house owners can fire the 'outside company' if charges get to high". PR/Enact not interested, so we were forced to look elsewhere. Found a bungalow, Enact said, "not good, property is liable to flooding". Even though that area/road/property hasn't flooded in over 50 years! So Enact then decided the property was built on land that's liable to subsidence. Lucky I guess then that it hasn't subsided in the 25 years it's stood there, neither has any other surrounding property. The ONLY answer to ignoring PR and Enact was to buy a cheap place that gave us enough 'profit' to pay off our original loan. Not what we wanted but ANYTHING to get rid of these sharks. I can also support an earlier comment from a dissatisfied customer about PR losing paperwork. We posted two lots of paperwork to PR, both sent registered mail, yet they still denied ever receiving them, even though we showed them the receipts and proof of posting. We're not in the quality of house we wanted but we'll never have to deal with PR again and that's a blessing.

Hi Michael,

We’re sorry to hear that you’ve had a frustrating experience while attempting to port your mortgage. While we welcome people moving their mortgage to another property, it’s dependent on it meeting our lending criteria and passing surveying checks. Flood risk and subsistence reports are based on future risk as well as historical data and we’re unfortunately duty bound to act on the information we receive and judge whether to lend on the property accordingly.

If you want to discuss the matter further, or have any specific questions, you can get in touch via feedback@pureretirement.co.uk

Many thanks,

One point if I may.

I would welcome an explanation on how the interest rate on draw downs is decided upon.
Thank you.

Hi Peter,

The interest rate on drawdown is determined by the rate a new mortgage would attract at the time it is applied for. It is essentially a new loan on the rates available at the time on that particular mortgage product.

Hope that helps and many thanks,

Peace of mind in old age…

I am one of those elderly people assetvrich and cash poor. That is, I own my own house but my income is low Thanks to Pure Retirement I am living a comfortable retirement due to Equity release. Pure retirement have guided me through every step from my initial borrowing to fund a roof replacement. I borrowed more than required and left some for future needs I took a second tranche to replace a garden fence and have just taken the last amount to replace my dangerous patio. If I need further money in the future I will very happily use Pure Retirement again.
