Buying my first proper bike

Worked with Ellis and even after a mess on with bad phone signal he was never irritated on the phone at all, and considering its my first time getting a proper bike myself set up on finance he was super nice and helpful about it, the whole process just felt incredibly smooth as he was explaining everything and even gave me some really helpful options for my situation

I had Ellis give me a call after I asked about a bike they had for sale. That was all I needed to do. Ellis did the rest. His communication was brilliant, the way he went through all the details of the deal and everything about the bike it's self. Highly recommend Ellis and Bigmoto to anyone looking at buying a bike

Trying to remain fair, but concerns were had

I wanted to leave a fair and honest review of my experience with BigMoto.

To be fair to them, they did provide compensation for the inconvenience I experienced, so they did respond to my complaint. However, I feel it is still important to share the full experience so other buyers know what they may encounter.

Ordering the bike over the phone was actually very good. It was easy, straightforward and there was no major pressure or pushy upselling. At that stage, I was happy with the service.

I arranged collection for when the bike was marked as “ready for collection” on the portal.

Unfortunately, collection day was where things started to fall apart.

I arrived for my 9am appointment and the bike was not ready. It was buried amongst other bikes that had been sold that week. I understand dealerships can get busy, but if a bike is shown as ready for collection and a collection slot has been booked, I would expect it to be prepared and waiting.

Instead, the handover felt rushed. The bike was quickly cleaned, including spraying the belly pan to make it look shiny. Then, when they tried to start it, the battery was flat.

I was offered the choice of waiting for it to charge or having it replaced. They fitted a new battery, which was the right thing to do, but it should never have been an issue in the first place on a bike supposedly ready for collection.

What made it more frustrating was seeing another customer collecting a more expensive Harley. He arrived after me and left before me, despite apparently still needing to pay for his bike, while mine had already been paid for. It did leave me feeling like customers spending more may receive better service.

On the ride home, the bike felt unusually slow. It would only reach around 55mph, which did not seem right for a 125cc Aprilia—especially as BigMoto’s own listing suggested better performance and other owners report higher speeds. I initially gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought it could be wind, hills or general running conditions.

After a week of riding, it was clear this was not the case. I live in the Fens, so there are very few hills to blame.

After inspecting the bike myself, I found the drive belt and rollers were worn. Once I replaced them, the bike was transformed: it now reaches around 65mph, cruises comfortably at 60mph at around 8,200rpm, and fuel economy improved from roughly 58mpg to around 85mpg.

That is disappointing considering I paid £2,500 for the bike and had to spend more money sorting issues within the first week of owning it. These are basic things I would have expected to be checked before sale.

Would I buy from BigMoto again? Possibly, if they had the right bike at the right price. They are often among the cheapest, but in my experience that lower price comes with a trade-off. I would inspect any future bike much more carefully, ask more questions, and allow several extra hours for collection rather than expecting a quick handover.

Overall, the experience was not awful, and I appreciate that compensation was offered for the collection inconvenience. However, it fell well below the high standards BigMoto promote. They did not accept responsibility for the worn parts, and I did not want to ride the bike two hours back only to be told that “it’s only a 125cc” and potentially have nothing done.

In the end, I paid to fix the problem myself.

Hi Nathaniel, I'm sorry to read of your experience. We value all of our customers equally regardless of how much they have spent.
We gave the bike a polish when you collected it as it had been sat next to the shutter and got dusty. We're sorry that the battery had died, I'm glad we were able to replace it.
I believe the issue we had with the repair was that you had the work undertaken without authorisation from ourselves or allowing us the chance to repair. We are happy to look at this again, please can you email nickguy@bigmoto.co.uk and I will discuss with you.

My bike broke down on me so felt it time to change to something different called as I'd seen on on autotrader and had cash in the bank ready to go......
Only to find out the price listed wasn't correct as they add additional fee's....
They don't want to negotiate....
They don't want to accept card payments......
They don't have bikes ready to ride away....
They won't negotiate for the bike to leave same day and get paid
Very poor company and it happened twice. On the same day in different stores

Hi Brenden,

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review.
The prices we list are correct. We charge an admin fee on motorcycle purchases but this is waived for returning customers.
We price our bikes competitively so we do not need to negotiate on price.
We do accept card payments, the only exception to this is that we don't take credit card payments in excess of £500 over the phone.
We're not sure what you mean by 'They won't negotiate for the bike to leave same day and get paid'.
All of our stores operate the same policies and procedures.

We hope this helps, all the best in finding a new bike.

Great experience

I walked into the show room to look for a bike for commuting. Baz and Amy was amazing. Great customer service very helpful and made you feel comfortable.

After looking at many options and finding the right bike Baz went above and beyond to get me the colour bike I wanted. And got things moving smoothly,

The hand over felt special like it should when getting a new toy and I would definitely recommend big moto in Great Yarmouth for all your bike needs.

I will be back and will continue using big moto in the future thank you for all your help mick

Bigmoto bought and collected my BMW R1200RS for the agreed price.
SOS bike couriers did the collection, their friendly driver checked the bike over and arranged the money transfer before he left, all very straightforward.

Extremely poor service.

Writing on behalf of my father who had a very poor experience dealing with this company.
Firstly he was offered a ridiculously low part exchange price for his previous bike, which he decided to sell privately instead and made over £1000 more than they offered.
He purchased his new bike and the staff became annoyed due to him choosing to pay for it outright rather than financing it?
He was promised alongside their terms and conditions that his new bike would receive a new mot as it only had 3 weeks left on it at the time of purchase, according to their policy any bike with less than 3 months mot on it would receive a new one so it would be sold with a full 12 months mot…the bike did not get an mot and he has had to arrange and pay for this himself through an alternative garage…a clear breach of your own policy.
He was also advised that the bike would receive an oil change and a full valet before it was delivered to him, neither of these things happened either! He spent two days cleaning and polishing the bike to a respectable standard and has had to pay again to have the oil changed?! Very poor service from this place, once they have your money they stop caring. Please use a more reputable dealership if you want a new bike!

Your response states that you are in contact with my father, unfortunately this is untrue as he has heard nothing from you. Please provide an email address for me to contact you. Thank you.

Hello Tanya, I'm sorry to hear of your father's purchasing experience. We are speaking with your father to resolve the issue with the MOT and oil and filter.
When selling a bike you will nearly always get more money selling privately, remember that we are buying the bike to resell it so that we need to make money also.

Excellent customer service!

I was in the market for a used bike after my previous bike was stolen. Ellis, the salesperson, was very helpful, friendly, and answered all the questions I had prepared before I even asked them! He explained everything very clearly, helping me make good decisions about the optional extras without feeling pressured at all. Fantastic experience, and I look forward to delivery of my "new" (used) bike!

Not the best experience

Was selling a Ducati V2. Was originally offered £10000 which i agreed to. Arranged For collection and was told i would be contacted 30mins before arrival, I wasn't contacted.
After checking over the bike for 30mins the courier said the rear pads are a little low and the tire tread and a small bit of rust on the chain. General wear for a used bike. I then awaited Bigmoto to contact me with the offer. Didn't hear a word from them but the courier came back and said "they will give you £9000 for it!". Pretty poor communication and blatant lowballing from them. Complete waste of my time.

Hi David, to clarify: you made 2 applications to sell your bike. The second offer was for £9500 which you accepted. When we attended your address to collect the bike we found that the rear pads and tyres required replacement along with paint damage to the forks, none of which was disclosed to us. We reduced the offer by £500 to reflect this.
It is also a waste of our time and expense to come out to the bike and not purchase it. We wish you best of luck with selling the bike.
