The Office Manager at Maple Lane said…

The Office Manager at Maple Lane said your company reimburses fast and since I trust her, I decided to go with y’all.
I thought the rates were reasonable.
I wish I could insure the rest of my kitty’s but, we have too many as living out in the country, folks just dump kitty’s like they’re garbage! It’s infuriating!

I would not recommend Nationwide Pet…

I would not recommend Nationwide Pet Insurance based on my experience. I purchased pet insurance because I thought I was doing the responsible thing and protecting myself from large, unexpected veterinary expenses. Unfortunately, when I actually needed the coverage, I found the policy to be far less useful than I believed I was paying for.

My dog recently developed sudden lameness and required an urgent veterinary evaluation. I submitted a claim for $1,010.14. Nationwide processed it under “Cruciate Ligament Disease + Meniscal Involvement” and paid $0. They did not even apply any of the expense toward my deductible. What makes this especially frustrating is that a subsequent surgical evaluation ultimately determined that my dog did not need the cruciate surgery that had initially been suspected.

This was not my only frustrating experience with their claims process. After paying premiums with the expectation that insurance would provide meaningful protection when my pets became sick or injured, I reached the point where I could no longer justify continuing to pay for policies that I did not trust to provide that protection. I ultimately canceled coverage for both of my dogs.

I understand that every insurance policy has exclusions and that not every veterinary expense will be reimbursed. My issue is that pet owners purchase insurance specifically because they are trying to be financially responsible and prepare for unexpected medical care. Based on my experience, the coverage I received did not provide the financial protection I reasonably expected from pet insurance.

If you are considering Nationwide for your pet, I strongly recommend reading every exclusion and limitation in the policy—not just the coverage summary—and specifically asking how orthopedic conditions, suspected diagnoses, pre-existing conditions, and future related conditions will be handled before enrolling. I wish I had understood how little protection my policies would ultimately provide before spending the money on premiums.

I am a little confused on what happened…

I am a little confused on what happened when I enrolled my cat in this plan. My understanding is that he is not yet enrolled because he needs a check up to rule out any preexisting conditions. I do not know where to send the results of the check up and how to submit claims afterwards. Is there some app I should download or what? How does this work? I would have appreciated being contacted by a person to explain a bit more how pet insurance works in general and how I am to use it.

Signing up was easy

Signing up was easy, and I received emails confirming the signup, but I have yet to receive anything in the mail as stated in the emails. So I feel like there is not quite enough communication leading up to when the insurance coverage begins. I’m not sure when coverage begins at this point and I signed up almost a month ango. Otherwise everything has been great so far.

Shelly was helpful for most the call…except this one major bit

Shelly was helpful for most the call, but when asking about prior medical history, which we don’t rely have because we rescued this pet from the streets 8 months ago, she was insistent on talking over me when I was trying to explain why we took him to the vet in February. I had to ask if I could finish. He had landed hard onto his paw and was limping on it so we took him in on 2.12.26 and she wanted to suggest that he had potential skin allergies because I mentioned that the vet mentioned he had scabs around his neck. He was just living on the streets, abandoned, starving, and was fighting for his life. So yes, he had some scabs when we first got him. We do not know if he has other conditions, we have not had anything come up since his initial neuter, vaccines, disease testing, and the paw check when he landed hard onto the tile floor.
Agents should not be suggesting conditions that are not currently being experienced, or have been diagnosed prior or currently, by the animal. It’s not professional, and probably crosses some ethics lines.
