Studio Essentials : Aluminium Tilting Watercolour Field Easel and the Richeson : Wet Panel Box

In May, I purchased the Studio Essentials : Aluminium Tilting Watercolour Field Easel and the Richeson : Wet Panel Box. Birthday gifts needed for a very special occasion. DHL repeatedly let us and Jackson's down. Mary at Jackson's stepped in and made sure the delivery was made in time (through Fedex) and the occasion was saved! Both items were better than expected. The Easel was simple to assemble and effortless to carry. The wet box is as good quality in the flesh as it is in the marketing. Sublime. Jackson's remain our go-to for all our art needs.

Bizarre customer service

I bought a factory-sealed pack of 10 Half Imperial sheets of Arches 640gsm (300lb) Cold Pressed watercolour paper from Jackson’s in February. For those who don’t know, 640gsm is one of the heaviest watercolour papers available; artists pay a large financial premium for this specific weight so they do not have to stretch it.

Unfortunately, the first sheet I took out of the pack was defective. Under a heavy wash, it rippled like a sheet of 300gsm paper — usually, 640gsm just bows outwards slightly and then goes back to being flat, but this rippled badly.

I was actually on Jackson’s chat messenger at the time about a problem with a previous order when I asked about this issue. I sent them photographic evidence of this structural defect, and their response was strange, to say the least.

First, they said: “Our Stock Team has not received any previous reports of this issue. They also tested a sheet from our current stock and did not experience any buckling similar to what you described. The paper reacted as expected, even when a generous amount of water was applied. They took a photograph during testing, which I have attached for your reference.”
I have no idea how testing a sheet of their current stock (June) signifies that my paper must be fine (bought in February), especially as drying flat is the way every other sheet of 640gsm paper I've used has previously behaved. I am assuming that, even months apart, they used a sheet from the exact same batch I bought, as anything else would border on the farcical.

When I replied that this didn’t explain what the problem with my sheet was, they replied: “Unfortunately, we can’t provide a definitive explanation for what happened in your case, as there are many variables that can affect the outcome. We carried out our own testing under similar conditions and were unable to replicate the issue you experienced. Based on the information available and the fact that our tests performed as expected, it appears that this is an isolated incident.”

They then went on to suggest I try stretching it in the future and sent me a link on how to stretch watercolour paper. This is pure corporate double-talk. They claim it is impossible to know what happened due to "so many variables," but then immediately claim they "replicated the conditions"—and they did this on a completely different sheet of paper, not one from my pack! Unless Jackson’s sent a team to sit in my living room and paint a portrait on my actual paper, their "test" is completely meaningless.

I replied that I don’t think I should have to stretch 300lb watercolour paper, as I have used numerous half imperial sheets before and it has never reacted like this. They again replied with: “We appreciate your point regarding 300lb watercolour paper and that you have not needed to stretch it in your own work. Some artists do still choose to stretch heavier papers, particularly when working on larger pieces or detailed work that takes a longer time to complete, as it can help reduce movement in the paper and minimise the chance of issues developing during painting.”

I even sent them a couple of examples of my finished work to counter the inevitable “clueless hobbyist” defence, but they chose to stick to their script to protect their bottom line. Jackson’s used to be a trusted supplier, but after these last two experiences, once my account credit (£10 from this problem and some from a previous order) is finished, I shall be looking elsewhere for my art materials. I’ll also be looking at a different watercolour paper too; a quick look online following all this showed that a lot of people have been having sizing problems with Arches paper since they were taken over by Canson.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

We are sorry to hear that you remain disappointed with this experience.

After receiving your report, we raised the matter with our Stock Team, reviewed the information and photographs provided, and carried out testing on stock available to us. While we were unable to replicate the issue or identify any evidence of a wider fault, we appreciate that the sheet you received did not perform as you expected.

Although we were unable to determine a definitive cause, we added Reward Points to your account as a gesture of goodwill and invited you to contact us again should you experience any issues with the remaining sheets so that we could continue to investigate.

Kind regards,
The Jackson's Team

I ordered a large amount of coloured…

I ordered a large amount of coloured pencils from Jacksons art supplies polen. Unfortunately, one pencil was missing from the order.

I tried to contact customer service, but I could only reach an AI chat system. It was impossible to explain the problem to the AI, and after several attempts, I gave up.

As a result, this will be the last time I purchase art supplies from Jackson’s. In the future, I will buy my supplies in Denmark, where customer service is still handled by people rather than automated systems.

Considering the amount of money I spend on art materials, I believe it is reasonable to expect proper customer service. I have written off the missing pencil and accepted the loss, but I can only conclude that Jackson’s Art seems unconcerned about taking payment for an item that was never delivered.

Thank you for getting back to me. I will change my review as I find it very important that you reached out here. I did however find the AI assistant time consuming and difficult to deal with, it might be because it was in english which is my second language. Anyway I’m glad you did respond.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

We are sorry to hear that a pencil was missing from your order.

When reporting a missing item, it is standard practice for us to ask for order details and photos of the parcel and packaging. Our AI assistant helps gather this information quickly so that our Customer Service Team has everything needed to review the claim.

During your chat, the AI assistant successfully collected your order number, details of the missing item, and supporting photos. Once this information had been gathered, the AI assistant offered to connect you with a member of our Customer Service Team to continue assisting with the claim.

We were therefore disappointed to read that you felt unable to reach a person, as this option was offered during the conversation and helping customers with missing item claims is exactly what our Customer Service Team is here for.

We have received the information and photos you provided, and a member of our Customer Service Team has been in touch to help resolve the matter.

Although, when we reached out to you following this review, you advised that you did not wish to take the matter any further, we still wanted to make things right. We therefore offered either a replacement or refund for the pencil and added €10 in Reward Points as a goodwill gesture. Ultimately, we refunded the pencil regardless, as we felt that was the fairest outcome given that we were unable to complete our usual assessment of the order with you.

Kind regards,
The Jackson's Team

Japanese papers

I ordered Japanese paper, and based on my experience with such papers, I asked in advance if the papers could be packed very carefully and tightly. Unfortunately, they were not, and they were unusable when they arrived. Based on my documentation, I was offered a new shipment, but that was not possible because Jackson's was almost empty of this item. The reason for my good rating is the good and constructive communication that has been, the compensation I have been offered and the understanding I have been met with. The remaining lot that I could get was packaged correctly, and was in good condition upon arrival. I trust that the packaging methods will be well taken care of after this experience.

Jackson’s is my go-to!

Jackson’s is my go-to for any even remotely specialist art materials in the uk, their selection is extensive and their prices competitive. In particular, the customer service is second to none, and I was well looked after this week by Annabelle, who personally saw to it that my trouble with FedEx was not only addressed but quickly and smoothly handled, and it was a pleasure to deal with her. My positive regard for Jackson’s has only increased as a result. Recommended!

Excellent as always

As always, excellent service. Only 7 days from order to arrival, not bad as I live in Peru! I really like the packaging. It is really well protected and everything can be recycled.
Thank you.

Excellent service and products from…

Excellent service and products from Jackson's. I put my first order to Jackson's in for some Daniel Smith half pans and it arrived quickly. I received updates all along the way regarding the order process right up to when it would be delivered.
The products are top quality at very affordable prices. In fact I've found a new favourite watercolour paint brand. I tried Roman Szmal paint for the first time and fell in love with it so put another order in for more and now I'm building an additional paint pallet from his collection of colours. There's a large selection of different brands available from Jackson's I want to try also and I'm looking forward to exploring some of their colour blends

I subscribed to the 'Tips' emails that keep me updated with new products and sale items which are incredible value, there's always something too good to miss out on plus stories about art and artists that are always interesting to read.

The quality of products is high and suitable for beginners up to professional but the prices are in the affordable working bracket so something for everyones budget. I wish I had found Jackson's sooner but now I have it's my new ' go to ' place for my paint and necessary supplies. I genuinely recommend the company, the products are top quality with prices that are hard to beat.
