Love Hargreaves & been with them over 15 years. Really thoughtful & professional product & app but it is all premium priced so you do pay for the good service, so it should be expected. I think they... See more

Long waits for reply to secure messages.
Long waits for telephone calls to be answered and connected to correct person.
A pre-booked pension telephone advice call not made.
I have been with Hargreaves many years and service levels appear to be on the decline. Seems impssible to speak to managers despite manager sending secure messages.

Poor customer service, system went down, couldn't login, couldn't reach H.L. Sent an email and they have failed to respond.
Your system went down, end of, it did come back approx 20 minutes later. Not good enough when you want to trade the international markets. Furthermore, still no reply to my email complaint?

Most awkward financial services provider ever. Their website crashes ones a month on average. They don’t take any responsibility for that obviously because it’s written in their terms and conditions. Any 15 minutes IT job in fixing problems with accounts can take up to 3 weeks and only if you complaint every day. When you complain, mind you retaliation comes fast and swift. They make already inadequate services even more complicated and bizarre. I am dropping them whenever I am ready.

I do not often have the need to contact HL by messaging or phone but have always been impressed with their Customer Service. Never had to wait long to be answered on the phone and messages are replied to by following working day usually. Today I had a couple of queries about cash withdrawals and annuities. The first person I spoke to needed to transfer me and then the second person needed to put me on hold to clarify something with a colleague. What impressed me today is that during the "hold" between the music I received messages to encourage me to speak to (name given) who I had been on the call to about anything. This is a nice touch as too often I do not always catch the name of the person when they answer the call. Just reinforces my belief HL is in a league of its own for Customer Service.

Being able to talk to a human being on the telephone makes all the difference. Your people are always so friendly, helpful and professional.

I have been with HL since 2023 and overall, I am still with them with no plans of switching as they are great. However, I have categorised my experience so far in the points below. These points are subjective so I hope whoever reads this, will not take them as canon and try to make their own opinion first.
The great:
* easy to use platform, both on browser and app with key info easy to find and intuitive buttons for most common actions
* amazing amount of info which I can receive via email, with a lot of expert research behind it.
* great security features
* outstanding customer service team when the information presented on the platform is thin
* the no transaction fees direct debit feature just amazing/ saves me around £60 a month which can be then used to purchase more shares.
* great and easy way to reinvest dividends, just one setting and HL does it for me.
* Deal orders are easy to set up and execute as instructed.
The good:
* trades are easy to deal
* live prices where possible is great
* decent number of shares I can purchase, both UK and international
* interactive chart has good indicators
* portfolio overview section is good for a quick review
The bad:
* no possibility to create different portfolios/groups of shares within the same ISA. I like categories and I would like to split my Stocks and Shares ISA account into Investments and Speculative groups.
* without the direct debit option, the transaction fee is £6.95 which is quite a bit considering most platforms do not charge transaction fees.
* penny stocks prices once owned, only display up to 2 decimals. For example a penny stock that is priced at 0.0025 GBX will not display the price, holding value or average weighted price in my portfolio which I think it would be an easy fix for HL as they should allow up to 4 decimals.
* option to calculate the portfolio performance over a custom date is not present
* interactive chart settings and custom views do not save on exit (I might just not see the option but still valid as it should be easy to see)
All in all, I do recommend HL as your investing platform and I do believe for UK, they are the best, however, for charts and custom features, you will need other tools.

The Help Desk arranged a Pension Lump Sum (UFPLS) for me over the phone. They were very helpful and process was quick and easy. They sent me the application form pdf via secure message which I completed and posted back to HL the same day.

The mobile app has been revamped and in my opinion for the worse. Why has existing functioning been taken away? A simple item - onvyhe first screen sorting the portfolio by alphabet or percentage gains etc. Has gone. Alo getting other information needs more clicks. I suppose I will receive a message we are reviewing the site, but as usual nothing will happen i assume they save money taking away functionality.

Doesn't produce a realised capital gains report (unlike AJ Bell, Invest Engine, Charles Stanley, Fidelity) ... which makes the platform close to useless for taxable General Accounts (you have to analyse yourself from transaction history and my wife post me will have zero chance). Otherwise platform has more funds than anyone else, which is good, and is intuitive/simple .. also good. but the new shares graphs are terrible and i dont know why they binned to ucits type graph format.
Update: To add insult to injury their Artificial Unintelligence (ie real people) help desk provides a bovine excrement copy/paste response that "its not possible to calculate a TAX report without knowing your other circumstances" .... they must know i'm NOT asking for a TAX report, im asking for a REALISED HL gains report to HELP me calculate my TAX report (being fully aware and they could easily caveat that id need to make adjustments to those gains/losses in the unlikely even i was simultaneously holding/trading exactly the same funds on other platforms)

Very broad range of funds available. Great information provided about each of them. Unfortunately, though, they abruptly raised their costs in a way that seems exaggerated and careless. Buying or selling funds used to be completely free. All of a sudden, HL decided that each of those transactions would now have a cost. That's a shame, but kind of understandable. The big problem is that - contrary to what's expected in such cases - there is absolutely no capping limit for those costs and no decrease in price according to the number of transactions either (the more transactions, the lower their individual price should be). In other words, every time you reallocate your fund investments, you end up with a disproportionately high bill, whereas before the exact same actions cost nothing at all. No costumer should be made to pay £100, £200, £300 or more for simply buying or selling funds, which already have high charges and costs. That was a very poor decision, which made HL lose the trust of fund investors, many of whom have already left the platform. If you invest in funds, I unfortunately can no longer recommend Hargreaves Lansdown.

During the period my pension was held with Hargeaves Landsdown, I experienced three issues before I eventually took my pension elsewhere:
1. They set me a completely erroneous message about my drawdown which caused me some stress.
2. Their secure messages 'self-destruct' after three years so you have no record of them on-line.
3. Another complaint now no longer visible has been deleted.
The worst example of poor service however, was when I decided to move my pension elsewhere, at the same time as my Aviva one. It took Hargraves Landsdown 34 days to complete, whereas Aviva took only 8 days. They said this amount of time was "within the timeframe we would expect".
Now you know what to expect!
