Discriminatory Treatment at Customs

Discriminatory Treatment at Customs

It’s incredibly disheartening to see that even in Britain, racial bias within professional institutions is still rampant.
As a mixed-race British national, arriving from a British Airways flight from Florida with only a backpack and carry-on, I was yet again singled out for a luggage search on the way out from customs —my third time this year and it’s March! Fine!

The fact that I am continuously subjected to these searches is one thing however
(Personal opinion) water a lot of thought… it strongly suggests systemic racial profiling under the guise of routine security measures.

I preface this by saying the search and stop was not the issue! The professional conduct was the icing on the cake

The most shocking part? The officer conducting the search, a young white male, repeatedly used the phrase “you people” in a dismissive, hostile tone, saying things like: “You people always complain; you’ve no idea about our job, YOU people always have something to say” what a poor choice of words…

Such disrespectful and racially charged language has no place in any public service, this is unacceptable and unprofessional.

It is beyond unacceptable for an officer entrusted with enforcing security protocols to speak to travellers in such a derogatory and prejudiced manner.

It’s shameful that an institution representing Britain would allow such blatant racial profiling and discriminatory conduct to thrive. This needs to be addressed immediately

I expected better, a hell of a lot better.

Possibly the worst airport in Europe

Gatwick have not responded to a single review so that itself demonstrates thier complete lack of customer care and service.

Absolute disgrace, from rip off drop off charges which were £10 despite being parked for only 3-4 minutes. Apparently it’s acceptable to charge while waiting for parking and isn’t even long enough to read the signs regrading the parking rules.

Check in was good although this is done by the airline. Customs / security is by far the worst I have ever experienced with lack of attention, rude staff ushering people around and a complete disregard for actual security. By far the worst airport I have experienced within Europe and Americas.

Lane was closed, rude staff

Lane was closed, just sent to the next lane with everyone else. Staff very abrupt and rude, everyone was body scanned so a big queue formed and all the bags got jammed on the belt.
Not the stress free dedicated lane that was described and paid for. Just a bit of a scam.
Normally staff are very pleasant here but today they were a big disappointment. I appreciate it's a tough job but just a smile would be nice.

London Gatwick Airport

I'm at gate 5 in Gatwick airport and we are all sat on the floor because there are not enough seats for the passengers on a regular flight to Irleand. New security gates, which are not in use, to access gate 5 seem to have replaced seating. I'm sat with my arse on the cold floor in a corridor along with 30 other people. This is the RyanAir gate though...I hope theres more seats on the plane...

Gatwick airport amazing staff member.

Travelled from south wales to Gatwick. Made our way to North Terminal to be treated by the nicest man ive ever met. His name is Ruch (think that how it's spelt) he helped us in duty free, a few samples, really knowledgeable about whiskey. My partner was thrilled. He made the start to our holiday which was my partners 50th birthday absolutely perfect. Well done gatwick. The training he has had was evident. He was brilliant.

Just come back into the uk tonight via gatwick airport. I have travelled all over the world and every time come into gatwick it's like going back in time to 1945 with the SS checking my families passports. I know all about hi security checks from my background! But can someone tell me why all the families with children have to line up for hrs just to get my British passport changed. Just to staff on the checks tonight and asking silly questions to my Slovenia partner and my daughter. Gatwick is not a family friendly airport and the uk is going backwards with checking passports

immigration staff was being rude and racist

The immigration staff was super rude and being racist as my husband I approached to a counter. He raised his voice right away and asked “why are you come to the wrong counter, you know that you’re in the wrong line, why are you coming here.” But a guy right in front of us was also in the wrong counter. (My hubsband and I have international and EU passport) However, we actually didn’t know that was the wrong counter as my husband and I always come to the same line, and they just let us through every time we arrive to the airport. The staff could have just told us where is the line and we are at the wrong line and it’s so unnecessary to raise his voice and being so rude right away. They should have ton of trainings and should not hire whoever needed a job! He just ruined our whole holiday. They don’t even deserve a single star.

What an awful welcome to our country

What an awful welcome to our country it must be for tourists and a disappointing welcome home for me. Leaky airport with puddles forming - the solution being add a wet floor sign and ignore the issue. Unclean toilets. Staining and damage all over the airport. Ceiling tiles missing. Generally very unkept and badly maintained despite the charge for pick up and drop off. Poor signing for drivers and pedestrians to meet together meant multiple charges for driving through drop off or pick up areas. Very disappointing

Fast Track security

Fast track security.
I have passed through the north terminal Gatwick airport on 3 occasions since November each time I have used the fast track security lane which for most travellers comes at an additional cost of £6. Please save your money the system is not fit for purpose as on each occasion without fail I have ended up queuing behind other travellers diverted from the non fast track lane. I’m told this is done to mitigate congestion at the supervisors discretion. So if it’s busy pay your money and queue behind non paying travellers or if it’s not busy what’s the point.

If you advertise a premium service at additional cost then you should deliver it as described.

Abysmal service when they damage your car

I used Gatwick Airport South Terminal Valet Parking and while in their care they damaged my car.

I was really quite calm, given that we've all made mistakes at one point or another.

But the management compnay they use to manage the repair process are atrocious - FMG.

Their processes are email reliant. They give you access to a portal you can't access and ecen after three days they haven't sorted it out. They give you a repairer phone number that doesn't connect and their own phone number that doesn't connect you.

next time I will not be so accommodating.

Thank You Abdul

Went the extra mile

Many thanks to Abdul who was working as a security guard at South Terminal today He reunited an unsuspecting passenger with the purse they didn’t know they had dropped- he went out of his way to contact them, using, his initiative and ensured that their holiday wasn’t ruined.

Extremely Rude and Unprofessional Staff

I don’t normally write reviews, but I had an extremely rude and unprofessional staff encounter

I had a terrible experience with British Airways/ Gatwick airport staff on Monday, January 28th, around 3 PM at desk 252 while assisting someone who was checking in their bags. The individual I was helping struggled with English, and the Indian staff member attending us was not only unprofessional but outright rude.

She informed us that our luggage was overweight by 2 kg, which we promptly worked on adjusting. However, moments later, she allowed another passenger with luggage that was 4 kg overweight to proceed without any issue. When I politely questioned the inconsistency, she proceeded to rant, raising her voice and telling me not to question her work, claiming she was just following rules.

She went on to say the other passenger was “privileged” because they were seated in a different class. This explanation was both disrespectful and completely unprofessional. She caused an unnecessary scene, repeatedly told me not to judge her, and insisted I should “understand the situation.”

If this staff member dislikes her job so much, perhaps she should consider working elsewhere. Her behaviour was unacceptable, and I feel genuinely sorry for any other passengers who had to endure her attitude. British Airways/ Gatwick airport should seriously address this kind of treatment to maintain any sense of professionalism.

Luggage Verification Scam. Don't recommend this airport

Leaving a one star SOLELY because of the Boarding process. All the collaborators were great up until that point. Near-end they make you check your bag *again* for it's size measures, where they make you fit your bag through a metal cast which you have no warranty that it is actually the size the luggage is supposed to be. The collaborators are extremely rude and impulsive, and they will do ANYTHING to make you pay for the equivalent of a bigger bag if yours "doesn't fit" the metal cast. When I say they'll do anything to make you pay, I mean that the lady in front of me fit her bag in the cast THREE CONSECUTIVE TIMES and they were STILL telling her she had to pay for a bigger luggage ticket upgrade; only on the third time and after other passengers yelled at the receptionist did they let the lady through.
I my case, I didn't even have time. As soon as I placed my bag on top of the metal cast they IMMEDIATELY told me to get off and pay. My brother, who was accompanying me, grabbed my bag and managed to fit it through, and when he was nearly done putting it inside, they yelled at him to get off and pay saying that "it doesn't fit". Scammy and scummy is how I would describe the experience, and I'll do anything to not use any of this airport's services ever again. -55 Euros out of a scam.
