I ordered and paid for genuine HP 303XL Original cartridges from Cartridge People. Their website already allowed me to choose between original HP and cheaper alternatives, and I deliberately chose the genuine HP product.

After I placed my order, Cartridge People telephoned me and tried to persuade me to switch to a cheaper product in return for a refund of about £27.

During the recorded call, when I asked what stock they were talking about, the adviser described it as:

“our own brand… our HP ink cartridges.”

At no point did he clearly say: “These are not manufactured by HP; they are Cartridge People own-brand compatible cartridges.”

I was sufficiently confused by the call that I stopped the conversation and asked them to put everything in writing.

After I complained, their Customer Service Supervisor sent me the transcript and admitted that “there wasn’t sufficient opportunity during the call to make all the details entirely clear.”

That is exactly the problem.

If a customer has specifically ordered genuine HP cartridges, and the company then calls trying to persuade them to change to a cheaper own-brand product, it should be made absolutely clear that the alternative is not an HP-manufactured cartridge.

Consumers should also be aware that UK law prohibits misleading commercial practices. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 protects consumers against misleading information capable of affecting a purchasing decision.

I have now made a formal complaint and have told Cartridge People not to make any further sales or marketing calls to me. I am also keeping the call transcript and correspondence in case I refer the matter to Citizens Advice Consumer Service / Trading Standards.

I am posting this review to warn other customers to listen very carefully if they receive a telephone call after ordering genuine branded cartridges.

My original HP order is still being dispatched, but I am extremely unhappy with the sales practice used after I had already made and paid for my choice.

Update: Roxy, the Sales Manager, has now claimed there was “no specific offer”, despite their own transcript showing I was told I could get £27 refunded if I switched from the genuine HP cartridges I had already paid for.

She also said I “disconnected the line”, but the transcript shows I asked for the offer in writing, the adviser agreed, and the call ended normally.

Under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, traders must not use misleading commercial practices. I am keeping all emails and the transcript for Trading Standards.

Awful company that do not respond via email.

Great prices, compatible cartridges are a lot cheaper than the original ones, and work fine, they arrive quickly too, I have been using them on a regular basis for the last few months and will continue to use .

Prompt response by George. A few questions and then a new cartridge sent out.

the order was easy to place online, and was dispatched quickly. However it took 5 days to get to me due to issues with Evri the courier. When order eventually arrived, the packaging had been ripped open, a multipack cartridge set, taken from its box, and a desparate effort to reseal the packet made. Order arrived with packaging open at front door.
When contacting CP their agent Wiki, was very friendly, helpful, courteous and listened to my tale of woe. She immediately ordered a replacement for me, with notification arriving 5 minutes later. I offered to send photos, but Wiki said that they would contact Evri, to get things sorted. Great service, but I won't be returning if Evri remain the courier of choice

I had a few issues with my HP printer and your cartridges. I spoke to George in technical support and he helped me out immediately! Not only that, he sent me step by step instructions to sort my issue and within minutes, my printer was back up and running!

I raised an order on the weekend and then realised I had made a mistake. I submitted a contact form on the Sunday asking to cancel the order and then called on the Monday morning to ask the same question. I was informed that the order had already been cancelled and this was only a couple of minutes past 9 a.m. so I was hugely impressed. Special thanks to Emma for dealing with this so promptly and efficiently. I subsequently went on to place a larger order so it was a win-win all round. Highly recommend Cartridge People customer service and Emma in particular.

Aidan patiently advised re my printer order. When the dispatch company sent a totally different item, First, Hannah dealt quickly with the immediate fallout and Lindsay followed up on it. The correct item came in 24 hours. I was grateful for Cartridge People's friendly customer approach, professionalism and efficiency.

George was vey helpful regarding the issue I had with the cartridges. CP's response was prompt and resolved the issue bu re[placing the cartridges very promptly. All is now good.

I recently purchased some printer cartriges for 2 printers that came my way via friends. The price and turn around was superb. I had problems with one printer ( that was down to me not doing enough research ) George, was exemplary in discussing the problem and resolving same. Superb dealings from a great sales team, great prices, very rapid order fulfilment. Highly recommended

I had a problem with an unbranded HP cartridge. It was resolved very quickly by the Help desk. The lady on the Help desk, Hannah could not have been more polite and efficient.

I have been using Cartridge People for some time always great service. This time I had a problem as the package came damaged and cartridges missing. Can I thank Phil for sorting this out promptly and professionally with speedy replacement off items.

The cartridges I bought were their own brand and didn’t work. When I contacted the company they were prompt, polite and once the issue couldnt be resolved I was offered full refund. Thank you George!

I had a problem with ink cartridges Gordan was so helpful He had very good advice which fixed the problem.

My query over the non-delivery of a parcel was dealt with by Chris, and he proved very helpful, professional and friendly. The conversation gave me confidence that customer care is very important to Cartridge People.

Well packaged items arrived.. When questioned about one later arrival, Phil replied promptly and the item was delivered same day.

Ok so I've used this company before and they've always been great. This time I had a problem but their customer services guy, George, helped me get it sorted in no time. He saved the day and exercised great patience. Just the sort of customer service person you want when dealing with the IT illiterate!
