I am writing this review after not getting an ultimatum response from Bookaway…

I am writing this review after giving Bookaway multiple opportunities to provide a definitive resolution to a severe safety and logistical failure on a journey from Luang Prabang to Chiang Mai. They have since gone completely silent.
The systemic failures started before the trip even began. Bookaway only managed to confirm my ticket a mere two hours before departure, leaving me in limbo. When it was finally "confirmed," the actual experience was a bait-and-switch nightmare. Instead of a standard sleeper bus, they crammed me into a minivan.
From there, I had to endure a grueling 12-hour journey in an unsafely overloaded vehicle packed with people just to reach the customs border. The logistical breakdown didn't stop there— I was to take a local bus to Chiang Rai, and then transferring yet again onto another bus just to finally reach Chiang Mai.
When I contacted Bookaway about this complete failure of the service I paid for, their immediate response was to issue two fragmented, partial refunds (€23.80 and €34.90) as a band-aid fix. While they explicitly claimed they were looking into a proper resolution for the severe safety violations and massive disruptions experienced, they have now completely stopped replying to my emails.
Bookaway operates as a booking platform, but they cannot pocket booking fees and then absolve themselves of accountability when their local operators fail to meet basic human safety standards and strand passengers across multiple local bus connections. Stonewalling a customer after throwing a partial refund at a major safety issue is unacceptable.
If you value your safety, your time, and expect reliable customer support when things go wrong, book your regional travel elsewhere. This has caused me so much of stress and inconvenience.

Exceptional service

Exceptional service , the staff were very helpful and friendly. And the sleeper Bus was very comfortable and clean. Had breaks in between. I definitely had no issues at all. Had a free bottle of water even had a usb charging port that actually worked. Would recommend

Confirmation

Confirmation, vouchers and tickets included our tickets but also had tickets for a trip and person that we didn’t know. After my inquiries, I was assured our ferry tickets were correct and should not be a problem and that we had not been charged for that trip. I think and hope we ended up with what we requested, but was confusing and worrisome.

Repeated Cancellations, Misinformation, and Zero Accountability

I used Bookaway for several journeys, and unfortunately my experience was consistently negative and stressful.

One of my trips was cancelled three times. Despite this, the route continued to be sold and confirmed on your platform, which is extremely misleading.

Due to these cancellations, I missed an important connection. You refused to refund or offer an exchange for the missed journey, even though the situation was caused by your service.

Because you informed me that the new route would arrive at 1:00 AM, I paid for a hotel. In reality, the bus arrived at 9:00 AM. I was not refunded for the unnecessary hotel expense, despite the incorrect information coming directly from your team.

I contacted customer service multiple times to confirm the arrival time, and each time I was told it was 1:00 AM. However, the transport provider clearly stated it was a 12-hour journey. Verifying this information should not have been difficult to check, especially after repeated inquiries.

On another route, I was told to contact the provider myself. They never responded, and at the ticket office I was refused boarding. I was forced to pay for the same journey again just to be allowed onto the bus. Once again, I received no meaningful support and had to resolve the situation on my own.

For my final journey, I was directed to a “ghost” station in an unsafe area. When I contacted support, I was repeatedly told this was the correct address, even though it was not. I eventually had to find the correct location myself, as your team continued to provide incorrect information instead of investigating the issue.

The departure time listed on your website was 12:15, while the actual departure was at 12:00, creating further confusion and risk of missing the trip.

In all of these situations, I reached out to your customer service for help, and each time I was given incorrect or unreliable information. While I understand that you rely on data from transport providers, it is your responsibility to verify that information—especially when a customer raises concerns multiple times. Failing to do so puts your customers in difficult and sometimes unsafe situations.

Your response to these repeated issues was to deny responsibility and offer discounts for future bookings. After these experiences, I have no interest in using your platform again, so that means I received zero compensation.

Overall, this was an extremely disappointing experience, marked by poor communication, lack of accountability, and inadequate customer support.

Terrible experience.

Terrible experience.
1) We booked two trips – one to Hanoi and one back – for the same day. The return trip was confirmed immediately, but the trip to Hanoi itself was only confirmed in the middle of the night, even though the trip itself was early the next morning. It was very stressful.
2) The trip to Hanoi went smoothly. The driver arrived on time, was quiet during the trip, and the minibus was new and clean. However, the return trip (with the same driver) was terrible!!!
Let's start with the fact that the departure time on the voucher was 6:30 PM, with the meeting point at the international port. We were strolling around the city peacefully when the driver suddenly informed me that we had to be at the meeting point by 5 PM (!!!). I asked why so early, to which he replied that some "group" of tourists was finishing the tour early, so we had to accommodate them (!) Are you kidding me??
We ended up dropping everything and arriving at the port early to avoid being late, but when I asked where they were at 5 PM (!), the driver sent me a photo of them still splashing in the waves!!! I asked how soon they'd be at the port, to which he replied 6:40 PM (!)!!! WTF??? I freaked out and said we'd go relax on the beach then, to which he replied ok. BUT!!! As soon as we reached the beach (a 15-20 minute walk), the driver texted me, "Come urgently, we've already arrived!" Whaaat??
3) Needless to say, this time the driver had an assistant, with whom they talked loudly the entire way, preventing us from sleeping? The bus was old and dirty, and they dropped us off at a completely different location than we'd agreed upon. And the return trip ended up being more expensive than the trip to Hanoi itself 🤡

While many bookings are confirmed instantly, some operators manually review reservations and may take 24 hours to approve them. In this case, the operator for your first-leg trip successfully confirmed your booking during the night, just a few hours after you made the reservation, ahead of your trip the following day.

For added peace of mind, we always recommend booking as far in advance as possible whenever you can, as this allows more time for operator confirmation and reduces last-minute uncertainty.

However, we're very sorry to hear about your experience on the return trip; this is certainly not the experience we aim to provide.

The driver deserves 10 stars but the car only 2. So the good review is only for the driver, he was on time, he was very comunicative, very polite and drove carrefully for the entire road. But the car was not what we expacted as a grouo of 4.

One problem

One problem. When I tried to change the ticket time, I had to cl8ck the date also. But when I clicked the date n changed the time. It showed one day before. But, but when the change was done, it showed the correct date. Something not right.

The vehicle quality was bad

The vehicle quality was bad. The driver doesn’t speak English single word. In spite of complaining they send me same driver. Again the driver dropped us in a distance from the train station. It was difficult for us to come to station with luggage.
I would not recommend anyone to use this site and their service.
