Aviva have TOTALLY lost me as a customer
Aviva have TOTALLY lost me as a customer forever.
I took out insurance with them last year. I accidentally didnt opt out of the automatic renewal. Ok, no worries. I've been driving 24 years. EVERY TIME this has happened in the past with various insurance companies I have received a letter or email prior to renewal to say 'your automatic renewal price will be...', thus giving me the option of accepting it or not.
If I didn't get that communication, it's always because I had remembered to opt out.
But this company don't contact you at all beforehand. Oh no. Why? Because then you'd have a choice whether or not to continue with the renewal, wouldn't you.
What Aviva do is send you an email at 12.01am on the day of renewal to say 'thanks for renewing'.
And guess what? If you want to cancel within the 14 days "cooling off" period, they charge you a £28 admin fee. Even though the whole thing is done automatically with AI.
So I've just paid £28 for 5 minutes of insurance (as I already shopped around for a new policy elsewhere in the morning).
Now you might be reading this thinking 'well why didn't you opt out of the automatic renewal?'
Because I didn't know about it. Its automatically turned on by Aviva when you take out the policy (it's not an option when filling out the application details). You have to realise this and go and search for it on your online account. This literally happens to most drivers every year. And again EVERY previous time I've forgotten to opt out for it in 24 years, I've been contacted before renewal.
So this company are very crafty and clearly have deliberately designed this communication to maximise their profits for this scenario.
How do you lose customers? Treat them with complete contempt. Shame on you Aviva. If I'd not have been charged the £28 I may have considered using you again. But this has left a very bitter taste in my mouth.
I reckon this bad review will have ended up costing you more than the £28 you've fleeced from me. I hope it does.
If you have an Aviva car insurance policy in place, go and unclick the renewal on your account. Otherwise you'll get conned out of £30 next year too.
And someone answer me this... how is it a 14 day cooling off period by law if these companies can still charge an admin fee to cancel?! Especially when it's all done by AI now anyway?! Absolutely ridiculous.
Automatically opting in for renewals secretly by the insurance company should be illegal.
