The warnings are true!
I have always fed my pets JWB as a trusted brand with great results in both my cats and dogs. However my collie who has had it since a puppy has now reacted very badly to the change in recipe, having terrible diarrhoea for days. I didn’t want to believe the online ‘scare mongers’ but unfortunately all the recent warnings and criticism now appears true in my usually young, fit and non temperamental collie.
Will NOT be using it again. VERY disappointed.

My mum's dog had horrendous itching
My mum's dog had horrendous itching, leading to severe skin conditions and bald patches as a result of this ingredient change. Vet bills came to over £500. All cleared up once they changed the dog food. Do Not Buy.

Absolutely disgusting customer…
Absolutely disgusting customer servise!!!
Horrific customer care, or better said non existent! I have had an issue over 4 weeks ago now with an order I placed, went thought as I’ve got the email confirmation but never shipped or arrived here. Had to reach out to them and from the very beginning there were issues as their lines are an actual joke?!? Nobody ever answers for days on!!!! Left voicemails and sent emails! No response what so ever! I had the unfortunate time to speak with Iris and Frenklin via their online chat where I’ve asked repeatedly to get a call back and I was completely ignored and I was tossed around and pushed aways with generic responses for days in a row by the above two agents. Then I spoke with another agent named Kevin who did his absolute best, issued a refund for my missed order and a discount code for the frustration caused. Refund arrived quite fast only for the money TO BE TAKEN BACK!!!!!!!!!!! with no email, no warning NO COMMUNICATION!!!! I then emailed them again that was on 8/06/25 and guess what no response! A few days after that the bag of dog food that we ordered initially popped in our front door….. again without an email, no communication without me reordering it!
Please avoid this company as they clearly do not care about their customer not in the least!
Utterly shocked!
Update!
They have reached out to me, apologised and offered a refund which I received already.
Not sure if I will be going back to them yet but appreciate the kind apology.

Misleading and unnacceptable
We put our dog on their single source protein food as he has an intolerance to poultry. To bolster profits they have added poultry fat to their single source protein fish food.
This is false advertising and making our dog ill. Completely unacceptable! The front of the packet still states single source protein!

Recipe and brand ruined unfortunately
I've been feeding my kitty James Wellbeloved for over 9 years, and he's always been so happy with it, no issues at all. The look and smell of the food used to be amazing: light in colour, with a slight sheen of oil and a lovely aroma (even to me).
Now it looks dull, dry, and has unpleasant smell. I'm currently trying to stock up on older batches from Amazon just to make a gradual transition to something new. It's such a shame.
Cats like mine have extremely sensitive stomachs, and it took me ages to find something that worked for him. It feels unfair to suddenly change a formula that so many pets rely on.

Not happy…
Having used this brand for the past 10+ years (grain free turkey and veg to be specific) one of my dogs became severely unwell on the new version of the food to the point medication was used
There was no indication that the kibble had changed in recipe or size in advance so now I’m left with 8 bags of food I can’t use for my own dogs
I wouldn’t of been so annoyed had it just been the shape of kibble that had changed (although with 2 large breeds the kibble is too small for mine now as the old version was ideal as they had to chew it)
I emailed over 2 weeks ago with no reply and quite frankly I’m done with this brand and have now found a better alternative

Their adult dry dog food (15kg lamb flavour) gave my husky BLOODY gastroenteritis even after doing a slow and steady switch from the old food. Avoid this junk like the plague!!!!

Do not understand the basics of good customer service!
I have used this brand for years for my pets. Until they tried to 'make things better'. The website update was a total failure - no message that it was happening - no indication that I had to do something different, just 'your issue'! The last straw was the failure to deliver a subscription. No comment, no message of 'your delivery will be late'. I had to go find out they were having shipment issues. When I challenged them - they told me they didn't "have time to send a message" - yet they had time to update my shipping date every day of the delay. I have gone elsewhere - this brand do not understand customer service!

poor service
My dog really likes the food, unfortunately my subscription orders keep getting cancelled or delayed and I can't rely on the service

Have Siamese cat as a new addition and came with an introduction card offering a free bag of dry food. They definitely got the request because il receiving emails bot one week later and no sample. Sent two emails for help, no answer. Tried their direct telephone number 10 times and never get through. Just asks me to leave a message. For a company of Mat’s status this is terrible service. How not to run a company.

Ingredients change without warning, sick dogs
I buy the big 15kg bags of JWB Lamb & Rice, usually some weeks ahead of needing them, as protection against supply problems. My dogs had been doing well on this food, but the most recent one I opened has caused vomiting and having diarrhoea. Looking at the packaging I see the text has changed from simply "lamb and rice" to "rich in lamb and rice", and the ingredients show a subtle but clearly disruptive change to the ingredients, with no warning on the front of the package advising of this change. The new ingredient is poultry fat. This product is being sold under false pretences; it claims a single protein source (lamb) then includes poultry. I now have over £100 of dog food that I can't risk feeding to my dogs. Not happy at all, and I won't be buying JWB in the future.

Ingredients change
Been a loyal JW customer for the last 5 years (Fish & Rice), but saw that the packaging had changed. Looking closer, JW have also changed the ingredients to include Poultry Fat. My Retriever is chicken intolerant and we spent lots of time in the vets when he was a puppy trying to understand the issue so for JW to add Poultry fat into the Fish & Rice recipe is appalling. You don't need to look far to see that lots of dogs have been negatively impacted by this change so we will be switching dog food ASAP. Terrible from JW.

Disappointed
Very disappointed with the latest purchase of James Wellbeloved turkey dry senior cat food. I have been feeding my 12 year old cat this for years and now he won’t touch the new bag that cost me £17.49 from Pets at Home, apparently not only has the packaging changed, the recipe has also. So goodbye to James Wellbeloved and now looking for new brand of cat food.
EDIT: Just to say after a couple of weeks persevering Seb is not eating James Wellbeloved again!
EDIT: Have now had to stop feeding Seb JWB even though he started eating JWB again, he is being constantly sick - sometimes three times a day, something in the new recipe obviously doesn’t agree with him. After trying various other brands have switched to Scrumbles gut health for senior cats, fingers crossed it will agree with Seb!

Bought our usual JW Salmon and Rice only to find a recipe change with the addition of poultry fat and non specific fish protein added to the new recipe. The result is one dog who is now itched herself a bald spot and one dog who I sick and has diarrhoea. £100 wasted. After many years on this dog food will have to find a replacement brand. JW are you going to refund me?

I am a regular buyer over 6yrs for my large Airedale, she has had runny pooh and turns her nose up at this hyperallergenic lamb. I was bit concerned as shape change with hole in it, but now read Reviews claiming the same problem! Alarmed to find change in menu, now seeking other brands, this is so disgraceful as my dogs stomach is sensitive, and unbelievable you could put loyal customers dogs through this!! Shame on you.

‘Was’ the preferred dry food for our dog, however after a farce of a recent subscription order which shows shipped, then when i contacted by chat was told it was out of stock and not shipped by which time I had run out and had to drive to buy more, I am still chasing the refund up nearly 2 weeks later via PayPal as customer service do not respond, will be looking at another brand after this issue after reading comments on ingredient change.

Been using James wellbeloved for years without issue and dog has always thrived. It seems they've changed the recipe and loads of dogs are getting sick from it. It's also down into the 50%s on AADF. I've just swapped to darf which is a similar price, yet has ratings in the 80%s. It seems it has become a cheap dog food, yet still at a premium price.

Extreme sickness
My 10month puppy has been sick every day for the past 2 weeks, in and out of the vets, spending over a £1000 to work out what was wrong. We finally had to change his food and the sickness has stopped! Thought we would check to see if anyone else has had an issue and it seems that due to a change in ingredients a ridiculous high amount of pets have been extremely poorly - can’t believe it! Poor pets, a horrible time for owners.

New Recipe - No Notification - Poor Service
Recipe change with no notification to customers or on packaging.
Bought a bag of James Wellbeloved lamb & rice. I thought the kibble shape was different but did not see any notification on the bag to indicate a change to recipe. My dog had a soft stool this evening which is very unlike her and upon research have found many other examples of people and their pets in the same boat.
Disappointing and angry! Extremely poor from James Wellbeloved - if changing the recipe, let us know so we can phase in the new good gently for our pets!
EDIT: RESPONSE FROM

We are sorry to hear about the experience you and your furry friend have had with our product and please rest assured that your feedback and experience will be documented for the interest of the Quality Team.
There have been some minor changes to the recipe your pet knows and loves.
The changes made are as listed below:
1. Lower white and brown rice content
2. Oats and Barley will be listed as 2nd and 3rd Grain
3. Kibble size has been simplified
4. Replacement of protein specific fats coating the kibble to poultry fat
These changes has been applied to all of the dry dog and cat food range.
Our aim is always to provide the best high-quality nutrition for pets whilst also providing best value for pet parents. As such, we adjust our recipes from time to time, always balancing a range of factors including, for example, taste and nutritional profile, ingredient quality and availability. We´ve put over 30 years of knowledge, love and care into every one of our delicious recipes and still exclude common allergens such as: Beef, Pork, Soya, Eggs, Dairy and Wheat.
Please rest assured that these recipe changes should not in advers effects as sickness, diarrhoea or an allergy or intolerance flare up.
When pets experience a sensitivity to a food source this is due to the protein present in the food, so even with the inclusion of poultry fat in our recipes instead of a protein specific fat it should not result in an adverse reaction as fats and oils do not contain any protein. However please notice that eventhough our recipes are designed to be hypoallergenic, our products can not be used as a substitute of prescription diet for pets with severe sensitivities or allergies. If you are concerned then we would advise to speak to your vet.
We hope your furry friend is doing well now and hope this helps!”
