Panama Hats Direct is a small business that still gives personal service. When I send an email to their customer support asking if I could speed up my shipping, I got a PERSONAL call from Casey (the owner) to let me know he had pulled my hats from the "slow" shipping to the fast shipping. He ensured that my hats made it here just in time for our cruise and they are significantly higher quality than I was even expecting. Great Value and very high quality hats!

Exceptional Hat and Service

I recently ordered a Panama hat from Panama Hats Direct ahead of an upcoming holiday, and the entire experience was outstanding.

First off, communication was superb. Casey was incredibly responsive and helpful throughout the process, ensuring the hat would arrive in time for my trip. It’s rare to find that level of care and responsiveness these days—Casey made the difference.

The hat itself is beautiful—clearly crafted with care and attention to detail by his team.

The weave for mine is fine and consistent, the fit was perfect, and the overall quality exceeded expectations. It’s the kind of piece you immediately recognize as the real thing.

I was also impressed with the packaging, which was thoughtfully done to prevent any damage during shipping. The brim and crown arrived in perfect condition, thanks to the secure and well-padded box.

I went looking for a "real" straw hat for my small head and am very happy to have found Panama Hats Direct. The custom design feature on the website was easy to work with and the accompanying videos pointing out features of the different styles were helpful in making my choice. Casey's responses to my questions were quick and thorough. It was fun to receive order status updates with photos as my fino Havana hat was customized. It arrived well packaged and much quicker than I expected. The weave is beautiful and clearly high quality, a lovely hat!
It's good to be aware that the hat band may be hot glued to the hat to keep it tightly in place. Casey assures me that it's possible to remove multiple times without damaging the hat, but it means I won't be changing out bands regularly to match outfits like I initially thought. Guess I'll need to buy a 2nd hat....

Hat along for the ride. Barcelona, Rome and Sardinia. I love these hats, this is my second one I've owned but feel the hat band is no where as good as the hat. Hot glued together and then hot glued to the hat. (( It fell apart((

The item I ordered was a custom made hat.
I really liked how the information was updated after each step was completed. This gave the customer a sense of security and made the anticipation grow as they understood the process, which was an exciting moment.
Furthermore, they were very accommodating when I wanted to change the delivery address just before the shipment, which was very helpful.
There were times when I felt the response was slow during the several email exchanges, but I believe this was due to the time zone difference.
The product was of higher quality than I expected.
The carefully hand-woven hat body, leather sweat band, embroidered lining, and other features give it a very luxurious finish.
The box in which the product was packaged was also sturdy and designed to prevent the hat from losing its shape.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank owner Mr.Casey Dalzell's great job.

This has been one of the very best online purchases I've ever made. The order entry process was both comprehensive and intuitive. Communication was excellent from order confirmation through all steps of manufacturing and delivery. The finished product is a "work of art" and far too nice for an old bloke like me.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED

This is my second Panama hat from Panama Hats Direct. The first one was 10 years ago and was one of the inexpensive Cuenca models; inexpensive, but nice.

This time I ordered a Fino Fino quality Havana with a shorter 2.6"-2.9" brim. Casey and his staff were responsive to my questions and provided two in-progress photographs of the hat in it's final stages of weaving.

The Fino-Fino is tightly woven and very light, and comes with a leather sweat band and a liner; though, I might remove the liner ....

Although expensive at around $300, I think the hat is worth every penny. It is autumn in California now and I cannot wait for summer to arrive so I can wear it.

I did not receive notice that the hat shipped, and recommend PHD do so in the future. However, I received the hat in a well-constructed and sturdy cardboard box that had a crown-holder so the hat did not shuttle around during shipping.

I just might buy another one ......

The hat was beautiful

I hope that my experience is the exception that proves the rule. Panama Hats Direct provides some excellent quality hats and I respect what they do.

But my experience with the company has been poor.

To begin with, I began the design process and ordered a hat — a Plantation model that I really liked the look of online. I ordered it, inputted my size, and went on with it.

A day or two later I got a message checking the details I had inputted. The hat was all good UNTIL we got to size — it was a hat that was far too small for me. Thankfully the team and I communicated, and after a decent wait time, this was resolved. When my hat arrived, I appreciated its quality and design, but was disappointed that it made me look a bit too much “Wild Wild West”.

Credit due to the team, they were willing to take the hat back after some communication. But I didn’t want to do that, because I felt that I had made the mistake, and it wasn’t fair. So I ordered a second hat. This is where my mistake began.

Having an account with them, I assumed that all would be good, and I inputted my measurements again. This time I was aiming for a Havana model. Because of the issue I had had previously with sizing, I was ESPECIALLY careful to make sure I inputted the correct size.

You can imagine my surprise when I got a message again, checking the details for my hat, and again, it was the wrong size. I accept, it could’ve been a mistake or technical error on either side of us, but thankfully, it was resolved.

Here’s where the professionalism begins to slide — after everything was arranged, I received my second hat, and found it was far too small. Immediately I reached out to them — on September 27, 2024, I said:

“I believe that there has been a mistake. I just received the hat I ordered in August today, and it’s too small to fit my head.”

The response came back the next day on September 28, 2024:

“ I see the original order you asked for was sent to you in that size but their was also an email from you so i am trying to find out what happened but we will get this taken care of for you.

tomorrow i will sort this out.”

As of writing this review, there has been no further reply to me. On October 3 and 10, I reached out to them, asking for updates, and have heard nothing.

So, while I loved my first hat, I’m left wishing I returned it and got my money back. Instead, I’ve got a hat that I have limited occasion to wear (it’s very nice still), and a hat that’s far too small, that I’ll have to either give away or try and sell at a loss.

It’s a pity too, because I liked them, and I like what they stood for. If you choose to use them, do be careful.

For the sake of balance, if I do hear back from them, I will be happy to update my review, but it saddens me that they haven’t had a chance to work with me yet.

I am very impressed with the quality of the new hat. I selected an Optimo style and it is beautiful. The weave is great, the color is great, the hat band is handsome.

The Company kept me informed every step of the process. From the finish to the shipping, I always knew where the hat was.

When I need a new Panama, I will get it from here.
