Unbelievable but true

Unbelievable but true – December 2023
We need to share the story of our ‘Holiday from Hell’. Although booked by a well-known Australian travel company, the emergency agency, Haman Scandinavia played a major role, resulting in my mother’s injury.
A ‘trip of a lifetime’ for 3 Octogenarians became our worst travel experience. We never imagined things getting worse each day, or that Haman Scandinavia would add to the stress and trauma since returning home, but we live with the physical and emotional effects. Mother lives with pain.
CONTEXT: One week before leaving, we received an itinerary and 38 vouchers for transport, activities and accommodation. Apparently, Haman issues documents only 2-3 weeks before departure. At that point it’s too late to fix errors. We had to contact them while travelling.
The following are examples of issues faced – there were many.
TRANSPORT
Train vouchers showed reserved seats. Our carriages were also reserved for people with dogs or didn’t exist or had no reserved seats.
BUS ‘station’ in Tromso - more like a bus stop on the pier, blocks from our hotel. We had a street name and number to locate it.
Bus Driver from Rovaniemi to Inari, Finland never announced hotels; went 5km past ours. Had to arrange own transport back. Haman emergency assistance was unavailable.

ACTIVITIES
Dog Sled. On the day we received instructions to drive own dog team. For our safety, we couldn’t participate; wasted time and money.
AURORA DINNER CRUISE. On Christmas night, boat staff informed we should have had email from booking agency, to register attendance online. Nothing received.

ACCOMMODATION
CAMP TAMOK. Cabin was furthest from the main site, up a hill, no path or lights. On arrival, saw a bed on one level, 2 mattresses in a loft area with a ladder. Shower block was in main campsite. Toilet was several metres from cabin, amongst trees; no pathway.

TREE HOTEL– Birds Nest. Not informed it was 4-6 metres off the ground; via a metal ladder without handrails except near the top. We saw it was narrow and steep upon arrival very late at night. Exact entry was to climb through a hatch door, onto the floor, before we could stand up. No website photos prepared us for reality.
Descending the next morning for breakfast, mother slipped on ice, 3 steps from the bottom, onto her back, breaking her shoulder and wrist.

INARI- At check-in, told our cabin was in the row furthest from reception area, with no internet access. It was crucial, for email contact with Haman and to arrange early return home.

After giving formal feedback to the Australian agency, came Haman’s shock reply:
- no concerns were raised to us by Mrs. [XXX] beforehand. She contacted me several times before and during their travel. On December 14th, she emailed me asking if they could spend the night in the Bird’s Nest on the second day instead of the first to extend their experience.
- She also requested having breakfast delivered to the Bird’s Nest for a more enjoyable experience.
- Then she contacted me after her mother broke her arm. Her request was mostly to arrange transfers and complain about how her booking had been handled (she said she was disappointed about the Bird’s Nest

Arriving late, it was reasonable to expect more time in it, hence asking to swap the nights.

Haman’s comments are inaccurate- Emails show NO request was made to deliver breakfast
“With breakfast, while we're in the Birds Nest, is it brought to us, or do we go to a specific dining area of the resort?”

Our disappointment referred to our booking agents, not the Birds Nest. In fact, we praised hotel staff.

Transfers arranged after my mother’s injury, we believed were already included, but weren’t.

No information of long travel distances and rigour of the package was the foundation of a disastrous trip. It remains unclear how it was created for us - perhaps the high cost was more incentive for each booking agency, than our safety.

From our experience, if Haman Scandinavia is involved steer clear and keep all emails.
