Hub and I bought a voucher for my Mum…

Hub and I bought a voucher for my Mum and Stepdad. They had such a wonderful time, that it was a no brainer when Mum's 70th came up, this would be the most appropriate gift. We were offered bubbles for a small additional fee, so one would assume, that they had every intention of making their guests welcome.

What transpired, was far from the welcome my Mum received. It was heart wrenching when she called me in tears saying that after the worst journey there, they hadn't kept the room. Why? Because the hotel hadn't been paid by Country Hotel Breaks. We don't blame the hotel, especially when they tell us this wasn't the first time. They were good enough to offer a free glass of wine whilst they attempted to get back in touch with Country Hotel Breaks. The hotel didn't have Mum's contact details so couldn't tell her that the voucher wasn't valid.

I tried to call Country Hotel Breaks, and guess what? Answer machine. Mum eventually found an email and talked to someone called Mary. She was wonderful and I will always be grateful to her. It ended with us putting the room on another credit card , whilst Mary did everything to refund my card.

They sent an apology, no compensation and still insist on sending promotions, that they presumably can't afford. Whether the company has gone into liquidation or in trouble generally , I'll never know.

A great value offer

A good offer already but an extra 10% off too, gave us a great value stay in a Macdonald hotel that we would not ordinarily stay in due to high prices. However the offer, with free arrival drinks and evening meal, made the stay good value.

They cancelled our anniversary booking

CHB cancelled our reservation at a hotel for our first anniversary with less than a week's notice and with no reason. The hotel is still open and taking booking.
They have no customers service to respond to phone calls and emails, the only humans you can talk to are to make more bookings.
They failed to offer a refund for a wedding gift voucher that was worth £175 and only offered us inferior hotels or a refund for half the total price.

Truly disgusting service.

Easy to find somewhere to stay

Easy to find somewhere to stay in an area we were looking for, we had a gift voucher brought for us, so it was good to see what hotels allowed us to use the voucher.

Poor customer service and expensive Hotels

I would strongly recommend avoiding this company and booking directly with hotels instead.
We purchased a hotel voucher as a gift for two elderly people. One of them has mobility issues, so we specifically needed somewhere reasonably close to their home with suitable access to rooms.
After a lengthy search through the options provided, we found that nothing met their needs. The hotels were either far too far away or priced at over £200 per night, which made the voucher completely impractical to use.
When we contacted customer service to request a refund, we were initially refused. After further correspondence, we eventually found an email from one of their own employees stating that refunds would be subject to a 20% deduction. Only then did they offer a refund — but with 20% taken off.
The whole process has been frustrating and time-consuming, and the advice from customer service has been inconsistent and conflicting throughout.
Consumers should be aware that under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, companies must not impose fees on refunds where a consumer is legally entitled to one. We are currently looking further into this.
Overall, a very disappointing experience. Poor customer service, lack of flexibility, and a system that makes vouchers difficult to use in real situations.

Very frustrating booking experience

Very frustrating booking experience. Far too many hotels posting as unavailable, with entire months blocked out at times. Many occasions hotels shown as available then suddenly unavailable at the booking stage.

Do not use!!!!!

I received a voucher for Christmas and stayed at the Elephant hotel. This hotel made a travel lodge look luxurious. The room was situated over the kitchen and was extremely noisy. The shower didn't work among many other faults. There was also no reception to complain too. We left after 1 night and no meal. When contacting Country Hotels, the complaint took weeks and Country Hotels would not refund/ credit us for the parts of the voucher we had not used.

Simple but not flexible

Whilst it was simple to book one room, when I wanted to book a second room, there was only an option to book a second room that was the same. This was a problem as there was only one room in the price range and I wanted to book a different price range room.
As I wanted a single booking rather than two separate ones, I had to go for two more expensive rooms. I'm sure they will be lovely but more flexibility is needed.
