Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 53 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Travelers frequently report that regional trains are constantly delayed or cancelled without proper warning, leaving daily commuters stranded on dark platforms for extended periods. Consumers also strongly emphasize that standard ticket prices are extremely expensive considering the consistently poor quality and inefficient management of the entire railway network. Though some customers experienced severe disruptions, a few reviewers praised individual staff members for offering exceptionally kind and helpful assistance during difficult travel situations. Passengers additionally noted that unexpected schedule changes frequently ruin daily commutes and consistently cause missed professional appointments across the entire region.

2nd time they have cancelled a train i was meant to be travelling on recently.
Lost £33.50 by not being able to get to the gig I was going to in Cambridge.
Trainline message me with sit back, relax and wait for refund on my train ticket.
Oh that's made it all better now. NOT !!!

Avoid if you can!

Unfortunately, I had to give Great Northern one out of five stars so I can write this review, but in reality, I give Great Northern zero stars in return for a zero-star service.

The reason why I'm so angry about Great Northern, is due to the fact that Great Northern charge over £293 per month for a zones 1 to 5 travelcard.

However, the price of over £293 per month doesn't warrant the service of which Great Northern provide for their passengers, because delays after delays of which had taken me over an hour and a half to get home due to long standstills at Highbury & Islington, Drayton Park, and Finsbury Park. And those long delays had happened after I had finished working a very long-winded 12-hour night shift. And Prior to those long delays, I had missed my train at Moorgate, and this was due to the nearest barriers being on exit only. So therefore, I was made to struggle by using the stairs straight after working a very long-winded 12-hour night shift, also, 10-minutes later when the next train had arrived at platform 9, that train of which I had boarded had stunk of a very unpleasant smell, rubbish on the seats, sticky floors, and what should have been a 31-minutes journey home had turned out to be a journey that was over an hour and a half. But, that annoying repeated automated speaker will keep on saying, " it's only fair that we all pay the fare, " and if you see something doesn't look right? " We'll, let me tell you, what doesn't look right is the price of over £293 per month that your Great Northern trains charge in return for a terrible service.

Took almost 2 hours to get to Hafield…

Took almost 2 hours to get to Hafield via bus due to rail work. The bus journey normally takes about an hour but the driver kept driving in circles. On the way home myself and other passengers waited an 1 and 30mins in the cold for a bus going back towards London. A Very poor service provided to customers.

Not Great Northern Trainline…

Got to train early and got on the train coach, this was fine and a few minutes before departure announcement comes out that so many train coaches will not go from Cambridge to Ely which was the one we were on, went down the train and no seats at all and people sitting on the floor and standing. If train is full don't sell the tickets, useless.

Shockingly poor reliabiiity

Shockingly poor. Trains Cancelled about 1 time in 8, last minute without notice. Rest of time I’d say about 1 in 5 is over 20 minutes late. It’s a stressful lottery trying to commute to london.
The rolling stock is good enough if you actually get on a train and the prices would be reasonable if they provided an acceptable service.

I’m only giving them 2 stars because it could be even worse. Like network rail which is an abomination.

If I worked for great northern I would feel great shame.

Terrible Service!

I'm not happy with the service at Moorgate Station.

Because I work regular nights, I travel home from Moorgate on the Welwyn Garden City route in the morning after I have worked a night shift, and the barriers to the nearest escalators are on exit only.

So therefore, I had missed my train after I had to swipe through the furthest barriers and hurry down those many flights of stairs to the platform where my train was departing from, and of which had made me miss my train and wait for another.

It's not nice having to wait for another train after already working a twelve hour night shift.

Great Assistance at Hitchin and Horsham.

My elderly and partly blind mother was given wonderful care at Hitchin station yesterday (23 Jan 2024). My mum explained to the staff that she was feeling a little lightheaded so they took her bags and helped her to the lift. They escorted her to the train and settled her in her seat. They also radioed ahead to ensure assistance was organised at her destination. I am very grateful for the care given to my mother, thank you all at Hitchin and Horsham stations.

Definitely a contender for one of the…

Definitely a contender for one of the worst run TOC in the country. It’s like playing Russian roulette on a daily basis. Several times in the past month alone, particularly at Cambridge, the train is cancelled due to no driver. I could complain about the endless signal failures, engineering works, overhead cable issues but that is more the fault of network rail. The driver issue is within the control of GN however and appears to be one of the main reasons why they cannot run a reliable service. Constantly short of drivers however they are not advertising for new ones.

Waste of money!

Booked first class tickets to get home comfortably after a long international flight. Knew from previous experience that there is not a lot of difference between standard and first class (unlike friends of ours who are lucky enough to travel with a different company and have more comfortable seats, food service etc etc etc). However what are we actually paying extra for apart from the expectation of a seat? Carriage is packed and there is no difference to standard fares (there are even people standing!!!! Just a money making scam. Great Northern you should be ashamed.

Renationalise or I’m getting back in my car

I commute downham market to london, and my daughter takes the same train twice a day to get to Ely for school. The service is tragically terrible: delayed or cancelled so regularly due to reasons such as “no driver available” or “issue at the depot”. If I used such excuses for my job, I’d have been fired years ago. Only we can’t fire the trains operators, apparently we are stuck with them in the name of private enterprise bringing efficiencies and savings to us, the lucky users. I cannot believe we have let our public services come to this. For god sake, renationalise these assets and run them like the French or swiss: half the priced bullet proof reliability. I’m continually embarrassed to live in this country

Worse railway of the entire country

I’m constantly baffled with how expensive the train tickets are considering how awful their service is. You either make a service expensive but it works well, or you make it cheap because the quality sucks. Somehow great northern manages to be both terribly unreliable plus absurdly expensive. They will literally cancel a train 20 minutes before it comes and will make you wait sometimes over an hour for the next train. There’s been several occasions where I had to pay the nanny for over an extra 2 hours because of random, unplanned train cancellations. The most laughable part is that they will delay you for literal hours and then compensate your £16 ticket and refund you like £2 out of that.

Honestly, great northern train service is so disgustingly bad that if god would give me one wish, it would be for this service to burn down. Forget about becoming a millionaire or world peace, all I could ever wish for is that great northern railway service gets swallowed by the earth all the way to hell.

The cherry on top is that they also manage to hire the most unhelpful, rude staff you could possibly imagine, it’s like they were all raised by wolves and then someone taught them how to be a minion of capitalism. Sometimes I wonder if these people lack a soul, like cockroaches do.

If you’re planning to live in a place where you will be using great northern to commute to London, I beg you to reconsider, or learn how to drive a car instead, because this service will make you miserable.

Unreal how bad this service really is !

Unreal how bad this service really is. The delays are so regular that I get up at 0430 for a 0900 start that is 30 mile journey to London. Monday no trains running, so drove the 60 mile round trip that took 8 hours due to the A1 being closed after an accident. Friday 2 hours late for work as didn’t want to drive again and so it goes on almost daily now !
And Weeman Khan doesn’t want anyone in a car despite his fleet of Diesel Range Rovers that drive him everywhere! I have always wanted a tattoo so think I shall just get the word ‘MUG’ tattooed to my forehead and be done with it.

Great Northern Unreliable Scammers...

Shocking company. How they can get away with charging how much they do for a ticket, when 9 times out of 10 the train will be delayed or cancelled due to 'staff shortages'. How is that the public's fault? Then when a small mistake is made on where to sit on the train, they slap you with a £100 fine. So how did they get to that number? How has a ticket now gone from £18 to £100?! Even when you offer to just move as you werent given the option for a different seat, they decline this offer and just issue a fine because its easier. Right before christmas as well? Disgusting. Absolutely 100% a scam company that never runs on time. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

EDIT: After appealing the fine, an independent company have reviewed my claim and have come to the conclusion that Great Northen Rail had INCORRECTLY valued my fine. Therefore, the fine was dismissed. But if I hadn't had gone through the lengthy appeal process, then they would have happily taken £168 off me for nothing. Absolutely disgusting scam company.

GREAT NORTHERN RAIL ARE A SCAM COMPANY, DO NOT USE THEIR SERVICES.

What a friendly service we had this evening on the 21:42 from Moorgate to Stevenage. The driver delivered various announcements with useful info and a great degree of humour putting a smile on his passengers faces and we were all grinning at one another in amusement. Great chap making a y tiring journey home enjoyable 😂👍

Unless train service

Unless train service, always delays on the 15:53 from Welwyn Garden City. They clearly don't give a F*** and can't read a clock correctly. Then when they know they are late they drive even slower. I can bet money that they will be late every day, easy bet. You lot need to sort yourselfs out, charging what you do with the service you provide, taking the public for fools.
