Wonderful authentic Persian restaurant
Had a fantastic experience eating at Tandis last night (February 2026). I used to visit the restaurant when it was based in Belsize Park many years ago - and my parents even had their 50th wedding anniversary there - but I had not yet tried the food at the present location in Finchley Road: I was delighted to discover it was excellent!
I visited with my Persian friend and even though we showed up on a busy Saturday night without a booking, we were greeted with warmth and friendliness, offered a table for two, and made to feel very welcome. The staff were lovely throughout the whole evening: the service really was superb.
My companion and I ordered grills: for me the koobideh, for him the chenjeh, and both were excellent. The meat was tender and flavour-some, the chelo rice and grilled tomato perfectly cooked, and the side salads (ostensibly a garnish, but very generously sized) were delicious, as was the side of mast-o-mosir to accompany our dishes. All fresh tasting and freshly made and huge portions: very high quality. We had doogh, and later tea, to refresh us, and the staff were very attentive to our needs, ensuring my dietary needs (coeliac - need gluten free food) were met, and that we were happy and comfortable. The bill for all this just came to £50 including service, which I thought was very good value for money.
My Persian friend reaffirmed my enjoyment of our meal when he said that I should definitely add Tandis to my list of great Persian restaurants in London to frequent, because it was authentic and high quality. I plan on returning very soon and bringing my parents with me, and we hope to try many of the wonderful stews that the menu offers. (I wish I had taken photos of our dishes, but the food looked so good and I was so hungry, that I just got stuck in before I remembered!)
Absolutely recommend Tandis, a real Persian gem in north London, do pay them a visit.
