Now, these same publications—once freely shared—are being offered to subscribers for $11.99 a month. The company benefits from a legal loophole, the safe harbor provision, shielding them from liability despite the abundance of copyrighted material on their platform. This practice attracts subscribers by providing access to works at a fraction of their justified price, raising serious ethical and legal concerns about content ownership and fair compensation. No further request is being made here of Scribd, as we do not see the company as having any integrity and we would never do business with them in the future.

A GONG SHOW!!!

An ALL capitals…GONG SHOW!!!

I just went to this website for the first time. An out of print book is unavailable on the Internet Archive and Amazon wants an exorbitant price to buy a used copy.

You can’t get through one page without MULTIPLE X 10 second ad-waiting period. The minute you scroll to the next page, immediately an ad served up with another 10 second waiting period. The website is GLITCHY and the free preview offers a substandard experience.

ALL intended to induce a trial subscription. From the overwhelming MAJORITY OF 1-star reviews here, that option is WORSE!

One HUGE, GIGANTIC DOWNSIDE with ANY subscription, free or not…YOU WON’T RECEIVE EXPECTED VALUE!!!

And you can’t cancel a subscription! Add INJURY to insult, as they will perpetually charge one’s credit card, after they promise to cancel.

GOOD LUCK WITH THE CRAPPY & CUSTOMER-ABUSIVE BUSINESS MODEL.

However, we have removed the card information on file. I have canceled the subscription and deleted the account associated with this payment information; you should not see any additional charges from Scribd, Inc. moving forward.

Per our Refund Policy, I have gone ahead and refunded your most recent charge; I was also able to make a one-time exception, and have refunded the other charge on this account from March 2025 as well. You should see these funds credited back to your account within 3-5 business days, though this can occasionally take longer depending on your bank’s practices.

It has now been eleven days since your representative assured me in writing (on May 2, 2025) that I would receive a full refund for the unauthorized and fraudulent charges made by Scribd, Inc. on my bank account. You indicated that the funds would be returned within 3 to 5 business days. To date, no such refund has been received.

This unacceptable delay, added to the initial unlawful debit, confirms a troubling pattern of misconduct that appears to be embedded in Scribd’s operational practices. Your company has not only initiated charges without valid consent but is now delaying or outright avoiding restitution. This behavior constitutes systematic fraud, pure and simple.

As previously stated, I am determined to expose and legally challenge these unethical and likely criminal practices. I now formally put Scribd, Inc. on notice:

If I do not receive confirmation of the full refund within 72 hours,

I will initiate legal proceedings, including but not limited to:

Filing complaints with relevant consumer protection authorities (FTC, CFPB, and their international equivalents);

Seeking representation for a class action lawsuit with other affected users;

Publishing a detailed and well-documented exposé of Scribd’s fraudulent operations across multiple online and media platforms;

And ultimately, pushing for criminal liability of executives and responsible officers for wire fraud, deceptive trade practices, and financial misconduct.

Let this message serve as a final warning. You have an opportunity to resolve this matter quickly and amicably. Should you fail to act immediately, you will leave me with no choice but to escalate this into a full-scale legal confrontation, both civil and criminal.

And I have been posting it on X/tweeter, linkedin, all social media. I strongly encourage all deceived and manipulated consumers to unite and start a class action against these fraudsters.

Longtime user warning

We were loyal Scribd users for years and even found it to be a great value when it became Everand. But over time, the service has declined significantly.
We paid for an “unlimited” subscription, only to find that most of the books we had saved are now suddenly inaccessible unless we upgrade to another paid tier. It feels misleading and disappointing to have content quietly taken away behind a new paywall.
We also have Hoopla through our library, but with limited borrows per month, Everand used to be our go-to for audiobooks. Not anymore. It’s no longer affordable or transparent.
We’re actively looking for better alternatives—and I urge others to do the same.

I subscribed to Scribd thinking it was a flexible and user-friendly service. Unfortunately, canceling my subscription was anything but. Despite trying to cancel, they arbitrarily set the cancellation date for weeks later – meaning I’d still be charged even though I no longer wanted the service. To avoid more unwanted charges, I paused my subscription for 12 weeks, but I now have to set a reminder to cancel it manually later. This kind of design feels deceptive – clearly structured to make you forget and keep billing you.I’ve contacted customer service and hope they resolve it properly. But overall, the experience left a bad taste. A company shouldn't rely on customer forgetfulness to profit.

Should have known better

I joined today because I wanted to read a particular textbook. When I downloaded the book I found that it only contained the cover and contents pages and not the actual book. Therefore I cancelled immediately. Should have known better. I will update this review if they decide to charge me in a month's time.
