A great help!

Scholarcy has helped me immensely throughout my master’s degree. It made it so much easier to consolidate large chunks of information and quickly summarise key points. I also loved having everything organised in one place, which meant I could skim efficiently and find articles related to the right subject areas. From there, I could take a deeper dive into the research without wasting time. It’s been an invaluable tool for my studies.

Scholarcy has saved my time as a PhD…

Scholarcy has saved my time as a PhD student. I read less; my major time is now spent on locating and validating the literature, sorting it, and synthesising summaries in the matrices.

As a university student with dyslexia…

As a university student with dyslexia this software is really helpful in my studies. It allows me to easily understand the books and journals I have to read. It's great for other things as well. I highly recommend for those that find reading and processing any text hard. It would be a massive help.

A fantastic product for neurodiverse student

A dynamic company that constantly reflects on and reviews its product. Scholarly is an amazing tool for people who find dense, at times badly written, academic pieces and helps enormously to break the ice with these people for anybody and in particular, neurodiverse students with Dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD who can become textually overwhelmed very quickly. With its glossaries, summaries, and annotations, Scholarcy is a game changer in the way people study, and the way that it is configured will encourage people to read the piece by themselves once they had done it for the first time with Scholarcy. A must-have software for a better, more inclusive world of learning.

Outstanding service that left me feeling valued

I had some issues with uploading documents. I reached out to Scholarcy who quickly found a fix and implemented it - when I say quick, they done it in a day. As a part of the follow up with me, they even provided links to Scholarcy pages on the website that would help me improve my workflow. When I suggested some things I would like to see in Scholarcy (highlighting, note extraction via highlights, tagging documents to create a map of how the literature all relates), Oliver took me seriously and passed this on.

Thank you Scholarcy

Thank you Scholarcy! Coming across your site and using the tools within, have saved me days and a lot of stress in analysing research papers and compiling relevant ones for my study. I was on the clock with the deadline and this helped me get there. Having folders to keep these papers in one place and organise in themes or relevance was greatly beneficial for me, more so as someone who can get overwhelmed and lost in papers, books and notes everywhere. I had used the literature synthesis and export tool, one into a word document and one into excel to combine statistics, key words etc. This by far was incredibly valuable in putting the structure of my literature review together more thoroughly and concisely. I highly recommend and am grateful that I came across your site. I will certainly return when further studies come around. Thank you.

Fantastic program

Fantastic program, helped me immensely with my assignments for uni. I was recently diagnosed AuDHD just before starting my PDip and I wish so much I'd had access to this for my undergradute. I didn't even realise how much I was struggling with information processing until Scholarcy helped break it down. Also, had some trouble with the initial set-up and log in and activating my DSA access, but the support employee Oliver Back was incredibly helpful and patient and got it all sorted for me. Thanks so much!

From Inner City to Doctorate

Scholarcy played a pivotal role in helping me complete my doctorate degree. Its summarization and literature synthesis tools saved me countless hours and enabled me to digest complex academic material efficiently. Growing up in the inner city, I never imagined reaching this level of education. With tools like Scholarcy, I truly believe that every child—regardless of their background—can achieve their dreams.

Highly recommend

So simple and effective, saving hours and hours of time reading (plus brainpower). I love the exported summary.

Oliver Black has been really helpful too, to get it set up (the instructions I was given by a third party were wrong).

Once was a great tool…

Was a great tool but the newer interface has fully changed how it works and it basically doesn't work.
Originally: it used to have segments for each part of the article (ie abstract, methodology, findings, limitations) and highlighted the main points of these segments made skim reading easier. This allowed me to navigate the original text more quickly in clear chunks.
1) They changed the basic visuals to 'match your system' although it does so badly. So now the text is extremely large (one to two paragraphs fills the entire page now), which is very difficult for me to read.
2) Likewise, the background is now dark for me, which might be why there is no highlighting any more.
3) Text shown is ai generated, rather than the original text being clearly highlighted and separated. This *could* be a cool feature to see the same data rephrased in multiple ways. However, it does this when you tell it NOT to.
4) Generally, each segment is very short and uninformative. In the settings you can increase the character limit (originally at 400, I bumped up to 800) however, this doesn't help.
5) The ai generative text cuts off half way through sentences.
6) Generative AI isn't very good, so it on one occasion flat out hallucinated (aka lied) claiming that a meta-analysis of over 1,000 studies was conducted by my relatively small university. I'm not sure why the AI was fed my universities name, so I suspect it's reading data from my account and merging it with it's output which is concerning both for privacy and accuracy.
7) Lots of generative ai options for 'school student, under graduate, casual reader' however most of them only provide a summary (usually 1 or 2 incomplete sentences) and don't paraphrase the other segments of the article. This is not useful, especially at the expense of what we used to have, which seems to be gone!

Conclusion:
Now Scholarcy doesn't allow me to skim read through the original document or make notes. It re-writes the document badly, with incomplete sentences and inaccurate 'facts', in massive font I can't read properly. This is slower, less informative, requires me to use other tools to make notes, and is inaccessible.
It's lost absolutely everything that made it functional and I'm baffled how anyone can say otherwise. Unless my version is massively bugged, they removed all the useful aspects of it, and made it look like an ugly phone app.
Maybe it works great on a phone, but I use it on PC and I can't find a single thing it's doing well in its current state.

Reply from Scholarcy

Thanks for getting in touch, we’re sorry that you didn’t enjoy your experience with our service.

We’re sorry to hear that you have some issues with the generative summary, this should not have included your university name. It sounds like you were importing a paywalled article, without having full access to the document text. We’d really appreciate it if you could send us the original article to our support email (support@scholarcy.com) so that we can investigate this further.

We’re sorry to hear that you are not happy with the new user interface that we rolled out last summer. We conducted comprehensive usability testing to make sure that our existing users would still enjoy, and benefit more from the new version. One of the changes was how we implemented dark mode, which can be changed from settings menu.

We do include a summary of each section of the article, check out our ‘skim reader’ option under the enhanced summary to try this out. It sounds like you may have set your default summary type to another option, which goes into more detail than our skim reading selection.

Scholarcy does include the option to generative summaries to be presented for it’s users, but we do also offer extractive summaries for those looking for the original quotes. To access the extractive summaries, head to your settings and change the method from generative to extractive. You will need to reimport any articles you want the extractive summary for, but any future uploads will not use generative methods now.

Scholarcy users can adjust the length of the summary they receive by changing the value in the settings. This wont change any existing articles however, it will only be available for articles imported after the change. If you find the summary length to be too short, why not ask the dig deeper section to write you a longer summary of the particular sub-section you’re interested in.

It would be great to hear from you on our support email so that we can help you to get more out of the app, and answer any questions you may have about incorporating it into your existing study routine.
