Review summary

Based on reviews, created with AI

Most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers expressed dissatisfaction with the pricing, frequently encountering unexpected and inflated charges, particularly for insurance and refueling, which often significantly increased the initial rental cost. The service was widely criticized for being disorganized and slow, with long wait times and a lack of transparency regarding additional fees. Reviewers also found the staff to be unhelpful and sometimes unclear in their communication regarding services and charges. A recurring issue was with billing, as some customers reported discrepancies or charges for services they did not recall agreeing to, including cleaning fees for cars that were not excessively dirty. While a small group of people felt the pricing was cheap, the general sentiment was that the initial low prices were misleading, leading to a frustrating and costly experience.

Don't rent from that place

Don't rent from that place, all the reviews about it is correct, they charge you extra for no options what so ever, my reservation was for about $429 I endup paying $529
I'll be talking with Southwest to dump them from their options for package reservation.
I believe it a mexican mafia running the place. they also try to bully you into buying unnecessary coverage using fear of you insurance will not cover you.
Do not, repeat, do not rent fron this company in San Diego Airport.

Don’t make the same mistake I did, stay away from these crooks. Rent a car literally anywhere else and it will be cheaper than these cont artists in the end…..

I am mad as a hornet by the crap I have been put through by the dishonest den of thieves at Payless Car Rental. Overcharged 50% from my reservation rate email and that didn’t occur until well after 30 days from returning the car. Then after I complained to them about the bs charges, they decided to add another $1,100 in false damages charge to my credit card as retribution for complaining, but not until a full 44 days after returning the car and 2 weeks after challenged them about the rental overcharge. They refuse to provide photos of the non-existent damage, nor will they provide an invoice from a vendor to fix said mysterious late appearing damage without any evidence. Anyone who does this a thief. I had to file a dispute with my credit card company to get the overage reversed and then I had to file a fraud charge with my credit card company to get the subsequent fake damages charge removed. Oh and of course they added on roadside protection fees, which I explicitly declined. If this is how you have to make your stockholder dividends then you’re a bunch of losers.

I will stick with the major rental car…

I will stick with the major rental car companies. They charged me for gas even when I returned the rental car with a full tank of gas. And the car I wanted wasn’t actually available. And I never received my deposit back. For a one day car rental, my bill was that of a week long car rental. I would suggest to avoid this company at all cost!

We will never ever rental from Payless…

We will never ever rental from Payless again. Getting the car from Orlando was a horrendous ordeal. Unexeptable service. I payed in full at time of rental because I was supposed to save money. When we picked up the car there was a $250 deposit charge (we never pay a deposit with other car rental companies). Now all of a sudden they are keeping the deposit because it is a Concession recovery fee that they don't tell you about at first. Do your research before you rent a car.

One Star is Too Many

The process of picking up the rental was horrible. The service agent did not know what he was doing. Another service agent became angry with him when he tried to rent me a vehicle that had already been rented - she walked up to him and literally snatched the keys from his hand and scolded him for renting a car that was already rented. Then, he became extremely difficult with me, insisting that I initial the form without reading the sections that I was required to initial, insisting "Just initial the form, you are paying anyway." Further, the form printed extremely light (running out of ink?). And...the vehicle was not washed - was filthy inside, bug splatter all over the front and the windshield, and smelled of marijuana smoke. On the return, there was no one to accept the vehicle. I asked one male who was "working" but was told "everything is fine, just board the shuttle." Caveat Emptor!

Horrific experience with a 3-hour wait…

Horrific experience with a 3-hour wait for a car at the Denver Airport. The office was woefully understaffed and expressed no remorse for wasting hours of time for almost 100 customers. One Payless rep got into a shouting match with a customer and confiscated the customer's phone when he tried to take picture of the staff and the scene of chaos. Worst customer experience of my life. Hoping I don't get ripped off on the backend of the transaction.

I need to know if this has happened before me. Contact me

The employees don’t seem to be doing their job. I don’t understand why you have employees since I’m having to do their work for them.
Our flight landed in Denver, Colorado, at 11:45 PM on July 23.. We waited for the shuttle to pick us up for 30 minutes with a no-show. We finally decided to sneak on the Avis bus because I looked on the map to see how far it would be for us to walk because I knew that you were closing soon and I didn’t want to be stuck. I did notice that Avis and Payless were right next-door to the other. As we got off the bus at Payless the employee was leaving!!! He turned around and tried to help us. It was a good thinking on my part to take the Avis shuttle because we would’ve not of ended up with a car at all. We got there on Aug 23rd @11:45 and plenty of time before you closed at 12:30 but since the paperwork said that we rented it on the 24 at 12:15, you felt the need to charge me. When I dropped the car off on July 31, 2021 at 2:45 with a full tank of gas, AND the employees felt like they shouldn’t check it back in for 9 days later? It’s hard to believe with a rental car shortage they didn’t rent this car out for 9 days???And bill my credit card for $1300 dollars without notice? I was notified 3 different charges that your company wanted to bill me for. I never added them up but I bet these small charges equals the $1300 dollars that you billed my card for because the lady on the phone said I needed to provide my boarding pass for proof that I returned it on the date that I returned it on Who keeps their boarding pass for 10 days after the fact?? Absolutely a scam if this is the case. This is why I am writing my review. To let others know and find out if you have done it before me. We would have picked up the car on time on August the 23rd because your location knew of our flight number and the time we were landing so unfortunately when we did the paperwork, it said that we rented on August 24th at 12:13 am and not the time we made the reservation on. We returned the car on August the 31st at 2:45. 15 mins to spare. The total charge was supposed to be
$599.33 USD
and you billed my card for $1300 dollars without notifying me.

These are the notifications that I received. A chrge or hold for $732.39 on 7/17/2021 was placed on your credit card

A chrge or hold for $809.40 on 7/24/2021 was placed on your credit card

A chrge or hold for $553.77 on 8/3/2021 was placed on your credit card at PAYLESS-CORPORATE OFFI.

First of all they did not have the car…

First of all they did not have the car we reserved. They also did not give the military discount they promised. They charged us and extra fee, which they charged after returning car. They have not picked up our phone call to them to discuss. Do not use this car rental service.

I had a documented rate sheet printed…

I had a documented rate sheet printed out when I rented at the San Diego airport. They would not honor the printed confirmed rate. I ended up paying $120 dollars more. If I had had more time to find another car, I would have. The car had a slow leak in one tire. I needed to add air twice over the weekend.

Defective Car from Payless in Denver

I rented a car with Payless in Denver, CO.
Paying $656.95 I expected to get a nice beautifully car like everyone else. What do I get? I get a piece of crap car that should never have left the parking lot. And after complaining what does Payless offer me? They offer me a one day rental.

I prepaid for a vehicle to be picked up…

I prepaid for a vehicle to be picked up at the San Antonio Airport and when I got to the counter I was told that I had to pay 293.00 extra for an upgrade that I didn't ask for. I went round, and round with the agent and finally had to take the car and cut my loses. The car was filthy and a a small hole in the windshield. When I pointed this out to a worker his response was that it's no big deal, and there were no other vehicles left. I literally saw with my own eyes a whole role of rentals. When I got home I called, and tried to get the money I was charged for the upgrade that I didn't ask for, and I was credited 82.00. Then a week later I recieved a statement saying that I would be charged an amount if 450.00 for a cleaning charge. They did take the money from my account. Iam so upset with Payless. How are the able to get away with this.

Worst car rental experience I've had

Worst car rental experience I've had, and I rent a lot of cars. Flew to Jackson, MS and had a car reserved. Getting in the car I found a dorito on the floor in the back seat and a candy wrapper in the door pocket. The seat belt sensor on the passenger side did not work so the car would ding any time we were going down the road and someone was sitting in the front seat even though they had their seat belt on. Turned on the A/C and it smelled like smoke, so a previous drive had smoked in the vehicle. After I had something drop down alongside the front seat I found the cigarette lighter under the seat. Worst part was I filled up with fuel before returning the car and a month later I found an extra charge on my credit card for $78 from Payless. I called and they said I had not filled with fuel. I said I have a receipt and can show you. They said they'd refund me $69 as a one time courtesy. What about the extra $9? These guys are crooks. The only way I will rent from Payless again is if there is nothing else available.

Scam Car Rental Company

Similar to other reviews already posted, this car rental company is a complete scam that passes off repaired accident cars as luxury rental cars. Our encounter happened in Romania and we ended up walking away from the rental. Complained to Holiday Autos where we booked the car and all they said was “try to speak to the supplier.”
Scam car rental company and lost trust in Holiday Autos for 1) supporting this supplier and 2) not protecting their customers

Booked a hire car from these people and had to cancel the trip 24 hrs after booking
Be aware you will not get a refund from these robbing rental raspberry's even if it is covid related. Also be aware that you will end up paying double what you think because of there great insurance swindle. You will not find this out until you have paid for your hire charges. Be careful this is an expensive rip off. Use Euro car, much cheaper.

BEWARE

BEWARE! I never post reviews but needed to in order to save others from the horrible experience we just had at Payless at the San Jose airport in Cost Rica. I reserved our car through the Payless web site and was given a rental price of $267.00 USD. I have rented cars many times before (but not from this location) and this was a fair price. When I arrived at the car rental in San Jose to pick up the vehicle, Payless tells me that there is an ADDITIONAL $338.60 charge for their required insurance!! There was no option to NOT pay this! Apparently, they said that their Payless branch is a franchise so they need to charge all of their car rentals this additional fee. Our rental bill came to an incredible $605.60!!! Begrudgingly, we had no choice but to go ahead with this. To make matters worse, the car we received was a piece of crap. There were so many dents/scratches to the exterior that we had to video the car’s exterior because it was easier than taking photos of each mark. The interior seats were also ripped. The USB charger did not work and there was no cigarette lighter so there was no way to charge phones on our long drives (which we needed for directions). The car engine was extremely underpowered so the car could not perform like the four wheel vehicle we had rented. I am thankful my family made it through the Costa Rican roads safely. In addition, it ate through gas. BUT…the saga continues…when we returned the car we got lost and were late making it to our flight. We called Payless and the person we spoke to was very helpful. He said to save time, leave the car at the departure gate and they are sending someone to pick it up. He said they do this and it is “not a problem”. My husband did what the man said and waited with the car as long as he could for the Payless person to pick it up. We end up making our flight and when we returned home called Payless to make sure everything was ok. Come to find out they are now charging us an ADDITIONAL $679.98 because they said the car got a police ticket. I can’t see how this could happen since we left the car where they told us and it was there at most two-four minutes from the time my husband left it until Payless picked it up! It seems like a complete SCAM to us. We must not be the first Payless victims of this. AND, who ever heard of a $679.98 parking ticket?? YOU CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!! So beware…do NOT rent a car from Payless at the San Jose airport!!! Trust us! We are normal people like you and never imagined this would happen to us! I want to warn others so they don’t get scammed like we did. Shame on this company for ruining the Costa Rican tourism their country works SO HARD on and the Costa Rican people/economy depends on. Our $267.00 rental ended up costing us $1,285.58 and it was an unsafe car!!

Bad reviews were pretty true

I read reviews of Payless and went ahead with them because it really was the best deal! The airport pick up was easy, had to wait in a semi long line to pick up the car. The service at the counter was fine, especially since they were busy. The car was nice and clean. I dropped off the car at the end of my trip in what I thought was an easy drop off where you leave the car and then get on the easy shuttle on the way back to the airport. I looked for charges on my account for a week after I returned the car. I then got a USPS letter stated that they never got my car in return back. I tried to call, waited on hold for 45 mins. Was not able to reach anyone. My friend was able to reach someone while I was at work and they stated that they had received my car and that they would charge my card (a week later and when called). My card was then charged $100 over the amount that I was told that my car was going to be. No receipt, no explanation. I again waited on hold for 45 mins with no answer and never got a hold of anyone. They must call you if they think their car is missing and they must send you a receipt of charges. I never got any responses or help. I have 2 open tickets and am waiting to hear a response.

Aggressive upsell is actually just a flat out lie.

Reserved our car to pick up in San Diego and all seemed fine till I was told that Expedia shouldn't have promised me a Kia Soul or comparable as they don't offer Kia Souls. I said fine, just give me another subcompact SUV and he said that size would cost me more but he'd give me the local discount. He charged me 175 dollars to get a car which basically is smaller in trunk size and worse on gas mileage than a soul. He gave us a VW Tiquan. He said these are bigger than the Souls and so he had to upcharge me for a larger vehicle. Look at the dimensions online and you'll see I ended up paying more for gas and more for a smaller vehicle than Expedia originally priced me out for when I booked it. I've already contacted Expedia to try to get an adjustment but this place is a scam. He also told us to pay there for gas as it's 4.89 everywhere else in California but we saw it cheaper so we ended up paying more overall by paying Payless. That plus the gas mileage on the Tiguan is a lot less than what we expected on the Soul comparable car and we drove a lot in California! We will never use them again. Aggressive upselling is out and out lying. I spoke to the manager when I turned it in and he agreed to give me an 80 dollar credit but this still should have been a full return. Do not use them!

Payless overcharged me by $75

Payless overcharged me by $75. I opened a concern and they said 3-5 days to look into it. I said I would dispute the charge with AMEX and they threatened me saying if I did that the Payless would refuse to honor it.
Got a letter saying I didn't return rental vehicle, even though it was currently being rented out.
Customer service is rude and aloof along with outrageous hold time.
Long lines at the counter.
I rarely write reviews, but never again.
