Gives good insight as to the prospective tenants history, financialy, work and any social behavior.
As Landlords or agents, we've heard all the different stories, but to have it checked and in writing, it's gold!.

This company is a scam

This company is a scam. They ask for £10 just to talk to the landlord even before a viewing. Rubbish.

Thanks for leaving a review.

You can contact landlords directly on each listing page using the "Message Landlord or Request Viewing" button.

As an elderly customer

As an elderly customer, I can now see how this platform is geared towards the landlord, which up to a certain point is good & well, but when you are across the table sitting on the other side as a 'Customer' then it is not geared to work in your favour. As a matter of fact its about money.
Every message you do not know if your actually speaking with a 'real' person or a bot. It must be a bot as I found myself repeating myself unduly!
Yes we meet age requirements and tick every box that is available & appropriate.
You are unable to only ' enquire,' this system is not geared for any enquiry's what so ever. It's a case of heres the property (1 tiny photo) message - Holding deposit! Thats it.
It really does a dis-service to us older customers and as if it is not stressful & difficult as itcis to find a suitable home then this system in my estimation is wholly unsuitable for myself & my husband. So I deleted the account.
Also you should not be demanding a 'holding deposit' from Customers, as it gives a false impression that if you pay the deposit before viewing then the rental/property is yours! What about vetting & references. You simply cannot do this practice as it sounds dogy to me and one I want no part of!
Here is what Shelter has to say about your practice of taking 'Holding Deposits upfront,' even before viewing.

No, while it is not strictly illegal under the Tenant Fees Act 2019 in England for an agent to accept a holding deposit before a viewing if you willingly offer to secure a property sight-unseen, demanding one as a mandatory prerequisite or condition to even book a viewing is a massive red flag and a common rental scam.
You are scamming possible tennants! Plus landlords note I am 63 and my husband 78 we tick every box & have impeccable referances but we are exclusively choosy and this website & its nefarious practices we will not tolerate, hence deletion of account.
I also note a landlord asking you a similar question here too! Why take a 'holding deposit & mark the property as taken, yet you have not performed any due dilligance when it comes to affordability/reference checks etc. Its first person that shows their money is in!! This is a scam & totaaly unfair practice. You exclude genuine, decent tennants, in favour of those that pay first!! And I agree with the landlord who berated you on this practice!!
So, some landlord out there has lost a customer/ tennant who can tick boxes & validation to the moon & back. What I will say to tennants here, do notcpay a upfront deposit, holding fee as it is a scam and you do not get that deposit back, they hold it until you look at another property. Check your rights at Shelter.co.uk.
To landlords, this web-based company is really doing you a huge dis-service, which is allowing tennants to believe they are sucessful on a property due to taking from them a 'holding deposit' and not completing all due dilligence checks in the first instance. I also suspect they with-hold funds from tennants that should be passed onto the landlords forthwith. Today one of you landlords has just lost your potential ideal tennant! You can thank this company and its shady dealings for that!
Rather than furnish you a penny Openrent I would rather sleep in my car!!
AVOID YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

'You are likely dealing with a rental scam and should immediately stop.' communicating and refuse to send any money. Legitimate landlords and letting agents will never demand a holding deposit or any upfront payment before you have viewed the property.
Major Red FlagsPayment before viewing: Being asked for money to "secure" a room, flat, or a viewing slot.
High-pressure tactics: Scammers rush you, claiming high demand or that someone else is ready to pay right now.No official channel: Communication is restricted to chat apps or social media!! with no verifiable business email or landline.Refusal of paperwork: Refusing to provide a draft tenancy agreement, gas safety certificate, or proof of registration with a professional body.
What the Law Says (UK)Capped amount: Under the Tenant Fees Act 2019, a holding deposit cannot legally exceed the equivalent of one week's rent. When it's paid: It is only paid after you have viewed the property and formally applied to reserve it while referencing checks are conducted.

If you have already sent money, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to Action Fraud. For further guidance on your rights, check Citizens Advice.

NOTE: This appraisal is true & dependant upon my experience with your web page. I will not edit it if requested as it is a true factual statement.

Hi Angela,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

Tenants can enquire about a property by contacting the landlord directly using the 'Message Landlord or Request Viewing' button available on every listing page. We do advise that tenants view the property before placing a holding deposit and would like to reassure you that any holding deposits placed are treated in line with the Tenant Fees Act 2019.

If you have any further questions please do contact the team here: https://www.openrent.co.uk/faq#i-have-more-questions. We'll get back to you on the same working day.

Thank you again for your detailed feedback.

Best wishes, Leo and the OpenRent Team
