Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 1,501 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many people feel that the service provided is poor, with concerns raised about automated systems failing to understand account details or providing unhelpful responses. Reviewers frequently mentioned issues with account management, such as being asked for extensive verification or experiencing problems with transactions and payment methods. There is a consistent feeling of being disregarded by the institution when raising complaints or needing assistance. However, some customers had very positive interactions, noting firsthand experiences of kindness and professional treatment from particular branch staff. A small group of consumers also mentioned receiving speedy and empathetic help from specific personnel when facing difficult situations. Conversely, a few other people also felt that some staff members were rude, poorly trained, or made personal inquiries during service interactions.

BIG thank you to Cwmbran branch

I have been a member of Nationwide for over 40 years and always received the very best service at the Cwmbran branch. The staff are professional yet friendly, always efficient and supportive. I highly recommend Nationwide to everyone at any opportunity. Thank you to all for always making it a pleasure to deal with every aspect of my associated financial affairs. Brilliant.

Useful bank as they still have brick…

Useful bank as they still have brick and mortar buildings. And for some customers who receive the annual rewards bonus it's good news. Although I am not considered a valuable customer in spite of being a member since February 1971 and no longer having a mortgage and wrong savings accounts receive nothing.....

Paying in cheques outside of in a NW branch

I have been with Nationwide since circa 1990 and have never had a problem. However as NW has followed the big(ger) banks by closing branches i find one aspect frustrating - paying in cheques.
Admittedly a rare event i have to travel into a big town to find a NW branch which takes time and money. Why can't NW allow/arrange for customers to pay in cheques to Post Offices? my nearest one happens to be in a supermarket within walking distance

This has to be the best financial institution in the UK! I’d never consider banking elsewhere because I’ve tried the rest and now I have the best! Staff are so helpful and approachable in Nationwide, nothing is ever too much trouble and they really do go the extra mile to ensure a great service.

I can't recommend Nationwide highly…

I can't recommend Nationwide highly enough for the support I received throughout my mortgage application and home-buying journey.
A special mention has to go to Andrew B, who was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. As a first-time buyer, applying for a mortgage can feel incredibly daunting, but Andrew made the whole process feel much more straightforward. He was knowledgeable, patient and always willing to explain things clearly whenever I had questions.
The process wasn't always easy, but Andrew was there to guide me through it, keep me informed and reassure me whenever I needed it. His professionalism, communication and genuine willingness to help made a huge difference and gave me confidence throughnut the process.

After everything I went through to finally get my first home, I'm extremely grateful to Andrew B and the Nationwide team for helping make it possible.
A massive thank you to Andrew for all his hard work and support. He is a real credit to Nationwide, and I would happily recommend Nationwide to anyone looking for a mortgage, especially first-time buyers.

Enshittification

Nationwide used to be a great British institution, an alternative to the big corporate banks whose avarice blew up the world economy not so long ago and left all of us footing the bill: a building society that treated its members fairly and was accountable to them. Sadly this is no longer the case and Nationwide is a big bank in all but name.

It’s not the place here to recount the changes management have foisted on Naionwide in recent years, the abuse of its democratic processes or the scandal that has surrounded the eye-watering bonus payments made to multi-millionaire chief executive, Debbie Crosby.

Nor shall I describe the bureaucratic nightmare of being locked out of online access to my own accounts for months due to bizarre “money laundering” suspicions that were never substantiated or explained but quietly (and thankfully) dropped.

I only wish to relate my experience of its appalling standard of customer service and how this has declined since I joined.

Telephone customer service was once a free number you could call and get straight through to a staff member who would try to solve your problem. Now, after a tedious security process with an unreliable app, almost every call to the telephone line leaves me feeling frustrated, insulted and drained.

It’s as if staff are being trained to be unhelpful in order to deter you from phoning (so they can be laid off and their wages added to Crosby’s next bonus as “efficiency savings” perhaps?) Staff have no empathy or discretion and policies funnel you relentlessly back to Nationwide’s clunky digital services, which are often broken. Even if you specifically tell them (as I did today) that you already tried to do something online and it didn’t work you will be cajoled into rolling your boulder up that hill again.

If this is what the call centre is now, they should stop calling it “customer service” but “customer management”. It is like the person standing by the self-checkouts at Lidl who shouts at you when you scan something upside down.

And stop pretending to be different from any other soulless financial megacorp.
