Failed damp-proofing, a “guarantee” with no practical value, and being directed to liquidators instead of a fix

I almost never leave reviews, but I’m writing this because I genuinely don’t want anyone else to end up where I am.

In October 2022 I paid NRG 4U Ltd (trading at the time as Home Energy Save GB LTD)to deal with a serious damp problem in my 3-bedroom Victorian end terrace home. It was sold as a proper solution, backed by a 10-year guarantee. I paid because I wanted the damp gone and I wanted the reassurance that if anything went wrong, it would be put right without drama.

It wasn’t. The damp was not resolved and, more than two years later, I’m still living with it.

This hasn’t been a minor inconvenience. I have asthma and complex health issues, and persistent damp is a genuine health risk. Living with it day after day is draining, and the stress of trying to get meaningful aftercare has made an already difficult situation significantly worse. Your home is supposed to be somewhere you can breathe properly and feel safe. Mine hasn’t been.

When I went back for aftercare and remedial work, I expected a serious, practical plan: identify the actual cause, explain what was missed, and fix it properly. After an inspection in December 2024 I asked for exactly that. Instead, I got deflection and a narrow “minimum effort” approach. In writing, I was told essential related work “is not covered”, that they could only offer more injections, and that beyond that they were “unable to assist further”.

The line that says everything was this: “the company you paid for the initial work is not us.” I was then pointed towards the liquidators via a Notice of Deemed Consent not towards a proper remedy for my home. Whatever the internal arrangements are, as a customer the outcome is simple: the guarantee I paid for did not protect me in any practical sense when the work failed.

At the same time, I was steered towards paying again to address the ongoing damp, including a quote of £2,625 for tanking and plastering. In other words: pay a substantial amount more to correct the very problem the original work was meant to solve. That is not aftercare. That is shifting the burden onto the customer.

Financially and emotionally, this has taken a toll. I ended up having to escalate through Barclaycard over an extended period to recover some of my money. That process is stressful, time-consuming, and not something any customer should have to do simply to get a fair outcome when a service has failed especially when you are also dealing with an ongoing issue inside your home.

Before anyone pays a deposit, please do your research properly and check Companies House. These are public records:
• NRG 4U LTD (company number 12461126) is shown as being in liquidation, and Companies House shows its previous company name as HOME ENERGY SAVE LTD.
• HOME ENERGY SAVE GB LTD (company number 14911564) is shown as active, and Companies House shows its previous company name as PROPERTY REIGN LTD.

I’m not asking anyone to take my word for anything look it up yourself, and make sure the company name and number on your contract/invoice match who you think you’re hiring. Ask exactly who is responsible if the work fails. Ask whether the guarantee is independently backed and enforceable if a company stops trading. Get the scope of work in writing, including what “making good” and remedial work is and is not covered, because those details suddenly matter a lot once the money has changed hands.

Finally, I also dealt with a specific individual during this process whose manner was dismissive, confrontational and obstructive. I won’t name them here, but it made an already difficult situation considerably worse.

Two years on, I’m left with damp, health concerns, stress, and the burden of chasing redress through my card provider. That is not what anyone expects when they pay for a “solution” and a long guarantee.

Even giving one star feels generous. Please I honestly employ you to fact check this company and not be drawn in. I paid a lot of money and im still living with damp in 2025 with no support or aftercare despite an alleged “10 year guarantee” it's not worth the paper it's written on. If I can help one person not to use this company, I've recouped some of my money from them. BUYER BEWARE!!!

Survey satisfaction

Sam attended our property and carried out a thorough survey, explaining each step in detail, making sure we were fully informed of the current state of our insulation and associated problems, and the work that would be carried out, how it would be done, and the guarantees that come with it.
Sam was polite, friendly, very knowledgeable and did not put us under any pressure to purchase.

Problem fixed!!

Overall good experience, I had a persistent mould problem that I was battling with for several years in one room of my home. Found this company online who seem to offer something different to the rest, everyone I spoke to during the process was friendly and professional. I was expecting a survey that was estimated to take around an hour, my surveyor Sam was extremely personable, very knowledgeable, genuinely cared and was great to talk to but the overall visit did last around 4 hours. Assessment was of the full house, the products and services made a lot of sense to eliminate the problem for future as well as immediate. However the quotation I was given for the service to eliminate the problem with a 10 year warranty was way more expensive than my original expectation. As the need to eradicate the mould was urgent due to my daughter expecting I needed an instant, affordable solution. I did ask for an immediate eradication of mould for one room to which I was offered (Cirro-Pure clouding 12 month guarantee) although my understanding now is that this isn’t normal practice as they recommend the full house as a minimum order. Ray, who applied the treatment had a very calm nature and my two dogs Instantly warmed to him which is always a good sign for me (and rare as they usually bark at strangers) I also appreciated the level of care when it came to protecting my furniture and videos taken during the process gave me good piece of mind, as well as the room being sealed off afterwards to allow the health and safety risks to be completely diminished to the rest of my household.Sam the surveyor is a genuine, lovely person and went above and beyond with her customer service and caring nature as well as making the experience fun which let’s face it mould is anything but! After the initial treatment we noticed pretty instantly that the air quality felt clearer, the mould smell disappeared within two days and although the mould still shows through, it went from black to brown In a matter of days. Further to this sam very kindly followed up with a visit to wipe down dead mould and used a product to restore my walls to white once again, extremely happy with this!!

Sam is an amazing woman saved me that day from so much more than water damaged walls 😊 Happy with work carried out.

At the moment it is 5 however the work was completed a few weeks ago and the floor is still drying out. I needed work carried out because i had my water barrier fail and therefore water had risen in the walls of my daughter downstairs bedroom wreaking havoc on the walls and causing sweating under the laminate.

However when I enquired Sam was out very quickly. She was very lovely, professional and sensitive as i was very stressed and gave a worse case scenario quote which luckily once work started was pretty much halved once walls and flooring was removed to see the damage.
I appreciated the honesty of the builders and Sam as they could have completed the work that didn't need doing and charged me anyway but were honest about this. They were respectful and just generally lovely helpful people. The work was completed so quickly and I have never seen someone so good and quick at plastering. They were travelling from Wales each day too and I am in the Midlands. They were on time each day often arriving early and waiting in their van if they felt they were too early. I found this very considerate as often mornings can be chaotic so this was very much appreciated.

What I would say is that the manager wasn't aware some of the work hadn't been completed because it didn't need it. If I hadn't been paying attention I feel as though I could have been charged for work not done and wouldn't be aware as for me i have financed through a credit company. So definitely be aware of this. But this wasnt a issue at all once pointed out everything was ammended very promptly.

I do have to say that when discussing what work might be needed and what was going to be done at the beginning I must of misunderstood some things. Such as a foam being used on the outside of the walls all the way up the house (maybe i dreamt this). This wasnt something they do when i mentioned to the manager. But it was alot of information to take in and i was stressed too as not only had water coming through but had just had a bereavement in my family. Again Sam became a friend that day kept me calm and went over and beyond in each way she possibly could.
Altogether cost just under £8000 for specialised damp proofing water barrier treatment (sorry cant remember what they called it) all downstairs and having 2 walls knocked back to bricks and replastered. My first quote when we were unsure of what was needed was £24000, then reduced to 15000 due to being a carer so was very happy about this.

Did have to lose some skirting boards which will now need replacing but generally treatment was put in on the outside to avoid this as much as possible.

I am looking forward to being able to put a new carpet down in the room once the floors dried out. Just waiting for someone to double check that it is drying out correctly and that the issue has been completely resolved.

Thank you team for such a prompt response to my enquiry and just generally being so lovely. I can't wait to have my living room back and move my daughter back into her room.

Sharp practice or accident!

Was all going well, until the quote landed. We had agreed a 20% discount under their association with SAFFA and me being a veteran. This brought the quote down to the high side of the band I was looking at. However when the quote landed the discount had been added, hidden as VAT! Bringing the price back to the pre discounted price, well out of band. "the installation of insulation in homes is currently zero-rated for VAT in the UK, but only until March 31, 2027". Sharp practice or accident not taking the chance. As reducing a number by 20% the adding 20% doesn't equal the original number and the inclusion of VAT in the quote raised a red flag for me.

BE AWARE OF THIS COMPANY THE GUARANTEE IS NIL AND VOID

We had a chemical Damp Course injected in July 2024 with this business Home Energy Save Ltd. It went into liquidation (knowingly and in the process of setting up a new business at the time called Home Energy GB Ltd). They took my money £1600 and guaranteed the work for 25 years for a chemical damp proofing course. They were meant to come back after one year and check it had worked as they told us it takes 12 months to dry out but as they didnt contact us as promised by Steve, we called them yesterday and was dismayed to discover they went into liquidation in August 2024! Home Energy Save GB Ltd claim to have nothing to do with Home Energy Save Ltd but they have taken over all the Google reviews and others and the finance Manager with the old Complay is now a Director of Home Energy GB Ltd. Our guarantee is nil and void and they have washed their hands of it. I will be pursuing this through a legal route see communication below i received from Home Energy GB Ltd. PLEASE DON'T TRUST THIS COMPANY!!!!!! go with a local reputable business. These will take your money and there will be no comeback. I will be pursuing legal action, Watch Dog, Trading Standards etc. This is the email we received from Home Energy GB Ltd.

Dear Home Energy Save Ltd Customer,

I am writing to provide you with an update regarding Home Energy Save Ltd, which has unfortunately gone into liquidation in October 2024. However, it is important to note that the directors had already established a new company prior to the liquidation of Home Energy Save Ltd. This information is verifiable, and it appears that the directors were aware of the situation and took steps to set up the new company while Home Energy Save Ltd was still operating, including transferring assets from the old company to the new one, therefore rendering it nonviable and leading to its liquidation.

Excellent professional service

From the initial phone contact to the final resolution and feedback call communication was excellent. We booked a free damp survey and were very impressed with the prompt, thorough and diligent inspection of the whole property. Dean arrived at the agreed time and determinedly sought out the source of our damp problem. It wasn't easy or immediately obvious and it involved working in a couple of quite tight spaces, but he persisted until we were sure about what was causing the problem. Dean kept us informed and explained exactly what he was doing and the equipment he was using to support his findings. He gave us advice going forward to resolve the identified problem (it was a plumbing issue) and suggested possible treatments that would improve ventilation, air quality and future damp proofing and prevention. At no time did he push products or try to persuade us to buy or commit to anything. A young, polite and friendly but very professional representative of his firm. We would highly recommend Home Energy Save and will definitely be using them again in the future.

Steer Clear Please !

If i could give zero stars I would. From the start it’s been nothing but lies, false representation and avoidance. From day one the so called surveyor who is really a salesman informed me I would receive a 25 year insurance backed Guarantee. I needed this as i was selling my house and a contracted condition of sale was that the cellar must be dry. This cost was £12,500 for a 1x5 M2 cellar. I signed as I needed the sale. Work was done I told them I will pay when i receive the guarantee. The pressure I got to pay on the day was immense even promising me they’d have the guarantee by the end of the day. Needless to say months later no Insurance backed guarantee and no communication. I lost the buyer of the house as a result. I was then informed they can’t get Insurance backed guarantees for this type of work. So why their surveyor salesmen are going around promising it is to me fraudulent. I would advise anyone thinking of using this company to steer well clear, there is a history of issues then them winding up their companies and reinventing themselves. I wish i had done more research on these shysters before I paid a penny to them. I made a formal complaint as I am obliged to do prior to considering any legal action and since 24th September to date it hasn’t even been acknowledged let alone dealt with. And by the way guess what the cellar is still damp! I won’t have them back as they’re absolutely garbage.
