Outrageous charge
I am the leaseholder of Royal Arsenal Riverside. I forgot to pay the service fees to their management agent, Rendall and Rittner, on time and then I received the payment collection letter (Letter before Action or LBA) from Bretherton. Besides all the payment in arrears, there is a legal costs charged by Bretherton for GBP780. I did the research to know the range of issuing a LBA is in the range of GBP 50 to 400. If such letter is issued by a senior partner in a solicitor firm, it will be more than GBP400. However, this LBA was prepared and sent by a trainee paralegal and they charged me for GBP780. They put my account with Rendall & Rittner in breach even I immediately settled all the payment in arrears so that I couldn't help but paying the unreasonable legal costs. I saw there is another same complaint in Trustpilot and it makes me believe Bretherton is overcharging in every LBA case and I am not alone. I want people to take note of the way Bretherton is doing business and be careful of their outrageous charges for different legal cases.
Comment on Bretherton's response:
I am not their client but their client hired them to collect payment from me via an LBA. The point is not whether Bretherton specializes in conveyance or other lines of business. Even Bretherton is a firm of specialists, doesn't mean they can charge sky high by having a trainee paralegal, who is not a specialist, to prepare and send an LBA, which an AI tool can do. With such response, I think they should be re-gauged from one star to zero star.

On the advice of a friend (Retired solicitor) we used Emma Stewart at Brethertons and she was excellent, stating things clearly and concisely for our Wills and Powers of Attorney. Emma even speeded up the PoA so that we saved money before the Government's fees increased!
House move
It's been a long process to sell my parents house but I have had the support I needed from Brethertons, who have chased up queries when needed and kept me in the loop along the way. Thank you
Highly Recommended Conveyancing Solicitors
Leo Deane and his offsiders provided me with impeccable property conveyancing service when I purchased a house (Oct 2025 to Feb 2026). Unlike other law firms, they answered emails and phone calls extremely promptly, made sure I understood what was happening and when, and generally put me first. Wow, a customer-oriented law firm!
I rate Brethertons very highly and will continue to deal with them for legal matters.
Brilliant
Brilliant, genius, and swiftly concluded, given the archaic nature of UK law. Would definitely recommend and use again.
First class service, highly recommended
Emma Stewart prepared new wills and LPAs for us. She was very helpful, professional and calm when we created some problems during the processes! It was a first class service which we would strongly recommend to others.
Using the fixed priced divorce service…
Using the fixed priced divorce service . Although initially ok , the company are filling in forms incorrectly for us , when ours is a fairly simple financial split. They have put financial info in the wrong columns in the D81 even when provided with all our mediation figures. It’s been a long and protracted process with still no end in sight and are still procrastinating on completing the work . Disappointed in them
Disappointed overall
Disappointed overall. I took out a divorce package including pension sharing order.
When trying to clarify some final points I was met with a threat of £280 bill when I felt my needs had not been 100% met.
If only solicitors particularly this one spoke in English and clarified things clearly it would be a lot easier.
You are dealing with people with feelings at a very stressful time in their life’s. Your terminology is not clear some times. Why charge for everything when you have not met my needs.
Would not recommend this company when overall I felt let down and confused by it all.

Legal Ombudsman assessment and Brethertons
The Previous review which I have now removed reflected my personal experience with Brethertons and findings contained in the Legal Ombudsman's Case assessment from November 2025.
Brethertons has agreed with the case assessment that they made a currency error on my consent order and have not rectified the error and they were unreasonable.
I have now sent a letter to Brethertons to encourage negotiations towards compensation for my loss and I have removed the previous accurate personal account as an act of good will towards successful negotiations.
The review I have removed is based on personal experience of the cost, financial and emotional of the error which Bretherton's has now admitted responsibility for.
Husband & Wife Will's
Having decided that we should arrange our Will's we contacted Brethertons and were immediately impressed with the information and details we received. We were allocated Amber Morris as our solicitor and from our first meeting she was very polite, understanding and extremely professional. Throughout the process she explained everything to us and dealt with all of our queries promptly and clearly. Whilst the fees are not unsubstantial the service all round was excellent and we would not hesitate to recommend Brethertons and Amber.

At a very difficult time of Bereavement.
At a very difficult time of bereavement, I found the help and advice of Amber Morris at Brothertons was invaluable. She always explained everything thoroughly, and was swift to reassure when complicated issues surfaced.
I’d have no hesitation in seeking her out for future advice, and would also heartily recommend her to others.
I recommend Brethertons Solicitors for your Estate Administration
I recommend Brethertons Solicitors as this is the second time I have used them myself.
Always very professional and willing to go beyond their call of Duty.
They were ready to take on all family concerns and explain proceedings to both sides on administration.
Delt with the account with no judgement but listened and explained like professionals.
They even offered help in areas which they didn't cover themselves and referred me to companies related to the issues.
To Sarah Horton and her team, I say thank you
Updating our Wills
Hats off to Lindsay Gutteridge in understanding our wishes in what turned out to be a re-write of our old wills. She professionally guided us through some of the more intricate processes. Not at all intimidating or stuffy and we're happy to say we received an excellent, friendly service throughout. Thanks too, for the warm welcome from the lovely receptionists.
Brethertons made an Error on my Consent Order
The Legal Ombudsman has upheld my case assessment in November 2025 that Brethertons made an error on my consent order, did not rectify the error and were unreasonable. Brethertons have agreed with the case assessment and I have now written to their insurers to ask for compensation. Brethertons previous complaint process was traumatic, did not acknowledge their error, or rectifying the error and was unreasonable. This disappeared until the recent Legal Ombudsman assessment. I represented myself in court previously to ask for the error to be corrected under the 'slip rule' and relied on Brethertons to type and write my D11 and submit the application electronically which I paid a fee. Brethertons agreed with the LeO assessment that my ex husband was difficult and knew he was non compliant. I believed Brethertons were not asking fee's because they actually made the error and were rectifying this, despite my typical PTSD fawning and praise for them. The slip rule failed due to my ex husbands non compliance. Brethertons managed and oversaw my application to court twice and both applications failed to reach court. The first application I paid to submit electronically and was told at least twice that the payment had not returned to them therefore they expected the application was accepted. The payment was returned to me years later just before the LeO started investigating my case, late last year with no explanation. A cover note was written by Brethertons for the second application stating they were helping me and I asked Brethertons about payment for submitting the application and they said they did not need payment. They took no further payments and in their internal review I was not covered by 'duty of care'. This second application was sent to Liverpool instead of Bury St Edmunds this was the wrong address but when I called the court they said it was most likely binned as you cannot represent yourself and a Law Firm pay. This held up my case and was traumatic. The third application I submitted myself. In court I was shocked to hear that the 'slip rule' for a currency error could not rectify the error. I was so trusting in Brethertons, I had PTSD and was praising them and fawning, I totally relied on their support. They used this against me in their internal review and also suggested I see my Dr. They have all my documentation and asked for the court ruling, why would they ask for the court ruling document if they were not very interested and I believe complicit. The loss of the first two applications I outlined in my application to court so there is documentation about this.

Probate Work - Laura Stuart
Laura Stuart did a brilliant probate job from start to finish. Being a (retired) solicitor myself I know what it takes to keep a client happy. Laura was spot on all the way through this transaction and I would not hesitate to recommend her.
