Unknown fees
Had thanksgiving dinner. Was surprised by two added fees. A 21% tip and a $7.29 charge to use a credit card. When i questioned these fees with the manager, i was told all the restaurants are doing it. I responded that this is my first time seeing this and then he changed it to certain restaurants are doing it. When using absolutes such as all, never, everyone, you are usually wrong. He said the credit card charge is computer generated and he can't remove it. He said that if i did not pay it, my server would have to pay it. I said ok and that i would dispute it with the credit card company later. Initially, he said ok, and then soon afterwards, he offered a discount on the tab for the same amount. As for the tip, he said the staff was working hard and missing their dinners at home. What i did not tell him was that tipping is optional and that our server had provided poor service. He changed the tip to a percentage that i wanted to pay. I also asked him to show me where on the website, or on open table (the reservation website), these fees were mentioned as it may have been an oversite on my part. I would have paid them if i missed them. He did not show me the fees. In conclusion, i think the explanations were a bit shady/rationalizations, but i am satisfied with the outcome. If they want to charge fees, be up front with them. I hope we all challenge extra fees so they do not become the normal part of dining out.
