Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 637 reviews, most reviewers were somewhat happy with their experience overall. Many customers appreciate the friendly and professional staff, with several individuals being specifically mentioned for their excellent service and helpfulness. People often find the check-in process prompt and efficient, and some are satisfied with the quality and cleanliness of the vehicles. The shuttle service is also frequently praised for being quick and easy to locate, contributing to a smooth overall experience for some. However, a significant number of people express dissatisfaction with the pricing, often finding that the initial low rates advertised online increase substantially due to mandatory insurance and various hidden fees. Customers frequently report feeling pressured to purchase additional insurance even when they have their own coverage, leading to unexpected and much higher total costs. There are also complaints about rude or unprofessional staff, slow check-in processes, and difficulties with shuttle services, including long wait times and inconvenient off-site locations. Some reviewers also mention issues with vehicle condition, such as dirty interiors or mechanical problems, and a lack of transparency regarding terms and conditions.

When we got in line, there were 2 agents at the counter - apparently both needed a break. It was 10:45 pm. One ignored all customers and walked out. There were 4 customers to be helped. Luckily, King... See more

This is my first time using this service and I am very hopeful it all works out the way it’s supposed to. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t!

Routes would not allow me to use my car insurance to cover the cost of rental insurance. They require written documentation. Who carries their car insurance policy with them? Routes had a great low... See more

Ripped off by Routes

1. There was no sales person, only a glass kiosk. Every group that tried to get their car coming out was furious and cancelled with route.
2. They wadded on fees, wanted an insurance declaration from my insurance company, questioned my license.
3. We cancelled then had to find another car rental
Company. Routes changed us in full and we never received a car. 354$and change and no car!!!
Expedia threw up its hands and said they- ROUTES- won’t reimburse funds. We did not cancel in time.
5. Stealing is taking some one’s money
and not providing g service for that money!!!

I rented a car from Routes Car Rental

I rented the car thru Expedia. Everything was OK until I returned the car. Routes said they would send me a statement and everything was paid. The next day my Visa had a new bill for $500 and no explanation from Routes. A feel cheated and will fight this bill. I will never rent from them again and have written Expedia about the very bad business practices of Routes.

Run, don't walk, in the other direction

For context, I rented a car while on vacation in Puerto Rico. Because of a large flight delay, the rental handoff happened in the middle of the night in a typical PR rain. And, of course, I was very fatigued from travel.

The car I was assigned -- a 2024 Hyundai Elantra -- clearly was not maintained. In fact, it would not be a stretch to say that it had been abused.

The car had a filthy headliner, a major ding in the hood, a major scratch in the hood, damage to the corner of the front air dam (below the bumper), and a stain on the driver seat. Perhaps the biggest issue was the tire pressure. Three of the tires were greatly overinflated; they were at either 46 or 47 PSI. But the fourth tire was greatly underinflated at 26 PSI. I noticed this as I was driving on a toll highway in the middle of the night.

Since I was staying on the other side of the island, an easy exchange of vehicles was not an option. I lived with this vehicle for 11 days, and during that time I went to a local gas station four times to put air in the one tire that had an obvious leak.

Upon returning the vehicle, a Routes supervisor readily agreed to give me a 25 percent discount on my outrageous $903 fee. That did not happen. And I'm still holding my breath that they will not try to keep my $250 deposit.

Importantly, nobody walked around the vehicle with me when I rented it or when I returned it. I called twice during the rental to voice my concerns and put my concerns on the record, but both times I hung up the phone unsure if I was even communicating with the employee.

In the end, I felt that it was a terrible rental experience, which was not helped by a language barrier. Yes, the front counter guys did speak English, but most other employees did not.

Because of an airline weather-related delay, I was forced to rent from Routes. It was a desperate situation. My advice is to stay away from this company and rent from a more reputable national brand.
