Discriminatory Treatment of Expats by Scottish Equitable / Retiready

If you are an expat holding a pension with Scottish Equitable (Aegon/Retiready), be warned. I have been subjected to significant delays and discriminatory hurdles based solely on my residency.

The company justified excessive hurdles by claiming my country of residence, Cambodia, is a "scam" location. This isn't just poor service; it is discriminatory geographic profiling and a failure of the FCA Consumer Duty to act without bias. Now that the matter is with the Financial Ombudsman, the firm conveniently claims to have "lost" the call recordings where these discriminatory statements were made.

A company that can't maintain a basic audit trail of customer calls—yet claims to have "stringent" security—is not one that deserves your trust. I am pursuing this through the FOS for the maximum distress and inconvenience award.

UTTERLY UTTERLY UTTERLY UNFIT FOR…

UTTERLY UTTERLY UTTERLY UNFIT FOR PURPOSE.
Block you from accessing accounts with ridiculous changing password every 90 days shows they have no idea or care about customers.
Promise to pay because of the useless service and can't even do that.
Taking them to the insurance ombudsman, but moving all 5 Aegon pensions to somewhere that gives a damn.

Absolutely terrible

Absolutely terrible - Website always down and when it does work its clunky and basic at best.
Trying to switch funds is an absolute nightmare, YOu have to search for funds first and when you find the fund you want you need to enter the fund ref to select it, Most of the funds you search for are only avaliable to financial advisors but the search function gives you no option to distinguish which funds you can select to invest in and which are not available. Then when I finally get a selection of funds I want future investments to go in the website goes down for maintenance with no warning. It is constantly down for "planned" maintenance but there are never warnings it will be down which suggests to me its normally down due to unforeseen circumstances (IE the website is terrible and unstable) but they try and pretend this is not the case. I only use as my company pension is in here a however I really wish my company had stayed with standard life which had a much better website and app as well as they actually provided customer service. Stay clear if at all possible.

Unable to get money out

I wrote a review in May. Just to let everyone know it’s now August and still trying to extract my tax free cash due from my (luckily) small pension with this organisation. After waiting weeks to speak to an advisor (who spoke in incomprehensible pension speak) a password protected email sent out which I must access with my NI number. Great! Except obviously the password is definitely not my NI number. I also received an incomprehensible letter saying there were errors in my statements they sent out before but failing to actually explain what these errors were … and if you try to access the ‘website’ it’s down Absolutely shocking ‘service’ which is basically abusive to customers

Very poor functionality on the website…

Very poor functionality on the website and the app. Doesn’t show fund performance beyond a very basic 6 month snapshot. The goal planner is absolutely nonsense and doesn’t save any figures I put in e.g lump sum or increased monthly contributions so I can’t tell if my pension is on track or not. Overall a shocking service for this day and age. I only dread to think what actually trying to get my money out at retirement will be like. Avoid if you can.

I paid over £100000 into my works Aegon…

I paid over £100000 into my works Aegon pension, it is now worth less than £86,000.
This has happened to at least 3 of my colleagues who have had their pensions put into a retire ready fund.
I think this is not a coincidence.
Aegon need to answer for this.

Terrible

Terrible, terrible service. Awful performance. Bandits and pirates. Move your money. Do not use them. £30k fund made £163 in 6 months. Web app is awful. Comms are terrible and then try and transfer your money... best of luck. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Bad experience with Retiready

I have a small pension with Retiready. Since 2020 the pension I had accumulated has lost a significant amount of money. Most recent calculation is that I've lost £700 in the last six months. I have kept the money in the account in the hope that things will improve, but with a monthly charge and significant loss in the fund, I would be better storing the money under my bed!

Very bad performance

Very bad performance. Just as well I have checked the pension. Aegon has taken been taking £ 9.62 per month from my pension in admin fees. The performance of my pension has been £ 0.08 a month. this is not really a good deal. Check your pension with Aegon please !!

Clunky website, slow, high fees

Luckily I only have a tiny pension with this hapless organisation. Firstly their website is basic, cheap and clunky - making you click on US ‘sidewalks’ photos (several times) to verify you to gain any access. Once in there’s hardly any info or any statements to download anyway - they like to send everything by post and make you wait (despite bragging about their paperless credentials)
Waiting - their bot Charlie fails to connect you to anyone at all. After around ten failed attempts by Charlie to connect, around an hour later an agent who took around ten painful minutes to respond to every question with incredibly slow typing just reiterated the bad news - ‘we send all documents by post in batches’
Oh yes for this you will pay sky high charges - for what I am not sure because they offer virtually no advice (and good luck contacting anyone to get any!)
So your pension is just making money for the people who own this very poor service. Avoid

Difficult to contact via phone or website

Hard to rate them anything else when I've been trying to speak to them for two days, and the website login fails with a dead page. So worrying, so dystopian, so endlessly, sickeningly annoying. Edit: finally speaking to a person after many attempts.

Absolutely dreadful

Absolutely dreadful. No connection from the supposed 'Risk Level' displayed for a customer on the site and my actual investment plan - where the risk was impetentrable. Decided to move to a more transparent platform. Took so long - so many delaying tactics - that I had to cancel my decision amid market turmoil. I have now decided to go for an anuuity but they will not give me a timescale for that either. Obstructive gatekeepers of my funds for no good reason. Clunky website. Move if you can!

Terrible website, doesn't show one graph of performance. Simple request to move funds to different ETF takes days to process.

Bad experience with call centre

I called them to ask why the amount I received was different from the amount in my account when I closed it. I was told by someone called John that tax had been charged and I had to call HMRC. I said that couldn't be right as I never usually pay tax because of not using up my personal allowance. He insisted that it was right.
I called HMRC, it took 45 minutes to get through, then I was on the phone for 20 minutes and eventually they told me that tax had not been charged.
The retireready person just made it up.
They do have a proper complaint procedure so I am giving two stars rather than one.

Awful. Run for the hills away from them!

Awful.
Truly awful!

Had a workplace pension and was with my employer for over a decade.
When I left, my workplace pension turned into a retiready personal pension.

Years later, I go to add a dependent on my account.

I get told they don't have my name, only my first initial so I need to prove my identity getting a photo Id or birth certificate signed by a group of certain people, which costs not just money but a lot of time!

They knew for over a decade and only told me when I added a dependent!

NO ONES name is X or B or S, we all have names with multiple letters so why on earth did they not spot this earlier?!

And I am the one that has to fix it, even though it is THEIR mistake.

I can't even use a payslip to prove my name as THEY didn't transfer my full name from a workplace pension into a personal one.

Totally their fault yet I have to pay the price and time to sort this out!

Would not recommend Aegon or Retiready.
Run for the hills!
