Holding my money hostage
Tried to spend my money. You blocked it and told me to call the fraud department IMMEDIATELY. I called immediately and I have been on hold for 1hr7min so far with no end in sight.
I will be going to my local branch and closing my account as soon as possible. I will also leave negative reviews on every possible outlet.
You are holding my money hostage and you have the gall to put me on hold for over an hour?!? Are you kidding me? This disgusts me on so, so many levels, I can't begin to put in words how angry I am.
This is my money. How DARE you stop me from using it. It's under the guise of "fraud protection" but that's bs.
Edit: 2hrs now, still "we are assisting other customers, thank you for your patience.". What an absolute joke. I'd rather keep my money in my mattress than with this bank any longer.
This is really great thing for some…
This is really great thing for some company and business that they can get one star. I wish we had negative stars. God is my witness from the second day i moved to US, I opened an account with this company (suggested from a friend smh) i had issues till the day I completely close my account. Believe me or not, I got scammed (not by company employees) through this bank, cost me over 2k. And they as usual, WE ARE REALLY SORRY. now UNFORTUNATELY, my mortgage went under their company, I had no power over it to stop it. And its been one year nightmare. God knows how sad I am because over unprofessional and unresponsible this company, I might even lose the house. How many people have this feeling about this company? Karma watch everything. ✌️

⭐ 1 Star – Extremely Disappointing Experience with M&T Bank
This has been the worst bank I have ever dealt with. My experience with M&T Bank was stressful, unprofessional, and deeply concerning. Funds were mishandled, communication was poor, and several employees were rude and unhelpful.
What alarmed me most was their handling of homeowner’s insurance. Without proper notification or authorization, M&T Bank placed force-placed insurance on my mortgage in the amount of $67,000, despite the fact that I already had coverage in place when I recently closed on my loan. This caused my mortgage costs to increase significantly and unnecessarily.
Rather than working with me to resolve the issue promptly, the process felt aggressive and confusing, creating unnecessary pressure that could easily push homeowners toward foreclosure. I felt misled by representatives and was given inconsistent information throughout the process.
I am grateful that I was able to remove myself from M&T Bank, but I genuinely feel for anyone still dealing with them. Homeowners should be extremely cautious and monitor their accounts closely. Based on my experience, this bank needs serious oversight and accountability for how it treats its customers.
Worst bank
Worst bank. You can never get a hold of people. Bank is failing.

This compant acquiered my mortgage in 2021 but they are incompetent . This year they forgot to pay on time the insurance , I called them and they did late .Resultat Citizen refused the paiement and Have closed my insurance , on top of that M&T Bank asked me to pay 1500 USD for the period or the house was not covered ( because we need 30 days between 2 home owner insurance). They don t know also how to calculate the right sum of the escrow and when we call the customer service , each time you got a an different answer . Very bad experience
Just tried to open a checking online…
Just tried to open a checking online and recently received a email stating that my account was closed without a reason. Then I received another email from another person or source stating it was flagged for possible future fraud and that I had no way to fund the account. This seems kind of odd since I checked my Chex System report and found nothing there at all that would suggest anything close to that. This was kind of odd so I'm wondering if someone contacted them and made up a bunch of bs to get the account closed. The funny thing is it happened just before my debit card arrived in the mail. I'm wondering if it could've been a employee from a bank that I currently do business with. I just find the whole episode damn peculiar and offsetting to say the least. I received a response from the bank after I made a complaint on the CFPB website and I will copy and paste it here because the CFPB won't allow you post it there.Enjoy.

Charged an overdraft fee and a stop…
Charged an overdraft fee and a stop payment fee AFTER I had reported a fraudulent charge. If that isn’t disgustingly unethical banking I don’t know what is. And on Christmas Eve no less.
I had to open an Estate Account with…
I had to open an Estate Account with M&T Bank when my brother passed away. They were generally helpful but I needed extra deposit tickets. They gave me blank ones rather than filling in the account number for me and then charged me $12.95 to get 50 imprinted checks with the account number. Most banks do this on the spot at no charge.
Their customer service is terrible
Their customer service is terrible. After making my final payment on my installment loan I went to check online to make sure they received it. They took my account off of my homepage with no way of looking for that payment or any other payment history. I then called their office and the person on the phone asked for my social security number to look up my account. I do not give anyone my ss number over the phone. This is not customer service!
Poor Treatment of a Longstanding Customer
I have been a customer of M&T Bank since 2011, when it acquired Wilmington Trust. For the most part, I was generally satisfied with the bank and the service I received. Recently, I was sent a threatening letter, saying that if I did not call and verify my information that they would first freeze and then close my account. I understand KYC requirements, but sending this type of threating letter as a first notice is ridiculous. I called the number provided, verified my information with the representative I spoke with, and was assured that the issue was resolved. A month later, without any notice or explanation, the bank freezes my account and starts sending notices to creditors that payments will not be processed. This is not only embarrassing to me, but casts me in a negative light with my creditors. The first notice of this action was another letter. Nothing on the online website that I use regularly. No text alerts that I have signed up for. Just a letter saying they were returning a check I wrote. I called and spent an hour and twenty minutes trying to address the problem across multiple departments. They acknowledged that they were in the wrong and that I was told that I had correctly verified my information, yet still froze my account without warning. When I asked to speak with the supervisor of the department that handled this roughshod treatment of customers, the best they would do is give me an address for their customer advocacy department. No one deserves to be treated like this, especially a long-standing customer. I will be banking elsewhere from now on.
I have been a loyal customer of this…
I have been a loyal customer of this bank for years, and I am extremely disappointed with how they handled a recent situation. My son was unfortunately scammed into depositing a fraudulent check, and as soon as I found out, I immediately contacted the bank to report it. I acted in good faith, explained what happened, and asked for guidance.
Instead of supporting me as a long-time customer who was trying to do the right thing, the bank chose to close all of my accounts. This was very upsetting because I was the one who reported the fraud and sought help. I expected understanding and protection, not punishment for being honest.
I hope the bank reevaluates how they treat loyal customers who come forward with concerns. This experience left me feeling unsupported at a time when I needed assistance the most.
🚨 M&T Bank
🚨 M&T Bank — People need to hear this. 🚨
I’ve always had clean payment history, and I’ve always paid on time. Then during M&T Bank’s transition, my January payment was lost on THEIR end — not mine.
Instead of correcting their mistake, they marked me 30 days late.
At the same time, we had a serious emergency at home:
A bathroom leak that caused mold, and with small children, this became a health risk. I reached out under hardship, explained everything, and asked for help.
Here’s what happened instead:
• They ignored my clean payment history
• Hit me with a 30-day late caused by THEIR transition
• Offered almost no support while I was dealing with mold, repairs, and trying to keep my kids safe
Banks claim to care about families and communities — but when you’re actually in a crisis, they push you aside.
I will be filing a complaint with the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) because this is unfair, harmful, and not how a bank should treat customers who have done everything right.
If you bank with M&T, be aware of how they handle emergencies and their own errors.
M&T Bank, fix this. Families deserve better. @CFPB
Save yourself the aggravation and Do NOT use M&T Bank
Wait times are over an hour to speak with representatives! Sadly I’ve only had a few positive experiences with any contact over the years that was kind…95% are horribly rude! When you’re calling about your own money and get treated like a criminal every single time and spoken to like you’re bothering them! I’ve never seen so many mistakes made from a bank (when you’re dealing with others money I guess that is not important!)! My account had over 12 frauds over a few months time.. After I received text alerts and replied with; it was me trying to use my own money but it would be denied again for fraudulent behavior. Please save yourself any unneeded aggravations and DO NOT USE M&T Bank!
Different Zip Codes Get Diiferent CD Rates
I went to a branch in Farmington, CT to renew my 6 month CD. What I discovered is that the customer gets the CD rate correlated with his Account address no matter what branch you use to renew. Different Zip Codes means different CD rates. Other (Online) banks do not do this! Why does M & T. ?They didn't even honor the introductory rate poster on the website because they only use Zip Codes for CD rate setting.
Absolutely Happy and Satisfied
Absolutely HAPPY AND SATISFIED with the way my mortgage loan was handled by Marion Cantor.
everything went smoothly and seamlessly. With Marion Cantor you're in good hands
Thank you Marion and thank you M&T Bank
Worst Customer Service
Worst Customer Service, And Fraud Department In The World..If I could leave less then ! star I would...
This has to be the worst bank ever
This has to be the worst bank ever! Supper Old school, making a payment is a mission! No good!
I recently closed a mortgage with M&T…
I recently closed a mortgage with M&T bank. They got their routing number wrong on the paperwork. For the automatic withdrawal, which they require, had a different routing number that they could not explain. Everything is a mystery. They did two withdrawals for the same payment. They are unknowledgeable and arrogant. It's like dealing with middle school children.
Absolutely Disgraceful Banking Experience
I have never encountered a more inept and frustrating banking institution than M&T Bank Name. The customer service is an absolute travesty, marked by incompetence at every turn, and the interminable wait times are nothing short of outrageous. It rarely takes less than 20 minutes and just one agent. It's been over an hour and two agents and I'm still on hold. Local service branch is great, though.
Worst banking experience ever!
Been a member of this bank for over ten years and this is the second noteworthy issue I have had.
I deposited checks on a Monday and was promptly locked out of my online banking account from Tuesday thru Friday morning. And not only was I locked out, but a business that was already connected to my checking account for payments was locked out as well!
I went back and forth with customer service at 1-800-790-9130 and went back to a local branch (upon their instructions) with no help. Approximately 48 hours later I was just told over the phone that the "verification department" has not only put a hold on the deposited checks, but has also blocked me from accessing my online banking account for FIVE business days!
I then reached out to the M&T CFO, Daryl Bible, and another M&T executive using my LinkedIn Premium account with no response.
Friday morning I received a call from someone on the M&T investigation team who said the checks were finally approved and my funds were available. So I went to a local branch to get a cashier's check for only to be told the recently deposited funds would have to be in the account 10 days before I could get a cashier's check on the funds! I told the teller and supervisor about the call I received saying my funds were available, but they were not hearing it.
On my way out of the branch I sent a text to the investigator who called me earlier, complaining to him about my situation. He promptly called me back and demanded to talk to someone at the bank and after much back and forth between him and a teller, a supervisor, and the branch manager, I was finally able to get my funds!
A day later, one of the executives I reached out to on LinkedIn finally got back to me. A day late and a dollar short as the saying goes! And a week later, still not a peep from the CFO, Daryl Bible.
This was the absolute worst banking experience I have ever had, penalizing a long time customer for depositing some checks! I CAN understand putting a few day hold on some unusual checks until they clear the proper protocols, but to lock me as well as a business out of my online banking was over the top bad. It is no wonder M&T gets just 1.3 stars on this website.
Good riddance M&T!
