Very unique and interesting way to allow the layperson to invest in art work. Their fees are high - 1.5% annual and they keep 20% of the profits when the art sells. It is also difficult to find out... See more

Top notch and professional.

A great way to diversify your investments. Great selection combining well established painters like Basquiat with veterans like Warhol and up and coming “rising stars” as well. Realize there are significant fees — in the 12% range as well.

Make no mistake. Completely legitimate and aboveboard.

Glad to be on board

Erik was fabulous at the initial meeting and on several follow up calls. Patiently and clearly explained the investment. James made the onboarding process seamless. Glad to be on board

Worst customer service ever experienced

As much as I love the platform and appreciate how easy it is to use and how up to date everything is, the communication has been extremely disappointing. I have never experienced customer support this poor.

I have invested thousands of dollars in artwork on the platform, and recently I wanted to sell it. However, no one—and when I say no one, I truly mean absolutely no one—has been able to help me. I reached out through every email address and contact method I could find online, but I never received a single response.

It’s truly a shame to invest so much money and not receive any support or even a reply.

So far so good

So far so good. I'm new to the "art world" so ultimately time will tell but I've had nothing but positive so far with Masterworks.

I think this company is great

I think this company is great, because they afford me the opportunity to invest in a basket of alternatives. I'd love as well to accept some of the invitations to exciting private shows. Unfortunately, my wife is down on NYC presently.

Masterworks

Masterworks - The retched reach into the abyss of trusting others ….

I finally had some disposable cash and was wondering what to do with it. Not going to go into the sordid details of how I feel victim to their marketing trap, I’m just going to share the results because they speak for themselves.

Initially invested 20K and another 5K a few months later for a total of $25,000. Their pitch is straight forward, great returns in unique “blue-chip” art properties that beat the S&P. The truth is much uglier. Months after buying my fractional ownership Masterworks re-appraised my collection, and all five pieces were downgraded in value by over 20%.

This begs the questions, who was setting the valuation of the art before they started selling shares? Idiots? Monkeys? Greedy corporate suits hiding behind lawyers pretending to be art experts? Who really knows. However, maybe I am just the unfortunate investor with an outlier experience, so I decided to look online to see what others are saying and here I am, looking at a bunch of reviews that say nothing about profit or liquidity.

I’m going to chalk this one up as a learning experience, although an expensive one.

Takeaways:
- Research before you buy and don’t believe the hype
- Limit initial investment and understand the importance of liquidity
- If you want to make money with Masterworks, become an art appraiser
- If you want to buy art, support a struggling artist and hang it on the wall
