Terrible company-Avoid

Terrible company. Avoid like them and their parent company (Europcar) like the plague. Offered a sub standard lowest class car @ Fiumacino Airport, when I had ordered intermediate and told that that was all they had when Europcar next door had plenty of availability. Smug and unhelpfull staff!

More GoldCar rental rip off stories but now also watch out for Interrent who I assume are still owned by Europcar

I recently booked a car at Milano Malpensa airport through an on line website DoYouItaly that guarantees the lowest car rentals on the web and chose Goldcar despite all the bad reviews I had recently read about them because it said they had their rental desk at the airport instead of off site. I thought perhaps they were trying to change their image from the usual off site office that takes forever to arrive at and by the time you get your car you don't notice the ripoff charges they have added to your bill or the hidden scratches that have not been listed on your contract which they gleefully charge you excessively for because you haven't taken their ripoff excess insurance cover.

When I found the office I noticed it was the same desk as Interrent which is owned by Europcar so I was optimistic about my decision of choosing them as I have only had good experiences with Europcar and Interrent in the past. What a mistake to think so as when I got to the desk the assistant pointed out my driving licence expired 2 days before my booked return date. Admittedly this was an oversight on my side but I explained that renewing it in Italy was a simple procedure which I could do the next day and send them a copy. She refused to accept this and said my only option was to shorten my rental period by 2 days which was fine with me as I could have adjusted my trip to that. The catch however was that I had to rebook directly with them and the price was 400€ compared to the 75€ I had paid on line.

I replied that I was sure I could still modify my booking with DoYouItaly who I originally booked with as officially I had not picked up the car yet. While I was trying to do so she was working on her computer and my booking came up as not found on doyouitaly. When I told her I could not find my booking any longer she said it was because the pick up time had passed and the booking had been cancelled. It was just 5 minutes after my booked pick up time so it was obvious she had cancelled the booking as I was trying to modify it. I was outraged but all she said was next time to book through them directly and not through the booking agent, to get better service. I have used the DoYouItaly and DoYouSpain websites for almost 10 years now and have never been told this. I obviously refused to accept Goldcar's ripoff proposal of a new rental and took a taxi at great expense to get to my destination.

All I can assume is that GOLDCAR have obviously acquired Interrent and maybe even Europcar and not the other way round as I had hopefully thought as their bad service and attitude was definitely that of GOLDCAR and not of Europcar or Interrent.
