If you thoguht craftsmanship was dead

When we visited Fleming Howland they couldn't have been more helpful in showing us different styles of chair, different leather finishes, how things were made in the factory, etc. Enjoyable as well as informative.
The desk chair itself is beautiful, wonderfully well-made - if you thought craftsmanship was dead, then Fleming Howland will make you realise it isn't. I expect to enjoy the chair the rest of my life, and look forward to passing it on!!

Substandard product - such disappointing service

Posted on behalf of my father:
My wife and I purchased a full five piece suite from Fleming and Howland shortly after retirement to last throughout our retirement given their products are handmade and advertised as exceptional quality etc. Disappointingly only 18 months after delivery, we noticed a serious stain had appeared on one of the backrests of the high back chair - the accountability or lack of, from F&H is really disappointing.

We raised this straight away with F&H with the ‘warranty’ in mind due to what I would consider a major flaw in the leather, assuming that their team would go out of their way to assist and help to rectify the issue.

Instead I was met with the following vague and dismissive response: ‘I can confirm that this is not a fault with the leather, but rather a natural characteristic of genuine leather. As a porous, organic material, leather can gradually absorb natural oils, perspiration, or hair products in areas that come into regular contact with the head and neck. Over time, this may lead to slight darkening or changes in appearance. This is considered normal wear and tear and part of how real leather develops its character.’

Just to provide some context - I am the only one who sits in the chair and do not wear any aftershaves or hair gel and as such cannot understand that the stain has been caused by.

F&H suggested that I would either need to seek advice from a leather specialist as a more ‘cost effective solution’ or I could get the chair returned to have the leather replaced which would be at a cost to ourselves, despite the apparent warranty supplied. I’m appalled at the lack of responsibility or support being offered post-purchase in spite of their team failing to explain pre-purchase, that any of what they describe as ‘wear and tear’ being a possibility - we would not have purchased at all if we had known that simply sitting on the chair may cause staining!

I would avoid this company like the plague. Over £10k spent on a living room suite and this is the service you receive.

I have leather seats in my car and have had various leather suites over the years and never had this issue. Clearly my car has better quality leather than what has been supplied by this company.

After reviewing the photos and details provided, our team has confirmed that the mark on the headrest is not the result of a manufacturing defect, but a natural and well‑documented characteristic of full‑grain, semi‑aniline leather. As a natural material, it can, on rare occasions, react in this manner. This type of leather is selected for its authenticity, softness, and longevity, but it is also more responsive to contact with the skin and environment than coated or corrected leathers, such as those commonly used in automotive upholstery.

We understand your father’s point that he does not use hair products or aftershave, and we do not dispute that. Natural oils from the skin alone can, on occasion, gradually darken leather. This forms part of the patina and is considered normal ageing rather than a fault.

We are, however, sorry if our communication felt vague or dismissive, that was never our intention. Although there is no defect with the leather, our aim was to offer practical options: either seeking advice from a local leather specialist, which is often the most cost‑effective way to reduce the appearance, or returning the chair to us for a leather replacement, should your father prefer a more comprehensive resolution. We remain very willing to help explore either route.

Exceptional Furniture

Fleming and Howland makes exceptional furniture. The process to get it is a demonstration of faith. I can attest that we were nervous to make such a large purchase with such limited information but it was completely worth it in the end. Communication from F&H is great. They responded quickly to any questions and wanted to ease our concerns. It took about two months longer than anticipated and approximately eight months total to receive our furniture; it was completely worth the wait. The furniture is like nothing we could purchase locally. We have an older formal home and the chesterfield chairs and couch are perfect for our formal living area. Highly recommend Fleming and Howland.

Professionalism at Its Best

The team was highly professional, incredibly reactive, and always provided fast, clear answers to my questions. The whole buying process was seamless and completely stress-free, which I truly appreciated.

very disappointed with Fleming Howland …

very disappointed with Fleming Howland I ordered the Alfred Chair expecting it to be as per the picture on the website but when it arrived, although the quality is good apart from a small hole in the leather which was not obvious when the cushion was in place, the design was not right - the buttons were lower down on the back which changed the style and their excuse was that because the cushion is high it makes it look like its different so putting the blame on the customer saying it is as per their website which it clearly is not so after many emails with their excuses I give up - very disappointing !!

noted your response however the chair that I have received does not match the photograph on your website and no disrespect if you cannot see the difference then I am very sorry for you - there have been numerous emails Emily the content of which i do not agree but in my last email i did say i no longer wish to continue with the emails and I would leave a review - my review has not changed !!

JUST TO ADD THAT THEIR QUALITY IS EXCELLENT AND ALSO THEIR DELIVERY GUYS - ITS REALLY JUST THE DESIGN BUT I GUESS I WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT AND ALSO THE LITTLE HOLE SO PERHAPS IN FUTURE THEY WILL TAKE BETTER CARE AND WHERE IT IS INTENDED TO ALTER THE POSITION OF THE BUTTONS TO LET THE CUSTOMER KNOW..

The design of the Alfred Chair you received is correct and matches the product photography on our website. The simple black-and-white line illustration shown in the size selector is not intended to represent upholstery detail; it is a technical icon used solely for choosing dimensions.

Regarding the cushion height, all new chairs leave our workshop with fully plumped cushions which naturally settle with use. This was explained in writing along with comparison images. The position of the buttons has not changed.

You also mentioned a hole in the leather, but this was never reported to us before your review. As with any concern of that nature, we would need the opportunity to inspect it so that we can help appropriately.

Finally, we confirmed in writing that we would collect the chair in accordance with our returns policy and provide a refund should you wish to proceed.

We take great care to offer clear information and courteous support, and we regret that our efforts did not meet your expectations in this instance.

Delivery was a nightmare

The sofa and chair seem to be of very good quality, though it is a little early to tell how well they keep. Based on product quality alone, I'd rate Fleming Howland 4, or even 5.
Worth noting, the leather was of a better quality than I expected, even though I went for the cheaper option .

But delivery was a nightmare. It took four attempts, each of them cancelled last minute. This added over 3 months to the initial time estimate communicated by FH.

Communication by the delivery partner was outrightly bizarre. And the fact that one has to pay FH in full, for them to even dispatch the prices to their delivery partner is annoying.
Only positive thing I can say about delivery is the when the pieces finally did arrive the van driver was friendly and professional.

Furniture 4 to 5. Delivery 1. Makes an average of 3.

White glove delivery, with more flexible timing and coordination around personal schedules, is available for an additional surcharge.
