Disappointingly unauthentic

Visited the Cockermouth outlet. Ordered a couple of CLASSIC DOSA’s. Pancake consistency was almost classic, although a bit raw, but filling was definitely not authentic, and no accompaniments like sambar which is absolutely required for any authentic South Indian dosa. And melted cheese coating the inside of the folded dosa….. yuk!. This is at best a bastardised product obviously designed to appeal to what the purveyors believe are “British tastes”. Wise up- make it as it should be and you will get a lot more customers.

Hi… thank you for sharing this so honestly 🤎

I completely get where you’re coming from. I’m from Mysore myself, a place deeply rooted in authentic dosa culture, — grew up eating those — so I really understand what you mean and how it must have felt when it didn’t match that expectation.

What we’re doing at Dosa Chaska ethos are little different though. It’s not about recreating the exact traditional version, but is about bringing a mindful, health-focused approach to it. We put a lot of thought into ingredients, nutrition values, and making something that works for different dietary needs — while still keeping the joy of eating alive and enjoying Indian flavours.

Our approach includes sprouted lentils and wholesome variations like herbed whole mung and red lentil hummus-style fillings — each made to be rich in nutrients. So what you had was actually a more nourishing take compared to a classic dosa.

I know when you come with a certain idea of how a dosa should taste, something different can feel off. And honestly… those food memories are strong, it’s not easy to shift from that 😊

We do keep things quite flexible — vegan options, customisations — I’m sure this was explained by our team while you were placing your order.

If you ever feel like giving it another try, just let us know and we’ll happily make something closer to how you’d like it. We made customised to many customers, and that one is on us for you.

With sambar — we’ve taken a slightly different route. Our dosas are more filling-based, and everything you get — the sauces, chutneys, fillings — are all handmade, with a strong focus on nutritional value, and nothing processed is used. If you had the meal deal, you would have also experienced our peanut and coconut chutneys, along with a channa chaat-style salad that comes with it — it’s all designed to be a more wholesome for people, and balanced plate.

If you ever visit our Hub in Whitehaven, you’ll probably get a better feel of what we’re trying to do here — how we source, how we cook, and why.

Really appreciate your Honesty. Maybe give it another try sometime and hope to see you again. Thanks 🤎

Fast food - Super tasty & not ultra-processed

My family visited Dosa Chaska on Saturday, opening day, in Cockermouth, Cumbria. The food was out of this world. Fast food that’s not ultra-processed and is full of amazing ingredients and taste, and made with such care and love.
The team's knowledge about quality food and gut health was amazing. Equally inspiring are the company's values and their impact on social well-being and community. They truly are building something special.
I ate my food, then joined the curry club and booked a workshop so that I can pick up some of the blending tips, have some fun and continue to eat food that is amazing and healthy ☺️

Amazing Experience

An amazing experience at their community feast (Oota). Each part of the feast was full of flavour with food I have never tasted or experienced before. The dances, the sitar and cultural celebration was amazing to watch.

A wonderful experience.

A wonderful experience right in the heart of Whitehaven. The friendly Dosa Chaska team brought together members of the community to experience dance, music, dress and to taste many delicious examples of Indian food. We learned about Dosa Chaska’s commitment to sourcing local fresh vegetables and eco friendly materials and about their vision to encourage healthy eating, healthy living, well being and cultural learning at the new hub at Haig Pit. It was good to hear that in response to continued local demand for tasty Indian street food from the travelling food hut, Dosa Chaska will be opening a regular source of delicious Indian street food at the new premises in Cockermouth.
Thankyou to all involved.

Dosa Chaska Banana Leaf Feast

Attended the Dosa Social Dining event on Sunday last. Over 160 people dined at communal tables and enjoyed live Sitar and traditional dance. What a lovely experience..we were welcomed warmly, and enjoyed delicious and health giving foods served on a banana leaf by the Dosa Team who exuded warmth, graciousness and joy throughout. Their pleasure in creating this huge event was palpable and it engendered an atmosphere of joy and delight. At our long table, people who were strangers mingled, had lovely conversations, laughed and enjoyed the food. We left feeling replenished and restored. What an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Banana Leaf Feast - delicious food and a social, immersive experience

It was amazing experiencing different cultures and cuisine right here in Whitehaven. I am a pescatarian so it was nice knowing that everything that would be served to us would be vegetarian. Everyone I spoke to was lovely and helpful and the event was a blast. Definitely need to do another one soon! The dancing and live music really added to the immersive experience!

Disappointing “Community” event

We attended this event as a group, expecting a welcoming community celebration centred around food, music, and cultural exchange. Unfortunately, we all left feeling disappointed and uncomfortable.

The event was poorly organised from start to finish. Tickets were priced at £25 and presented as discounted from £35, which set expectations for a well run experience including food, live music, traditional Indian dance, and complimentary treats. On arrival, it was clear that some attendees had been given complimentary tickets. This created an immediate sense of imbalance at an event marketed as “community focused.”

After purchasing tickets, we were surprised to receive messages asking attendees to volunteer to serve food and assist with cleaning. This was not disclosed at the point of booking and felt inappropriate.

The venue was unsuitable, very cold, with acoustics so poor that it was difficult to hear speeches, videos or performances. Despite this, a significant portion of the event focused on appeals for donations and funding, particularly from local businesses, which overshadowed the celebratory intent.

One of the most concerning aspects was the behaviour of a member of the event team (white shirt & bindi). His manner throughout was sullen and confrontational, particularly towards our group. During speeches and dance performances, he held loud conversations at the back of the room, further disrupting proceedings. When serving food, his conduct was careless and dismissive, with food splattered onto banana leaves and, in some cases, onto people’s clothing. When asked what was being served, responses were abrupt and at times rude, including a remark suggesting that asking questions was not part of “this culture” which felt entirely at odds with the event’s stated aim of inclusivity.

The cultural performances felt under rehearsed and loosely organised, involving a mix of organisers, local participants, and teens without much cohesion. The sitar performance was genuinely enjoyable and was the clear highlight of the afternoon.

Photography took place throughout the event without this being clearly disclosed at the time of booking or afterward and attendees were not given the option to opt out. We would be disappointed if images of us were used for promotional or social media purposes without consent.

Food was served cold due to the awkward table layout and disorganised service. Attendees were not informed what dishes were being served, and desserts were placed directly onto savoury food, which was unappealing.

Finally, we feel it’s worth noting that recent reviews are not unprompted as suggested by Trustpilot. All attendees (160 people) have received a WhatsApp message after the event asking us to leave a review on this platform. While feedback is of course reasonable to request, the timing is uncomfortable, particularly in the context of the business’s current nomination for a local food award.

Overall, the event took nearly four hours of a Sunday afternoon and left us feeling misled and excluded. Rather than bringing the community together, the experience had the opposite effect. We hope future events are approached with greater transparency, care, and respect for attendees and funders.

Dear Mrs Sgg,

Thank you for your detailed feedback. We always listen to our guests, but we must admit we are genuinely surprised by this review, as it stands in stark contrast to the overwhelming flow of love, appreciation, and joy we received from the 160+ guests who made Sunday a historic success for West Cumbria.

We are proud of what we achieved—bringing the community together for health and wellbeing—and we feel it is important to correct a few factual inaccuracies for the record.

On The "Free Tickets" & Our Volunteers
It is incorrect to suggest there was an unfair "imbalance" of tickets. The individuals you saw working were not "free guests"; they are highly respected local professionals and community leaders who volunteered their time—purely out of love—to serve the community. They worked a full shift to ensure guests like yourself were served. Far from being "inappropriate," this spirit of Seva (selfless service) is the very heart of the community culture we are building.

On The Cultural Performance
We must firmly defend the integrity of our artists. The performance was not "loosely organized" or "under-rehearsed." Our lead dancer is an internationally recognized Classical Artist and ISTD teacher with a global performance career performed across various countries. The collaboration with live Sitar was an authentic, traditional showcase of high art, appreciated deeply by the dignitaries and guests present. We regret that this classical style did not resonate with your group, but we stand by its quality and authenticity.
On The "White Shirt" Incident
We are home to a culture of Atithi Devo Bhava ("The Guest is God"). The volunteer you mentioned is a distinguished professional and distinguished guest known for his community service from decades across England. While we are devastated to hear you felt he was rude—it is highly uncharacteristic of him and the feedback we received from others who praised him and the team's warmth.
On The "Fundraising" Aspect
We have been transparent from day one: The Indian Hub is a non-profit mission dedicated to community wellness. Sharing our vision was not a distraction; it was the purpose of the gathering. We are proud of our mission and the support we have received from local businesses and the Council.
On The Dining Experience
Serving a hot, multi-course feast on Banana Leaves to 160 people in a historic hall is a complex logistical feat. While we acknowledge there could be issues with temperature as —the feedback on the authentic flavor and the unique experience of dining together has been exceptional.
A Final Note
This event was a labor of love, executed during a time of deep personal grief for our family. While we strive for perfection, our primary goal was connection and authenticity. We and our lively west Cumbrian community are proud We are sorry that your group did not feel the same joy that filled the rest of the room.
We stand by our commitment to value. Please email us at hello@dosachaska.com with your booking details, and we will process a full refund for your group immediately.
We wish you the very best.

With sincerity and honesty,
Sachin & Shubha

A Unique and Memorable Indian Banana Leaf Dining Experience in West Cumbria

We had an excellent experience enjoying Indian banana leaf meals in West Cumbria. The food was absolutely gorgeous—full of flavour, beautifully presented, and thoughtfully prepared to cater for all special dietary requirements.

What made the day truly unique was the opportunity to watch traditional Indian dancing and listen to live Indian music while dining. It created a wonderful atmosphere and made the whole experience feel immersive and memorable.

We thoroughly enjoyed the day and would highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for something different and culturally enriching.

Dosa Chaska bananas festival

A first and very enjoyable banana festival to celebrate the opening of the Dosa Chaska Hub at the Haig industrial site, in the company of over 100 other participants who seemed to enjoy it as much as we did.Lots of different indian vegetarian food with many new and interesting tastes for us. Social dining on long tables side by side was not unique being similar to street parties but is still unusual and was good fun. Super effort by our hosts Sachin and Shubha with Indian dancing and musice to add to the experience - better use of the sound system would help another event as inexperienced presenters were difficult to hear at times but all told a great day - thanks and look forward to many more. Fantastic South Indian cultural experience

Great food, fantastic entertainment (sitar group and the dancers).
The snacks at the entrance weren't labelled so you were unsure if it was safe to eat if you had certain allergies (or you would simply avoid them).
Food servers were volunteers who tried very hard to ensure everybody was served even though it was a big group of diners and some people were initially missed. There was enough food and it was plentiful in quantity that you didn't feel the need for seconds and they catered for so many allergies it was impressive and ensured everyone felt included.
The 'pan station' at the end was a nice traditional touch too.
Overall it was an excellent experience and one I would happily attend again.
