Clayton Wood natural burial ground is set in 15 acres of countryside within the South Downs National Park. You can be part of a new English wood that will be protected from development. Situated below the Jack and Jill Windmills, our beautiful site has various dedicated areas for full natural burial and cremated remains, as well as memorial scattering lawns, surrounded by native trees for future generations to enjoy.

Beautiful location and upkeep. Staff pleasant and helpful.
Only reason we’ve awarded 4 stars is the very high cost of using the hall for any time over the free hour that is offered with the plot.

Clayton Wood is a beautiful setting for the final resting place of a loved one. The process of finding a suitable plot and the interment day went really smoothly. All the staff there were very helpful and understanding of our needs at a difficult time.

The whole experience at Clayton gave us a feeling of peace at an emotionally difficult time and we came away thinking we had done the right thing for a much loved husband, father and grandfather as we laid him to rest in sight of his beloved South Downs.

I didn’t like they were still digging the grave 45 mins before my dad was due. In fact finished as he arrived. They were not very polite about it and clearly didn’t understand why I was so upset to see the digger almost on top of mum either.,
Mum and dad pre purchased it. Not as good as they make it sound. No flowers allowed except wild flowers which they cut down. 😢

The staff has been extremely helpful in such a difficult time. We have had to have a burial in such a short timeline and everyone ensured that this happened. The process was seamless and they worked with the funeral home to ensure this. Everyone was kind, understanding and words cannot express how much we as a family appreciate this. The setting here is peaceful and our Mother is laid to rest near loved ones.

Both mum and dad are buried at Clayton Wood Natural Burial ground which they chose. We had a Christian service in church for each of them followed by the Committal at the Burial ground by the grave, dad in 2021 and mum in 2024. All went smoothly and well. We regularly visit to place flowers. Its a lovely Peaceful place.

The chapel overlooking the Downs and Clayton windmills is perfect for a moving farewell in a natural setting. Everybody made us feel welcome and cared for , very important when you lose a loved one.

With its beautiful location, Clayton Wood is a very appropriate space for laying to rest your loved ones. They operate as a natural burial site, so if you feel a closeness to nature (as hopefully most of us do), each burial will help bring life to the vegetation (notably tree planting) and allowing wildlife to thrive too. One of the rules of natural burial is usage of natural, biodegradable coffins only.
Because it is a natural space, the paths to the plots can get muddy especially in the winter. Wear appropriate footwear to the memorial service, or if you are visiting a grave, and if wheelchair bound please enquire about plots that are as accessible as possible as this can be tricky to navigate.
I do recommend the service hall, this is a peaceful contemporary space with a lot of light that can stream in and help towards a sympathetic reflective service.
The staff are good at advising those who are navigating such difficult, usually heartbreaking circumstances, and you feel treated with empathy and respect.
I would definitely advise those who have lost, to consider natural burial, it's a comfort to think your loved one is returning to nature, and helping grow future woodland.
