"Brokerage" Charge on Shipment from France
UPS informed me by e-mail out of blue this morning that the package due for delivery today required immediate payment of "import fees", which would have been embarrassing had I missed it. UPS assessed a "brokerage charge" of £11.50 to process a payment of VAT due of £49.37 -- as outrageous as the charge is, it's worse as UPS acting as my "broker" failed to note that VAT (duly documented as €46.13) had been included in the sales price in France and so the amount subject to UK VAT should have been correspondingly less, with VAT due of £41.14 (roughly equal to what I'll eventually recover from the vendor upon showing the VAT paid in the UK). I reckon that makes the actual "brokerage charge" a whopping £19.73, essentially the full shipping cost. Not a great experience for the Christmas shopping season.
