Avoid This Gym and This Brand at All Costs
I was a member of énergie Fitness Mullingar for over three years, and the decline in standards over the past year has been remarkable. I posted here previously and received the usual platitudes - none of which were backed by action. In fact, things only deteriorated further.
People need to know what an awful brand this has become. énergie will insist that clubs are run by franchisees, yet it is their brand being damaged by how some of those franchises operate.
Locally, torn flooring has been left unrepaired for more than a year, equipment is visibly worn, the gym is freezing in winter and stifling in summer, and repeated price-increase emails citing “upgrades” have produced no visible investment. Staff turnover is constant, the remaining staff increasingly unapproachable, and feedback is either ignored or deflected - even when escalated to Empowered Brands, énergie’s parent company.
Members should also be aware of Clause 9.3 of énergie’s own Terms & Conditions, which allows cancellation if facilities or services fall below a reasonable standard. After more than three years of membership and months of ignored, justified complaints at both club and higher level, I finally cancelled in November. The only interest shown was in recovering a final payment. I blocked the mandate in accordance with their own “breach” clause.
An attempt to take payment on November 30th failed, yet somehow, on December 2nd, a debit was taken anyway via another method. This raises serious questions about how securely member payment data is handled and who has access to it. This payment is now formally disputed with my bank and on principle, I will not be backing down.
A “Franchise Performance Manager” assured me on 14/11 that complaints were taken seriously. I never heard another word. The pattern is clear: silence when standards are questioned, urgency only when money is involved. The lack of oversight from the brand itself is deeply concerning.
My new gym is not perfect, but it is maintained, heated, staffed by people who listen, and invested in - qualities énergie Fitness Mullingar clearly lacks, and which the brand appears unwilling to enforce.
And in anticipation of the inevitable copy-and-paste, AI-generated “we’re sorry to hear this” response: do better. This issue is not going away.
