Can’t Live Without It

Once you get it, you will never go back. Saved a bunch of money and can track all my expenses.

Used some video guides to set it up and some tips. And have been using it for almost 2 years.

Thank you for helping me budget YNAB!

YNAB has been a literal life saver

YNAB has been a literal life saver. I’ve never been more in control of my money. I actually feel financially independent and can put every single dollar to use. Everything about this app has accelerated my life tenfold and will continue to help me for the rest of my life. If you need a budget this is the only app that should be available for budgeting.

For the for time in my life

For the for time in my life, I'm not flying by the seat of my pants on my finances. I now have the funds ready for expenses that always used to sneak up on me. I no longer am scrambling for the funds to pay my bills and I am putting less on my credit cards, and can pay them off quicker. I still have work to do, but I'm getting there.

The cost of the subscription is worth it!!!!

The cost of the subscription is worth what you get. If you're on the fence about whether or not to subscribe, do it. I've tried various budgeting software apps, paper methods, etc. This is the best by far that I've found. You can make an easy to follow budget and set up temporary goals if you're planning for a large expense. You can securely link your bank accounts that you want to track as well! This app has kept me on my budget and helped me to start putting money back into my savings account on a regular basis. The app and the website are both awesome and easy to use. If you struggle with keeping a budget, this app and website is for you!

Not only a financial tool but a real quality of life improvement

I've been accounting my anf then family personal finances for at least 10 years. The journey took several phone apps, spreadsheets and even a self-written application at home.
YNAB is a logic continuation of this journey. Not only it covered everything I developed myself (= it's flexible enough), the team provides a ton of educational articles and videos to catch up and/or learn new ways to use it.
All in all, our family is indeed in the best financial shape than ever! I frankly didn't believe it was possible, but yet it is!

It’s a steep learning curve

It’s a steep learning curve. You guys could and should offer training as a paid service. To get value from your tool people need to “get it” - if they don’t they leave. You could probably charge $200 and we would make it back in savings easily. But I still struggle with basics like credit cards and making the rec sum up

Finally a budget I actually stick to

Honestly, YNAB is a total game-changer. I’ve tried plenty of apps and Excel sheets before, but this is the first one that actually clicked and gave me a clear view of where my money is going.

It’s not just about tracking expenses but about making a plan for every euro before you spend it. Since I started using it, the stress of managing my budget is just... gone. It’s super flexible, but it also keeps me focused on my long-term goals.

If you're serious about getting your finances in order, just get it. Best money I’ve spent in a long time!

I like that the app connects to my…

I like that the app connects to my other financial institutions and seamlessly brings my purchases into the platform. Once I figured it out, tracking those in the budget became very easy and helpful to keep a consistent budget.

However, I don't think the platform is very user-friendly. I wish that while I'm in the "Plan" page of the website, I could click a category and immediately see all of the purchases made for that category. Right now, I have to click "All Accounts," search for that category, and then add up expenses, which is tedious.

Additionally, the yearly goals set are challenging to reset after they are completed. For example, I have funds set aside for my daughter's birthday each year. After her birthday, the platform doesn't have me start saving for her birthday the following year but just says that the funds are spent. Even when I delete the target goal and create a new one, it says that. I don't think the goal setting for categories is particularly intuitive, and that is an example of how.

Also, I wish YNAB could connect with some major retailers so that it could automatically pull the exact items I bought into the memo for it's respective expense in the budget. For example, I consistently shop at Costco. If YNAB had a relationship with Costco where my receipts were inputted into the YNAB platform, I could see how much I spend on diapers at Costco over the course of a year. Tracking specifics like this would be really helpful because I (or ideally YNAB) could help me identify patterns in my shopping. It could tell me if I spend more or less than other people with similar households in my area. This would help me understand if I am generally overspending on things like groceries, car maintenance, insurance, or other regular expenses.

Lastly, I wish the platform would give me feedback on my budget. For example, if there is a monthly category that I consistently overspend on, I wish the platform would flag that pattern for me and provide a new suggested amount. Right now, I have to look through each category individually to see if there is a pattern of overspending and how much.

Overall, I like the platform because I can track everything on there that I need, but I don't think it is intuitive to use and doesn't take the extra step of helping me develop a better budget. Along with tracking my expenses, I want the platform to advise me on ways to save money or improve my budget to make it more consistent with my spending.

Hi Ian! Thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and detailed review. Your feedback on what has worked well for you—as well as what hasn't—is really valuable!

I love your ideas for how YNAB could help rein in overspending or show you more detailed spending comparisons/trends. We appreciate you sharing those and I've made sure to pass them along to the folks on our product team.

Some of the concerns you mentioned are things that we'd love to work through with you! We can chat more about viewing your transactions in a certain category from the Plan tab, making sure your targets are resetting correctly, and using the payee field to view orders from big box stores like Costco. If you'd like to dig into those, reach out anytime at help@ynab.com or through in-app messaging! - Caity @ YNAB

Customer support is utterly useless

Customer support is utterly useless. Why would I pay 15$ a month for a “budgeting” software that I have to MANUALLY INPUT EVERY TRANSACTION because you “don’t know how to fix” my bank connection issues. Stay FAR FAR away from this scammy practice of an app. Use your own spreadsheets and save the money.

I hear your frustration on this, William, and know that it's disappointing when we're not able to offer a solution to bank connection issues. While Direct Import isn't the only way to keep YNAB up to date, we understand that our other transaction entry methods may not be the right fit for everybody. We appreciate you giving YNAB a try and sharing your experience, even when it's not the one we would have hoped for! - Caity @ YNAB

I really love the app 4.9

I really love the app 4.9. Buts its really hard to not use as a typical tracking app. Instead of the real way a planning app. Specially, when one partner does not use it.. but that not on the YNAB team. But great app.

Hi there—thanks for taking the time to post a review! You're right that YNAB is different than typical tracking apps, but that’s exactly what can make it so effective. 😊 Personally, I am the "YNABer" in my family, and my husband never even looks at it, so I understand that can be difficult, but we make it work! If you have specific questions about that (or anything else YNAB-related!), please email help@ynab.com. -Erika@YNAB

Mixed experience

I love the app. The system they have created is helpful and efficient. I stopped using it because my bank account data would be delayed in transfer.my account would always become disconnected from my bank. This caused many errors and made it harder to consistently manage my budget.
