Lesson recording platform is a JOKE
The tutors we have found are fantastic. If you pick carefully, you should do well, and if not, the first one is free.
Where Wyzant SUCKS is in the recordings. The lesson are supposed to be recorded so you can review again later. But their software blows it 9/10 times. Each time in a seemingly different way.
First it doesn't start recording the white board until you switch to the second board, so the first board is missing. (Oh, so you can just switch to the second board then back again and trick the system to start recording? NO! It won't start recording until BOTH 4 minutes or so have passes, AND you switch to a different whiteboard!) (This may only when you upload a PDF to review.)
Once you get past that, it randomly stops (or never starts) recording video, audio, or both. Despite the word "Recording..." flashing on the screen the whole time.
And if either you or the tutor have to leave the lesson and rejoin, forget about it. The rest of the recording is toast.
Beware of Wyzant
Beware of Wyzant - A Disappointing and Frustrating Experience!
I had an extremely negative experience with Wyzart, which I feel compelled to share to warn others. I booked a tutoring session with someone named Yara A., providing my credit card details as required. Unfortunately, the tutor never showed up for the scheduled meeting, leaving me waiting in the virtual room, puzzled and frustrated.
After multiple attempts to contact Wyzant's customer service with no satisfactory response or explanation, I feel misled and mistreated. This unprofessionalism and lack of accountability have led me to believe that Wyzant is not a trustworthy service. I advise everyone to be cautious and steer clear of using Wyzant, especially from dealings with the tutor Yara A. It’s disappointing to see such services taking advantage of customers. Keep away from this service and protect your personal information!
Unprofessional, Unfriendly, Uneducated - Avoid At All Costs!
Some, or most tutors are fine. But the company, policies, business model and practices are highly unprofessional. If you are a tutor you can do better with any other place other than there - any will be more professional and friendly.
Don't waste your time and energy
Don't waste your time and energy! This is a scam. Your time, money, experience and effort is better spent in any other legitimate place.
I had a similar experience to some of…
I had a similar experience to some of the reviewers here—they appear to be quite racist. They let me go through the vetting process, wasting my time, and then told me I didn't pass without providing significant information. This company is terrible, and the reviews speak volumes about them. Your days are numbered—enjoy your little company while it lasts.
RACIST & SKETCHY COMPANY
RACIST & SKETCHY COMPANY. They don’t hire people of color and then don’t tell you why.
“Didn’t meet our vetting processes” is the ONLY reason they gave me after they took all my personal information. SKETCHY COMPANY. Do not trust them.
Wyzant hasn’t addressed tutor misconduct
I wrote the customer support team. One of the tutors made an advance on me and rather than addressing it and taking down the tutors profile they didn’t do anything. This is deeply concerning because they work with children and that would be grooming. Wyzant addresses support requests in 1-3 business days, they haven’t addressed mine in over 2-weeks
I am really surprised at these reviews
I am really surprised at Wyzant’s low ratings here on Trust Pilot, and I do wonder if competitors are manipulating the ratings by submitting negative reviews (to drive potential clients away from Wyzant & toward their own platforms).
As a tutor, I love it. I set my own rates, and I decide who I work with. I can end relationships with students who are rude, flaky, or just not benefitting from tutoring, and I can develop relationships with students who are consistent and who really want to learn.
From the student’s end: it seems to me that the students I’ve worked with have had great experiences with Wyzant (with me & other tutors).
Tips to avoid the problems others are citing:
1) Make sure the tutor you message has a background check so that you can be assured they are who they claim to be.
2) Ask for a free meet & greet prior to booking a session so that you can ask probing questions. I always offer to chat via a video call prior to scheduling, so that students & parents know who/what they are paying for.
3) Ask the tutor what they do if they realize they can’t help a student with the student’s questions. The tutor should answer that they won’t charge you if they don’t know the material. This happens sometimes. No matter how good the tutor is.
4) Send the material you want to cover in advance to ensure the tutor can look it over and prepare.
5) This applies only to the poorly behaved minority of parents/students. Understand that tutors are self-employed and treat them with respect. Show up to appointments, send a message if you’re running late, and remember that we are under no obligation to keep tutoring you if you are unpleasant.
6) Regarding the issue of charges for sessions that never occurred: I would be shocked if this was true. I’ve never had a student complain of a charge for a session that was never completed - not a charge from me or any other tutor they’ve worked with. You can always dispute the transaction with your bank and remove your payment information from Wyzant at literally any time.
In conclusion, as a tutor, I’ve had a great experience with Wyzant, and I’ve yet to meet a student or parent that was displeased with Wyzant. Those who are displeased were probably dropped by tutors due to the reasons I listed above (rude, unpleasant, etc).
scam
so called tutors but they’re really just a bunch of in compassionate scam artists
If you're a tutor
If you're a tutor, Wyzant (pronounced "Wise Ant") is NOT where you want to be.
FYI I'm writing this because they terminated me as a tutor - full disclosure. They have a comprehensive bunch of agreements, and they said it's because of section 18b of the agreement. 18b reads as follows: "(b) Independent Tutor’s material breach of this Agreement, violation of the Wyzant Terms of Use or Tutor Payment Policies, or misuse of the Site. - WITHOUT hyperlinks to the other agreements.
And how did they do this? They just DID IT. They sent me an Email saying they're "ending my access... effective immediately" becaue I supposedly violated the above, and then they ask for DOCUMENTS if I disagree! WHAT documents? To prove or disprove WHAT? And when I write back to ask, they say, "we're customer support - we don't have the ability to research"! NOW what? They say they've "conducted a review". Was I involved? Did they ask me ANYTHING? Did they give even PONE specific detail? NOTHING!
Wyzant is a JOKE, and a bunch of NEO-NAZIs. Tutors and students: AVOID WYZANT LIKE THE PLAGUE!!
Time wasted
I spent quite a bit of time preparing my profile for applying at Wyzant. They said it needed some work and I updated it. They still wanted changes so I tried again. They dumped me. I have vast experience with teaching and tutoring but they apparently want generic profiles that match their algorithms.
So, much time was wasted and I moved on to friendlier tutoring sites.
They seem indifferent to whether their…
They seem indifferent to whether their service works well or not. Besides a clunky UI, the audio recording of your tutoring session can fail to record. So you cannot playback your recording, there is no audio. I would not use them to learn a foreign language. They just say they cannot fix it if it fails to record. Good luck.
Don't use wyzant tutor service!!
This wyzant is terrible company and service. The tutor charges fee without providing the service and the company forces students and parents to pay for the fees! DON'T USE THE SERVICE!! We tried to reach this company to solve the issue. Unfortunately they are only have a robot to reply you. Even we called multiple times, the calls wouldn't have a person to pick up the calls or nor to leave a msg!! No way to reach them!!
Bad website design
I've had to contact customer service twice before even starting a tutoring session. Their UI is bad and not set up well. You would imagine there would be an easier way to set up a household account for payee vs user, like a parent paying for a child's tutoring so they each have a log-in for different users, but they don't. Now the price per hour is wrong. The tutor see the correct amount, I see $10 more per hour, and Wyzant customer service says they can't help. I like the tutor selected, but may have to cancel because of Wyzant.
Terrible website
Terrible website. No matter what I try I cannot even sign into my account and there has been no communication as to whether it has been deactivated.
Genius way of getting rich fast - for the founders!
Wyzant is a genius way of getting rich fast - for the founders! The platform takes 25% commission from tutors and, regardless of a tutor's previous qualifications and experience outside of Wyzant, the platform portrays a tutor's excellence only based on the number of students and hours a tutor gains through its own platform. So, unless you start with an extremely low rate, it's almost impossible to compete with tutors who have dedicated their careers to enriching the Wyzant creators - not worth it for higher experienced tutors that are new to the platform.
My personal experience as a tutor:
I came across an inappropriate student who used vulgar language during lessons and via email, made personal passes at me, and finally began to blackmail me with his power to leave a review. After asking the Wyzant team for help over the phone 3 times, I was informed that they won't do anything about it as their platform is a marketplace for independent tutors. A week later, Wyzant sent me an email deactivating my account without giving any explanation as to why.
I recommend against becoming a tutor on this platform. The competition isn't worth it and their 'routine reviews' are full of it.
Hit or Miss
We have used Wyzant on and off over the past 5 years. We have found a few great tutors that were helpful. Recently, we have had tutors cancel at the last minute. In this case, there is no recourse for the student, only for the tutor if the student cancels on them. Also, you cannot review a tutor that is questionable. The system only allows reviews after more than one lesson. This manipulation ensures the high ratings you see on all tutors on their website.
Waste of time for tutors
I applied to be a tutor and later my account was deactivated according to 18a rule. No further explanations. Waste of time. I should have checked Trustpilot before applying to Wyzant.
Buyer beware
Buyer beware! Hired a tutor for Mcat studies. Paid for services for over a year only to be disclosed to my child by the tutor that the credentials listed were false, the tutor never took the MCAT. This tutor was chosen based on the credentials listed on Wyzant. Wyzant does not check credentials!
Wyzant is a terrible company
Wyzant is a terrible company. The tutors are not vetted, and I'm wondering if some of the tutors are actually qualified to tutor anyone.
The tutors are predatory and unscrupulous.
I emailed a tutor and never agreed to meet him, yet he charged my card over $300.
Another tutor delayed the meeting and used several time-delaying methods to run the clock on our session.
The site is full of scam artists. Beware and stay away from Wyzant!!!! I tried reaching Wyzant and I have not received a response or reply.
