Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 27 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently complained about extremely long phone wait times, consistently unhelpful support teams, and constantly being passed between different departments without any real resolution. Many people also experienced unexpected account blocks, poor communication regarding security matters, and severe ongoing difficulties accessing their hard-earned funds. Some people were dissatisfied with overseas call centers, frustrating automated phone systems, and noticeable language barriers when trying to get urgent help. Consumers additionally mentioned being forced to travel and visit physical branches because standard online procedures and security verification checks failed completely.

St George is the worst bank

St George is the worst bank, especially if you have a Directions and Authority Order issued by NSW Trustee and Guardian Tribunal. They absolutely don’t recognise this. I live overseas, came to Sydney to get everything organised and they are refusing full access to the managed person’s account. How can I pay necessary bills when I’m overseas? I need internet banking access to be able to do this, which they refused. Their excuse is “This is our policy”. So I withdrew all the money and opened up an account in Commonwealth Bank instead. They were very forthcoming and helpful. There are hundreds of people like me who have done the same. I DON’T RECOMMEND THIS BANK.

Pretty bad

Pretty bad. They left a credit card I've overpaid sitting there for 10 years and made no effort to contact me (despite having same email address for 25 years). They only alerted me when they sent the money to ASIC as unclaimed. It was rather painful getting my money back.

They declined a loan app as I am a single woman. I have no debt, very good income, very low overheads as I own my property outright but they refused a $50k home improvement loan with no reason. Terrible bank if you are female and have no debt they don't want to deal with you.

Incompetent Staff who give you the wrong information.

I have been banking with St George since 2009 and have my home loan with them. Recently I went to pay out a large part of my loan and was told by 2 phone banking operators how it would work. 2! Only for the WRONG information to have been given and the consequences of that were VERY costly.
I am now going to pay out the remaining balance and take my business elsewhere.
Absolutely disgraceful. You would think after 7 home loan increases in less than a year they would treat their customers better. Train your staff properly !!!! I will never bank with them again!

My 96 year old mother in law had a term…

My 96 year old mother in law had a term deposit with them which matured last month. She has just discovered that they chose to roll it over into a new TD offering only 0.35%. This is roughly one tenth of commonly available rates. When we complained on her behalf at the branch we were told that there was a 30 day wait to get her money out and that she would lose most of the paltry amount of interest she had earned.
This is disgusting taking an old lady's money at such a pathetic rate and then refusing to immediately rectify the situation.
Most banks currently offer maturity options of paying out the TD or rolling it over at their then commercial rate. St George appear to have a third option (or trap for the unwary) that if you fail to select one of the first two they take your money at minimal interest and lock it in.

Amplify Platinum Visa Applications misleading

Amplify Platinum Applications default to another card - watch out!

So you see a nice Qantas bonus points on the platinum card offer, you follow the prompts all the way to the application, answer hundreds of questions and submit. Get the card weeks later and get told on the form one of the questions defaulted "type of card" to another basic card, that is not the platinum card with the promotion.

not only is this a waste of time to problem solve, each application affects a person's credit history. The operators take 40 mins each to respond and you get bounced around at least a few times, so don't bother calling unless you have 1-2 hours.

After my 4th attempt of calling, they say casually cancel the card and reapply- never mentioning once that this damages credit reports.

The sly set up and highly inefficient bureaucracy at this bank made it my first and last dealing with St George bank.
