Beware of Privacy Issues

My experience with Space Shop Self Storage – Conyers Station was very disappointing.

My account was only a few days late when the repeated collection calls began. During one of those early conversations, I advised the representative that I would be making my payment after I returned from out of town. Despite communicating my intentions, the repeated calls continued.

My concern was never that Space Shop contacted me regarding my account. I expected that. My concern began when they decided to contact the emergency contact listed on my account and discuss my account even though they had already been communicating directly with me and I was fully aware of my account status.

On August 4, I went to the office and spoke with Jason in person to address that issue. During that meeting, Jason cited Paragraph 34 of the rental agreement as authority for contacting my emergency contact. After reviewing that paragraph while standing in the office, I did not believe it authorized the disclosure of my account information to anyone other than me.

During that same meeting, I also advised Jason that I intended to bring my account current the following week and asked why my personal lock needed to be cut when I had already communicated my intention to pay before any sale of my property. I suggested simply placing an overlock on the unit instead of destroying my lock and requiring me to purchase another one. My question was never answered.

The very next day, after our in-person discussion and after I had also followed up in writing confirming my intention to make payment, I continued receiving additional emails and communications regarding the same account. My lock was cut, additional fees were added to my account, and I received a lien notice even though I had already advised the office of my payment plans.

Professional communication is expected when an account becomes delinquent. However, I believe there is a difference between communicating with a customer and repeatedly contacting them after they have acknowledged the debt, explained when payment will be made, and met with management in person. My experience left me feeling that my concerns were not heard or respected.

Based on my experience, I encourage prospective customers to carefully review their rental agreement, understand the company’s collection practices, and keep detailed records of all communications.
