Disappointing
Having seen this restaurant for years sitting alongside the Swindon to Oxford road, I had great expectations when I booked a table to meet with my children. The booking itself was easy enough although a deposit of £15 per head was required and this was followed with a reminder or two that we were restricted to just 2 hours and would lose the deposit if we were late for our table. Not really user friendly but it was an external app being utilised by the restaurant.
We had all studied the menu and decided what we wanted before we arrived, on time, lest we be hit with a financial penalty. However, what none of us has picked up on was the fact that it was a buffet style lunch. The service was attentive but the food really was disappointing. Not in terms of the taste and flavours, but the fact that the choice was limited and the food was tepid. Given this would be a mid-placed eatery in terms of price, hot food and choice should be a prerequisite.
The service and friendliness of the staff was excellent. Plates were cleared quickly and drinks orders were quick and efficient. I guess it helped that there appeared to be more staff than patrons. However, the service also came over as being rushed, I don’t think they had another group coming through, rather they were just looking to close the restaurant until the evening rush. A little more effort and this could have been an excellent experience. We were literally being ushered out as the two hour time limit was reached.
At a time when restaurants are complaining about a lack of custom and putting their prices up to compensate, they should be trying much, much harder to make each and every visit a memorable experience. Why threaten people with losing their deposits if they are a few minutes late? Why not offer a menu service rather than a buffet service or at least offer a good choice and ensure the food is hot? Why make your patrons feel rushed when they are paying nearly £30 a head to spend some quality time with family? We ended up in a freezing car park having a chat.
I had high expectations which is why I have been particularly critical of this establishment. It is midway between where my children and I live and would have been our go to restaurant 5 or 6 times a year. It was a is a missed opportunity. I suspect their dinner experience is miles better but, for lunch, they need to either up their game or not bother opening. For me, I felt short-changed in terms of time and value.
