Shangri! La Kuala Lumpur

Tired and outdated hotel. Used to be good now way behind the competition. Staff are not helpful. Rooms tired. Swimming pool cold and poorly maintained. Not family friendly.

Careless Disregard at The Shard, London

For an extraordinarily priced lesson in being treated with careless disregard, I recommend a visit to the Shangri-La hotel at The Shard in London.

Let's start with the good stuff. At 8 times the average nightly rate for London, you DO get the most exceptional view of London City - no question about it. The room features floor to ceiling glass walls and the view will absolutely blow you away. In room features are as you would expect, even if I found my upgraded room a bit crammed for space. Staff is professional to the point of almost seeming friendly (explained below), the Ting restaurant is good, the Cocktail bar is above average with a good selection and the same fantastic view.

But that's where it ends for me. Look, I'm sorry, but when I'm paying £800 a night for a room I expect nothing but the best. I spend well over a hundred nights a year on hotels around the world, I do believe I know a thing or two about what one can expect. And Shangri-La failed, on three occasions.

I arrived a couple of hours early. Having already informed the hotel staff in advance of my flight arrival, most hotels would do what they could to ensure the room is ready or at least moved to the top of the list for cleaning and preparation. No such thing. After being told that my room wasn't _quite_ ready yet but it should be ready within the hour, I sat down and waited. Not one, not two, but three hours - 15:00 on the dot to be precise - which is exactly when the hotel promises rooms to be ready. So you could say, they fulfilled their promise. I can then say, on every other hotel I've ever stayed at - even when arriving a bit early - they go out of their way to ensure I get my room as quickly as possible. At Shangri-La, no one cared.

Later that evening I invite some friends over (we're all in town for a business convention) to the Cocktail bar. While sipping away at our £20-a-piece cocktails, a glass literally shatters in the hand of one of my friends. I'm telling you, he did nothing but pick it up for a sip. His cocktail spills all over himself and the table and floor. As one would expect, upon realising, the staff rushes in with cloths and so on. And _they quickly start wiping the table and floor_. My friend is sitting there, soaked. Only after commenting on the obvious lack of priorities does the staff realise; "oh... here's a cloth sir". And about half an hour later they DO come back to offer to pay for cleaning of the clothes; by then it was all but too late. No one at Shangri-La cared.

My last disappointment was at checkout. As many hotels do, my card had been pre-authorized to cover the cost of my stay. This is fine. But the checkout staff didn't obviously care enough to actually make use of this £2500 authorization on my card, and proceeded to bill me for the full amount. I'm obviously fine with them billing my card for the stay - but leaving a £2500 block on a guest's card for 30 days without even informing the guest so one can make another payment choice - that's just showing complete disregard. I complained about this and the hotel staff was very quick to respond, saying it was a mistake and "procedures have been rectified" and the block on my card had been lifted and this would show after 3-5 business days. Also this was a complete falsum; nothing changed. But they "hoped I enjoyed my stay anyway".

And that's my overall experience of the staff at Shangri-La. They treat you with complete disregard.

The Shard, London

I stayed at The Shard, Shangri-La for Christmas.

It was an excellent experience from start to finish. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and I was pleasantly surprised by the facilities of the hotel. I would highly recommend trying the swimming pool which has beautiful views of London and relaxation areas.

The food was delicious at Ting restaurant and I truly appreciated all the extras which we were given throughout our hotel stay (such as Christmas themed chocolate gifts, and additional surprises throughout).

It has been my best hotel stay thus far.

Fair value exchange

I feel compelled to give an opinion on a business which over the last few years i have used regularly as i travel on business.

I love the fact that wherever you are in the world you get a very similar standard of service - excellent.

Yes you pay a premium price but in my opinion the customer in general gets a fair value exchange.

Very disappointed, not worth the money, BAD service!!!!

Me and my family booked our dream holiday on Borneo on this lovely resort. We had High expetations due to the price and photos.
When we arrived we were blown away by the kindness that met us in the lobby. We thought that this resort would be perfect.. Sadly it wasn't....
The next morning we visited the breakfast buffet. Kids running around everywhere, people were yelling and caos. Well "hell on earth" for us when we expect relaxation and luxury on a 5 Star beach resort! We complained about it and the restaurant manager agreed to serve breakfast at our rooms every morning. We should order what we wanted the day before on a note and put it on the doorknob outside. Unfortunately we should every day remind the staff that we needed a new "breakfast note", and when we kindly asked for it they forgot.....
When we finally got the breakfast to our rooms eggs were cold, the fruit was brown, the pancakes were dry and every Goddamn time something was missing!!!...
The service on the restaurants were SO BAD!! There were always minimum 5-10 things on the menu that were "sold out", it took forever to place an order, and even longer to get the drinks.. We experience a lot of times that we couldn't eat together because they forgot something we ordered or because the steak was totally "ruined well-done". Again I will remind you, that this is a 5 Star resort and they even promote that they have a Michelin-chef...
The only thing on this resort that live up to the expetations is the beautiful surroundings, the hotelrooms and the healthclub.
We will never ever go there again - so disapointed that we wasted so much money on something that is DEFINETLY NOT worth it.... :-(

Long stay and I was kept very happy - Sydney, Australia branch

I'm fussy with hotels so when booked in to the Shangri-La, Sydney Australia for 4 weeks on business I expected to have got fed up with them by the end of the second week and would need to move.

Actually they were pretty lovely. The hotel good, if you were being critical, take a refurb. It's not of quite the same decor class as the recently refurbished Four Seasons around the corner. But that is reflected in the price and my room at the Shangri-La was the cheapest of the major hotels in central Sydney.

The service though was great. I always think that Asian chains do a better job of customer service than American and they really did show that here. Everyone from reception to concierge to room service to spa and restaurant were really, naturally friendly and welcoming - whatever the time of day.

I ended up really enjoying my stay at the Shangri-La Syndey and I've already booked another 13 day stay there for my next business trip. I would recommend it.
