1* at best
My family and I have stayed at Rodos Palace on several occasions over a number of years. Unfortunately, after our most recent stay and the appalling way my subsequent complaint was handled, we will not be returning.
The hotel itself has deteriorated noticeably. We found a number of staff members unfriendly and unwelcoming, the food was barely edible, and the rooms are desperately in need of upgrading. My apartment was extremely basic and absolutely nothing special for a hotel that presents itself at this level.
More seriously, during our stay a family member had water pouring through a light fitting and onto electrical appliances in their room. Despite this being an obvious concern, nothing meaningful was done about it. That alone was extremely disappointing.
The all-inclusive offering has also changed significantly since our previous stay. There were approximately three choices available to us, a noticeable reduction from what was included last year. For something marketed as all-inclusive, we found the offering incredibly limited.
However, what ultimately prompted this one-star review was what happened after we returned home.
I checked out at Reception in July and personally handed my room key card to a member of staff. Nothing was said about an outstanding balance, and I left in good faith believing my account had been dealt with.
Then, on 30 August, approximately £500 was unexpectedly taken from my card by Rodos Palace, several weeks after my departure. I received no email, telephone call or other notification beforehand.
When I contacted the hotel, they acknowledged that their own team had failed to identify and collect the outstanding accommodation balance earlier. To be absolutely clear, I never disputed that accommodation provided should be paid for. My complaint was very simple: once the hotel discovered its own error several weeks later, why was I not contacted before approximately £500 was taken from my card?
Instead of answering that question, Ioannis Pastrikos, Director of Sales, repeatedly focused on telling me that the accommodation had been provided and the money was due — something I had never disputed.
I was also initially questioned as to whether I had actually checked out at Reception or had simply “departed without completing the check-out procedure”. I found that particularly insulting considering I did attend Reception and personally returned my room key card. At no point was I informed that any accommodation balance remained outstanding.
After repeatedly asking why the hotel had not simply contacted me before processing the payment, Mr Pastrikos eventually responded that their internal control process identified the balance and the payment was processed once identified, adding: “It is as simple as that.” I found the tone dismissive and completely inappropriate for someone dealing with a legitimate complaint from a returning guest. I was then repeatedly informed, in bold, that the hotel considered the matter concluded.
The irony is that this entire situation could have been avoided with one courteous email. After several years of my family choosing Rodos Palace, they have lost us as returning customers.
There are plenty of hotels in Rhodes competing for people’s business. Based on this experience, I could not recommend Rodos Palace and will spend my money elsewhere in future.
