Takes your money and ignores you

Absolutely appalled by Razzamataz Newcastle. They promised to accommodate my child and their disability, offering weekly updates to reassure us they were coping okay in the classes - so we signed up to the direct debits. We never received a single update and felt like they had just left our child without any support. Upon expressing our concerns we eventually got an email back admitting they had not done what they promised and they didn't think that the classes were suitable for our child at present. They said they would be in touch about cancelling the contract. It's been weeks and our emails are just being ignored. We expressed our desire to leave weeks ago and requested our money back for the weeks our child did not attend after telling them we were unhappy and leaving. They broke their promise made at the start of the contract and couldn't accommodate my child - I should not have to pay for their failings.

The Razzamatazz school at Chelmsford has been absolutely superb since my daughter started 2 years ago. She loves the performances as do the parents. Highly recommended.

RAZ Mansfield Notts

There's a lot of positives in sending your child to a theatre school if the school is run properly.

At this particular Raz the phrase (you have to be in the click) is moulded into its stage foundations which is sad because there is a lot of confident children falling under the radar. I speak on behalf of my own child who I'll not refer to as he/she they've been going now for 4 years & in that time he/she has only been praised once with a star of the week (4 years) now I won't big up my child and say he/she is confident if their not & I certainly wouldn't spend the amount of money I have for 4 years & will continue to do so if I thought they wasn't getting enjoyment or anything out of it. However in 4 years my child hasn't got so much as a pat on the back even when a few years ago they were running short on students attending the main May performance because their parents had decided to take them on holiday ... They asked if my child would step up & come to all the shows that weekend to accommodate Raz which is fine & they did but to not even give my child a star of the week the following weekend for just effort was abysmal... My child comes home deflated most weeks ....he/she goes to Raz excited but then gets in the car & says "it's the same kid as the other week mum & she didn't even do much today" ( as a teacher myself you have to reward children to keep them interested.

My child has bags of confidence he/she stands up on stage and effortlessly does what she needs to do with no red face in sight & with a loud clear voice (i see this myself when I attend their performances so you can understand my frustrations when it gets them NOWHERE at Raz. I did start to question whether they wasn't confident maybe they're different at Raz but to see them perform on the odd opportunities we get as parents I have my doubts erased especially when others come to me & say they did great so clear & loud it just doesn't make sense to me to never get recognised.

I am reviewing all star of the week photos every week for the past several months when they get released on s/m & 9/10 times it's the same few children every few weeks your schools funding isn't based on just a handful of children ... We all pay the same amount. I write this review in the hope something changes I don't know how star of the week works but surely even if the most quietest kid in the back comes out of their shell one week that should be praised right ... To boost their confidence more that's all a child needs we don't send them to theatre school to hide in the shadows forgotten about. It's annoyed me that much that if something doesn't change I'll be sending them to Stagecoach which is heartbreaking as they've made friends at Raz.

I will add the teachers are warm & friendly enough but they definitely have (favourite children) that get recognised every week. I have raised this along time ago now with a teacher but nothing's changed

We’re really sorry to hear that you feel this way, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. We always want every child to feel valued and encouraged at Razzamataz, so we take feedback seriously and are keen to act on it.

However, as you haven’t mentioned the specific school or Principal, it’s difficult for us to carry out a thorough investigation, but we would be more than happy to discuss this with you directly. If you’d be happy to email our Office, we’d love the opportunity to look into this further.

Star of the Week is designed to celebrate every child’s unique contributions, and we aim to ensure that all students receive recognition over time. We understand your frustration and absolutely agree that all children should feel acknowledged for their efforts. You mentioned that your child is very confident, which is fantastic.
Sometimes, our Principals choose to recognise students in areas where they have shown growth or overcome challenges, but without knowing the full details, it’s hard for us to comment accurately on your child’s experience.

We really appreciate your continued support over the past four years and wish your child the best in their future. Please do reach out via email so we can discuss this further.

Disappointing Experience at Chester Razzamataz

This review is specifically for Chester Razzamataz, as I can’t speak for the other Razzamataz schools.

Having had a positive experience with another dance school, I had high hopes when my child joined Razzamataz. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of expectations. The entire set-up felt like organised chaos, and I was left questioning what I was paying for in the end.

Firstly, the environment is extremely cliquey. It’s obvious that certain children are favoured by the staff, which is quite disheartening. After my daughter’s first session, I was keen to receive some feedback on how she was getting on, but the teacher didn’t even know which parent I was. When I asked for feedback, it was vague and repetitive each week. Despite attending for several months, my daughter was never once recognised with ‘Star of the Week’. I understand that she may not have been the best, but these things should be done fairly to help build the children’s confidence.

The atmosphere was not a pleasant one, and I noticed a significant decline in my daughter’s confidence during her time there. Thankfully, she has since moved to a new performing arts school, where she is thriving and has regained the confidence that this place seemed to strip away.

The school is run by a very young individual, and it’s clear that there is a lack of experience. While the relatively low fees may seem appealing, I would recommend spending a little more elsewhere if you want a positive, confidence-building experience for your child. Unless your child enjoys playing "What’s the Time, Mr Wolf?" or pretending to be a toy from *Toy Story* for an hour every Saturday, I’d suggest looking at other options.

Thank you for sharing your concerns. We take all feedback very seriously and have conducted a thorough investigation before responding.

We have spoken with the Principal about your concerns. She will be addressing this with her teaching staff to ensure that all customer feedback is prioritised and reported directly to her moving forward. In this case, we are unable to comment on the specific concern as the Principal was not informed at the time. However, she is committed to ensuring this protocol is followed in the future.

Regarding the recognition of each child’s unique talents, this is a core value we deeply uphold. The Principal confirmed that every student is awarded Star of the Week to highlight their individual strengths. However, with 15 Mini students and only 12 weeks in a term, some children may receive their award in the following term. We believe this is likely what occurred in your daughter’s case.

We sincerely apologise for your and your daughter's experience, as this does not reflect the typical experience at Razzamataz. We will continue to support the Principal in maintaining our brand standards and can only apologise once again.

We wish your daughter the very best in her future endeavours.

My daughter and son loves going razz

My daughter and son loves going razz, every week she gets so excited. We’ve just added on project intense and private singing lessons as she wants a career in theatre and they couldn’t be more supportive. My 4 year old was also able to perform in their yearly performance and really enjoyed it. They are very patient with the students especially the younger ones. We did have an issue with another student but it was very quickly dealt with. I’m amazed how far my SEND child has come in the year and a half she has been going there. I couldn’t thank them enough for everything they have done especially taking such fantastic care for my children.

I don’t have children attending at…

I don’t have children attending at Razz, but I have known of friends’ children as well as teacher friends that have nothing but positive experiences of Razz!

I have my own small school, but I did look into franchising a Razzamataz many years ago. I was so impressed by their ethos, and the love and care that has been put into the brand and model to create inclusivity. I’ve also had friends that have worked for Razz too, and all have said how amazing the setup is for everyone involved. They’ve also won franchisee satisfaction awards too. If that doesn’t spell professional, I don’t know what will!

I’m a stickler for safeguarding, and proper compliant systems when it comes to children. However, Razz go above and beyond for their students & franchisees.

Amazing network!

Do not recommend - No safeguarding

My daughter attended Razzamataz for a short period of time and had to leave due to the distress & anxiety caused whilst attending.
My daughter loved Razz when she started, she was more confident and really enjoying the classes.
Sadly, there was an incident one day where another pupil threatened her and her friend and physically assaulted another. I raised this with the principle and was told that they are a SEND pupil and tried to explain this to the children. I understand this however, there should be no circumstance where my child, or any other children, are at risk.

My daughter now experiences anxiety as a result of this incident and I would not recommend these classes and their lack of safeguarding, to anyone.

To add insult to injury - I still had to pay for 8 weeks after she stopped going!

Hello Gemma,

Your statement that we have ‘no safeguarding’ is factually incorrect.

We put the safety and wellbeing of our students at the very core of everything we do. We have a dedicated safeguarding officer on hand 24/7, and very strict safeguarding procedures & policies all our teams adhere to.

In fact, just last week we received this statement from a headteacher:

"It was the best safeguarding document that I have ever seen for an external club."

Please also see below a response from the Principal of the school your daughter attended:

"I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is struggling with anxiety. However, I disagree entirely with your statement that we lack safeguarding, as we have a very robust policy that all staff are familiar with.

I've looked back at our short email correspondence at the end of the Spring term 2023, about the verbal incident that you refer to between two other students that originally upset your daughter. However, at no time was a student physically assaulted, as of course that would have warranted a much stronger and more immediate response from us.

As I explained on the 28th March, we had spoken to your daughter at the time and she was all smiles with her friends shortly afterwards, including the one who had been shouted at. I also explained that we'd spoken to the SEND student from the older group about his behaviour, and continued to monitor the entire group for the rest of the morning as always.

Your response to my email (dated 29th March):

Hello
Thanks so much for coming back to me. It is really reassuring to know that you have this in hand and are aware.
I have explained to xx the same about the child, she sits with a SEND child at school but her understanding is limited.
See you saturday.
G

We then continued to work with the SEND student and his parents over a number of weeks to ensure there were no repeats, and of course the groups only occasionally worked together in the following weeks up to the summer half term, during which time your daughter's attendance was 100% (including Easter School), and we were given no further indication, by either her or yourself that she was at all unhappy.

Admittedly after the May half term she stopped coming in the build up to the showcase, although as she was so disappointed not to be taking part in the show itself, we believed that was the main reason for her absence.
When you emailed on 22nd June to say that she was still upset, it did come as a surprise.

In regards to the final payments this same email from you stated:

Am I right in thinking it’s 6 weeks notice? Does xx attend during this time?

I accepted your notice, and did say your daughter could attend, and that her class was not working with the student that had upset her friend previously. At no point did you indicate that you were unhappy to pay this, or ask that I waive any of the remaining fees. The final DD was processed on the 8th July, as it wasn't cancelled by you before then.

It was very disappointing to receive notification of this unfair review after so much time, when you have not taken any opportunity to express your dissatisfaction with me directly other than the 2 emails back in March/June.

We pride ourselves at Razz in offering a safe and secure environment for all of our students, and always look to learn quickly from any incidents that do occur."

Kind regards,
The Razzamataz Head Office Team

My experience in Razzamataz in 2016, even if this was ages ago, it should be recognised.

I would like to stay anonymous. In high-sight this may never happened in other Razzamataz, but this was my experience in Medway as a student. And I wanted to share, because it had been something that been bothering me. Even if it not all bad, I definitely didn’t feel happy when I kept going throughout my years, in that theatre school knowing well how biased it had been. And it’s kinda upsetting how it did affect me as a child growing up. This theatre had never felt more unfair, and ugly in the inside, in my entire life, as I lived thinking as a child, that it was fair, and realistic, and maybe other students tried harder then me. But I will just begin writing on my first year in Razzamataz, it seemed fine at first, until scrips rolled around, for when we have to begin to prepare our big performance, such as musicals like lion king exc. And as a child, I loved drama, it had been one of what I had been most excited for. I had loved acting, on pair with dancing (but not as much). So I had tried really hard to give some engagement into my script. Until judging came around, from that, to results, it really made me excited as a child, I didn’t care much if I got the lead, I had at-least wanted a small part of it, a character. The results were in, and I didn’t get anything. I was disappointed, sure, but I was used to being disappointed before, so I wasn’t as heartbroken as I should be. But noticing now the mistakes as an adult. Even if I didn’t get the part. The drama teacher, should’ve really spoken on mistakes that had been done. To then made sure her students have another shot/chance next time, with some key actor skills. But that wasn’t the case, there was no feedback. Moving on to dance. Dance had always been my second passion, And since I was always the tallest of my class, I was always in the back. I don’t think you know horrible is living with the fact ‘because your tall, you have to be in the back, so the shorter ones will always shine from the front’. There was no competition of who was the best, or who put the most effort. And it’s funny, they will always try to do different dimensions of shapes, to give more chance for the people always put in the back (due to height) a bit more to the front. I would be lucky if I had been put a bit to the front. They would always say ‘background people are like jigsaw peices. To make the full picture’ but lets be real, would anyone really care? If that one background girl was missing? But as a kid, I went with the idea, trying my hardest with performing, I wanted to be noticed. I never got any attention. And singing was never my passion, knowing I am terrible at singing, so as expected I wouldn’t shine at that either. As it finally rolled into the final performance, I tried my hardest as usual. And as I don’t want to overdue the negatives, I did have fun for that small moment. But as expected with photographers, and of course I don’t expect them to take a lots of shots of each, and every kid. But it was clear they favoured the people with the bigger roles. Or were in the front lines when it came to dancing. Or when you had a singing role. The people in the back, had one picture, lucky if they had 2/3 done. And this continued for every year, I would never get the roles, I would continue being the back, no matter how much I rehearsed my lines, or actually cared about my acting, it didn’t feel like I was ever good enough, or it just didn’t matter. It was quite obvious who were the favourites, because it had been the same people who had always got a role in it. And the the dance teacher had always seemed biased of her shortest students, maybe because they get along with her so well. It felt it was always promised that space would be there’s. And there would be no way of the tall people to ever be placed in the front. No matter how much you smiled, no matter how much you tried, no matter how much personality you put into the movement. Who cares, it didn’t matter. I felt the urge to not care about remembering the movements. And it only left to my passion in the theatre. It has rolled into one of years, of me being disappointed again, I had opened my feelings to my mum, but I had never wanted her to do anything about it. Since I didn’t want to known as that bratty kid that gets what she wants, to then cry when not offered. But she persisted anyways without my consent, if I had been stronger, and less tolerant to their bs, I would’ve spoken up about the neglect or care of that running bias. It took that one talk, for one of the heads of our year, to speak to me privately, and yes I kept it hidden, but I did finally agreed to the having a role. But it just never felt right, it didn’t feel earned. But felt like I did notice the bias once a student wouldn’t preform a line, from how ridiculous it sounded. Which in thoughts, didn’t feel fair, as an actor, your meant to play the character, not get personal on how you will act on it-

Super Razzmatazz!

Jude & Phil are exceptionally talented individuals who really care about their students. My daughter joined Razzmatazz last year and her confidence has thrived ever since. We value the ethos of the school so much we even enrolled our son who again has thrived in this environment. We can’t wait to see their performance in June. We 100% recommend this club to anyone who wishes to explore the creative arts!

Both my girls go here and absolutely love it. My eldest was sometimes a little unconfident but since going Razzamataz she has gained so much more confidence. My girls idolise the staff and have made such beautiful friends there too. Jess and the staff work so hard to make it a fun place for the children but somewhere where they actually learn too. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
