Stay away from these rogue traders
I recently encountered this company online, and regret making a purchase from them, having had a dreadful experience. Please do not part with your cash, as Plastidip is a completely untrustworthy and dishonest company. For some reason my rating of Plastidip is appearing as higher than I selected. I would give them a rating of 0 if that was an option.
I purchased a tube of vinyl adhesive through their website (Plastidip Vyna Bond, 29ml tube), and my order total came to £13.20. Before placing my order, I carefully read through the product description on their website. However, when I received the item, I was surprised to find that there were several serious health and safety warnings on the outer packaging, that were not disclosed in the product description on their website. The various warnings read:
WARNING: FLAMMABLE LIQUID AND VAPOR. VAPOR HARMFUL. MAY IRRITATE SKIN OR EYES.
WARNING: FLAMMABLE. VAPOR HARMFUL. HARMFUL OR FATAL IF SWALLOWED.
And most worryingly
WARNING: THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS A CHEMICAL KNOWN TO THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO CAUSE CANCER AND BIRTH DEFECTS, OR OTHER REPRODUCTIVE HARM.
I decided not to keep the product after seeing these warnings, e-mailing Plastidip straight away to notify them I would be returning the item, and why. I then returned it promptly, unopened and in the same condition in which I'd received it. A few days later, I was notified through Paypal that they had granted me a partial refund of £4, instead of the £13.20 I was owed (the cost of returning the item by recorded post was also at my own expense). They claimed they issued only a partial refund as the item had been opened and used, and was not in a saleable condition, so they had refunded just £4 as a 'goodwill gesture'.
This was utterly untrue and when I called Plastidip to query it, the phone was answered by a very discourteous man. When I explained what had happened and that the item was definitely returned unopened and unused, he persevered with the lie that it had been opened and used. He then put the phone down before the matter could be resolved. When I called Plastidip again, the same man answered, but attempted to change his voice, and claimed he was someone else, and had no idea what I was talking about. When I asked to know who I was talking to, he refused to give me his name, continuing to talk in a silly, high-pitched voice. He again put the phone down. It was simply bizarre.
I was astonished by Plastidip's dishonesty, and their sheer rudeness. If there was no wrongdoing on the part of Plastidip, then why did the person I spoke to refuse to give me his name, and feel the need to put on a fake voice to avoid talking to me?
Aside from withholding the money I was owed, and the time it took me to pursue the matter, I certainly find it concerning that they would sell a product that carries such serious health and safety warnings, and not even disclose the warnings before the point of sale. This is surely not in the best interests of the consumer, who should have access to this information before purchase. They have yet to respond to these safety concerns.
I had thought, since I had payed through Paypal, I would be protected against a rogue trader and would be able to recover my money. After following the procedure for opening a dispute, a refund was denied by Paypal, because according to them the purchased item does not meet the requirements to be 'significantly not as described'. Even so, I should have been entitled to a refund as I returned the product unopened and unused, but Paypal has not responded to this and gave only a vague explanation. Buyers should be aware that Paypal's so-called buyer protection is completely useless in cases like this, and should not be trusted.
I have since been in touch with Trading Standards, and they confirmed that Plastidip has not followed the normal safety guidelines that traders are required to follow. They are currently being investigated by Trading Standards. It is worth noting that the products sold by Plastidip are manufactured in the U.S, and they do not adhere to U.K safety guidelines.
Needless to say, I will not be buying anything from these rogue traders again, and do not recommend them to anyone.
