Great way to sell a sports or performance car

Everything was clearly explained up front including the costs I'd be expected to pay. Auction was well-timed to finish mid-evening on the closing date, and I was quickly put in touch with the winner. Handover of the car was relatively simple compared with a conventional private sale, as all details have already been provided to bidders ahead of the live event.

Professional from the start

I recently sold my car through PistonHeads auction platform and the experience was excellent from start to finish.

The process was clear, well-managed and professionally handled throughout. Communication was prompt and transparent, and I always felt informed about what was happening at each stage of the auction. The team provided helpful guidance on pricing and positioning, which ultimately resulted in a smooth sale.

The transaction itself was straightforward, secure and efficient — exactly what you want when selling a vehicle.

I wouldn’t hesitate to use PistonHeads again and would highly recommend their auction service to anyone looking for a professional and hassle-free selling experience.

Worst decision I made using PistonHeads

After deciding to sell my ‘66 Mustang Boss, a friend recommended I contact PistonHeads. I sent the information across to be told that I had lost almost £6000 on the mustang in a few years and the sales consultant was adamant I wouldn’t get more than £22k for it because his brother had a ‘66 mustang and he knew the values of these cars. I contacted other car sales sites as this didn’t sound right and they confirmed that the car was worth a lot more than £22k in its condition.
Anyways, they put it up at the reserve price I asked and it sold.
I waited a week to hear from the buyer, nothing heard so I called him. I offered to get the car transported to him in central London if he provided me with a date that suited but he said he would rather arrange for his own collection. No problem at all, so I wait another two weeks to hear back and nothing heard. I messaged the seller to ask if he was still interested and this wasn’t the style of business I felt comfortable with and would happily re list the car, if he wasn’t interested.

I contacted PistonHeads and asked them to call me and I was told that they hard received their money for the sale, and would contact the buyer to find out what is happening. Nothing heard back and no doubt because they had received their money. The after sales was non existent and it was obvious that I was going to get zero support on completing the sale of the car. Never again will I use pistonheads and I will be warning friends and family off from using them. Such a let down. A waste of almost a month listing the Mustang.

Thanks for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We are sorry the process has left you feeling let down, as that is not the experience we want for anyone selling a car with us.

Our specialists base their valuations on historic market data and the specific history of the vehicle. While your car was presented as a 66 Boss, our inspection and records confirmed it was originally a six cylinder notchback with a later 302 engine fitted. Because that combination was never produced by the factory in 1966, it sits in a different part of the market to an original Boss 302. That was reflected in the auction, where the highest independent underbid reached £22,000.

The car reached your reserve because the winning bidder chose to increase their own bid to meet your target, rather than being taken there by a run of competing bids. While we are pleased the sale reached the figure you were aiming for, that kind of bidding pattern can lead to the delays you've experienced.

Our team has been in touch with the buyer, who has also been completing another purchase with us, and we have followed up again to get a clear answer for you rather than leave you in limbo.

We pride ourselves on realistic advice to give both seller and buyer the best chance of a smooth handover. If this buyer does not complete the transaction, we are committed to discussing the next steps with you to get the car sold to a committed lead.

Best regards,
The PH Auctions Team

FANTASTIC SERVICE FROM PISTONHEAD TEAM

Really great service from Dave and his team. We were looked after from start to finish with a problem free sale. Would definitely recommend to other auction novices like myself as a alternative way to sell your car.

Terribly run outfit.

Terribly run outfit.
Their poorly run forum which is a magnet for cranks probably puts people off posting a classified ad.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. PistonHeads has always had a busy forum with strong opinions and the occasional oddball, but plenty of people enjoy that side of it and many still come here first to buy and sell cars.

We do have moderation in place and a lot of members who are simply there to talk cars rather than cause trouble. If there is something specific you think we should be looking at, we are happy to hear more, but we are not seeing that the forums are putting people off using the classifieds.

I was pressured to release a car before the finance could confirm they had received payment and hit with terms and conditions the moment the auction ended. I won’t be using this company ever again.

Hi William,

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We are sorry the end of the sale felt pressured, as the aim was to help get the car collected before your holiday rather than add another thing to worry about.

In those last steps our job is to oversee the handover so both you and the buyer are happy, and the guidance we gave was meant to help you finish the deal in that time frame, not to push you into letting the car go before you felt comfortable.

We are sorry we missed the mark in how that came across. We do appreciate you choosing PistonHeads Auctions and are happy to talk it through directly if you would like to get in touch.

Best,
PistonHeads Auctions Team

I’ve been advertising my car on…

I’ve been advertising my car on PistonHeads for over a week now, but it doesn’t appear in my saved searches. I suspect others with saved searches have the same issue, meaning my car is only visible to those who conduct new searches, which many account holders might not do. Additionally, the phone number tab requires pressing twice to connect, as it initially displays an error message. This could deter some users from trying again. I emailed PistonHeads' support over four days ago, but aside from the automated response, I’ve heard nothing. The service is disappointing and feels like a waste of money since my ad has limited visibility and contacting me seems problematic. So far, the only interactions I’ve received are from scammers attempting to lure me to fake sites. In hindsight, I should have chosen another platform like Autotrader, where the software is more reliable.

This was a brilliant service to sell my car. At the outset I was given thorough advice on the process and how the car would be sold. The outcome came to a satisfactory result and I would recommend the company to sell a car.

Thanks for flagging this. That kind of mismatch can sometimes come from external data sources rather than the listing itself. If you can send us the registration or a link to the advert, we are happy to take a closer look.

Rubbish service, waste of money.

Over 1 week into advertising on PistonHeads. My car doesn’t come up on my saved search, and I think it very likely that it is the same for anyone else with a saved search - ie my car won’t come up unless a person searches newly, which a lot of people with an account won’t do. Also, the telephone number tab doesn’t go through to my phone unless it is pressed a second time. - initially just comes up with an error message. Presumably some people won’t bother to press it again as the error message will put them off.
Sent PistonHeads admin an email over 4 days ago - no reply other than the automated ‘we’ll get back to you’.
Truly terrible service and at this rate a total waste of money because less people will see the advert and then they won’t be able to reach me anyway.
The only contact I have had is from scammers via email trying to get me to visit bogus links.
Should have gone to autotrader or quite frankly anywhere else with software that actually works.
