My wife and I engaged Hugh Zhao of Mel…

My wife and I engaged Hugh Zhao of Mel Legal Partners Pty Ltd, trading as PanAus Partners Melbourne, to prepare our wills and powers of attorney, and paid a $1,000 deposit.

After receiving little communication, I called to ask some questions as part of my due diligence, including a question about the firm’s GST registration.

I found the lawyer’s response dismissive and condescending. He told me my questions had nothing to do with getting our wills done and said I had wasted six minutes of his time, for which I should be charged. My wife later spoke with him and had a similarly disappointing experience.

We decided not to proceed. We were then told that 15 minutes would be charged against our deposit. Approximately $820 was refunded, but only after my wife followed up by phone twice over the following week.

Based on our experience, the communication and handling of the refund fell well short of what we expected when engaging a lawyer for such important personal documents.

At the time of cancellation, we had not received any draft wills or powers of attorney.

Please be very wary of this company, in particular Hugh!
