Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 114 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people found the app to be problematic, with issues like constant crashing and an abundance of fake profiles. Customers also reported that the website was hard to use and that the user experience was generally poor, with many feeling that the platform's design encouraged payment for premium features. Reviewers also expressed dissatisfaction with the payment system, citing instances where they were blocked after making a payment or experienced issues with payment outcomes. The social media aspect was also criticized, with users noting that the platform often showed them profiles that were the opposite of their preferences and that many accounts were fake or unresponsive. Some people, however, mentioned having met lovely individuals through the app years ago and appreciated the "Questions" feature for helping them understand potential matches better. A few users also found it useful for making international friends and noted that it was one of the few fully functional free dating apps.

I've given one star reviews before, but this is different

I've given one star reviews before, but a special place in hell is resigned for a company who scams people into paying for a dating app, by enabling global fraud and deception of vulnerable people looking for love.

OK Cupid 10 years ago, was amazing. And I recommended it to anyone. Now, It's basically a site for scammers. It enables this by matching you with people 1000's miles away - despite your explicit preferences to be matched with people within 10 miles. And hence consider you have received many likes and pay them the frankly unethical fee of 30 pounds a month (higher than many utility bills). It used to be about around a third of this. But they realised they could exploit people more - since the changes that lockdown bought about - working from home etc. (not alone in this unfortunately).

95 percent of the profiles are fake - explicitly profiles from South East Asia and Africa. (and this includes my so-called "nearby matches" NW United Kingdom). Or people clearly posing as UK residents -with no checks whatsoever such as phone number.

The profile system also defaults you to being interested in lesbians and all other sexual preferences. when you answer you are a man looking for a woman and straight. (so it can sell you the idea you have many matches) and have people with different gender preferences hassled by men. That's descriminatory at best.

And why does it match you from people from the other side of the world? No matter what city/country you put in - it won't change it from West Africa - data you have never entered. Screen-shotted that to send to my Member of Parliament. That's clearly illegal.

Match.Com is an absolute disgrace. It should be illegal frankly, and those who profit for this kind of thing (exploitation/fraud) should be in prison.

**do not pay them any money in any circumstances, report it to your MP/bank. **

How Match Group baits and switches to rip you off

For U.S. users, OkCupid ignores the distance range you choose for profiles you want to see and you quickly accumulate likes from places like Africa and the Philippines.
OkCupid creates the false impression that many users are interested in you, then you pay to reveal your likes and find most just want to escape where they're living or want to tell you how economically challenged they are to persuade you to send them money.
i wouldn't be surprised if Match Group pays some of those profiles to continually operate on OkCupid to rip people off by manipulating them into paying for a membership only to find their many likes accumulated are useless.

This is one of the craziest scam apps…

This is one of the craziest scam apps out there.
I read many negative comments about fake profiles so i thought i'll try it out. Created the Profile, got 38 likes within a few days and then bought premium to see who liked me. 31 of 38 were profiles out of Asia and Africa, some from the middle east. 7 of 38 were local people.

Thats a rate of 81% being fake, which is insane.

I’d give a zero if I could.

OkCupid is a disgusting site / app that will ban you for no reason. I’ve never violated any of their guidelines but am banned within days of joining. The site is full of fake profiles seeking to steal from you. Shady untrustworthy low value garbage app run by garbage people. Enjoy your failed future OKC. Don’t join! avoid completely. They shouldn’t be allowed to operate. Will be reporting them to the BBB!

Wow this is rubbish - What a joke, so FAKE

Wow this is rubbish, used to be good.
Now owned by the Match Group, it is terrible.
Customer support in dire.

Might as well be African / Asian dating. All profiles say London, not many beaches and palms trees in London?
OK you might be on holiday, and live in tin shed at the weekend.
But Match don't care. It's all ££££ to them.
Pay to be member, and you'll get the odd like.
Stop Paying - I have 450 + likes in a month, impressive, fell it once and never again. Not one from the UK!!!

I am now emailing all the Corporate investors, Google who owns shares in Match Group.
Tell them what you think :)

Update - The Corporate investors don't care. Told me to contact OKC - while they count their winnings of gulable users of the Match Group income.

Go figure. Corporate greed rules !!!

Very sketchy, trying to get refund for supposed "autorenew"

Very sketchy. Maybe they've changed management, not the same as a few years ago. I decided to try the premium once again, but then they just now pushed my "autorenew" payment BEFORE THE ACTUAL RENEW DATE.
I've tried multiple times to reach support, no response, none. Also, I noticed that I had been getting a lot of "likes", whch you can only see with the premium account. Mysteriously, only a couple of likes showed up after I purchased the premium . . . from other areas (Philipines, Africa, etc.). Whatever their deal is, this is very sketchy, not going to buy any more premium accounts.

I wish I'd read these reviews before I bothered.

The site is a total scam. Full of African girls in Africa. I had a whole bunch of likes, but then when I subscribed. Not one of them was local to me. As a paid member, I expect to be able to send messages, and those messages are flagged to the person, but no.
The only ones which get flagged are the ones which you SuperLike which you pay again for.
Total scam.

Now I see why Online Dating is Trending Downward

Worst app ever. How the Match Group (match.com) bought this and hasn't regulated it is beyond me. If anything the federal government should investigate all these dating apps, but especially Okcupid. They shouldn't be allowed on the marketplace with their app when such deception is being portrayed on their platform.

Not only that, but the site has zero customer service. I've written them 3x with zero response.

You only get likes from Africa, Philippines and I think some places I saw in the carribean. I'd say 85% of the women you swipe right on are either fake accounts or don't subscribe so you can't get any thing there.

The app itself and UI/UX isn't bad. Among all the dating apps we've tried this month this was the best one for user experience. A little hard to get at first but after you become a pro at it. The app has a ton of bugs though.

Also, I’ve written several women and there’s no place to see where a copy of your message to them has been saved so there’s that... that sucks.

Wasted $50 which I'm going to request a refund. My advice, don't even bother with these people.

This company is totally awful

This company is totally awful. I have had a bad experience and they do not care enough to look into it.. They are more concerned about the privacy. I am not asking to divulge any information, however, I do believe that this person does not really exist, and has come back on their site under another name. They ask me for the individuals info, which they clearly must have,, DO NOT use this website, it is absolutely AWFUL.. and they do not care about your safety as other dating websites do

Yet another scam dating site

Yet another scam dating site. You pay the monthly rate but don’t have access to all of the site. That is of course more money. And they don’t want to just charge the difference. They want to charge you for an entire month at the increased rate. Like they are really going to send a refund for the unused portion of your first subscription. It totally locked up the entire site. Take your $35 and set it on fire. At least you can get the ashes from that where Okcupid gives nothing.

JUST CHANGED MY LOCATION AM IN AFRICA;KENYA

Your so lazy. No thanks for report and doing our job. For a paid service, you do nothing to vet your profiles. That is really concerning.
As i keep reporting this and you keep ignoring me. I put my findings on trustpilot.

Thats what i sent to them. They never acknowledge the reports you send them. They got a bussines model of sit back and let cash role in. Use to be decent platform, and like others have said its like the rest and pretty poor.

Manipulative Tactics

I’ve been on and off OkCupid for years, and while it’s as effective as other dating apps, their tactics to get users to pay or resubscribe bother me. Here’s my experience: I typically receive about 2-3 likes per week. However, last week, for the third time this year, I canceled my paid subscription and switched to the free version. Within 24 hours, I suddenly received over 20 new likes. This is a pattern I’ve noticed before. When I renew my paid subscription, I often see over 40 likes waiting for me. While a few of these seem legit, most are obviously fake, often from the Philippines and Africa, which never happens while I’m paying. These manipulative tactics are a shi**y attempt by shi**y people to exploit people looking for genuine connections.

A Contribution To Modern Loneliness & Isolation

OK Cupid was amazing because users created or drove much of the content, which meant that the questions and quizzes could be hilarious, clever, & very affinity group /community specific. Activity and matches were based on the answers and not photos. Sidenote- in recent years studies have shown how visual/photo oriented social apps tend to have a more socially dividing and negative psychological impact vs text & chat oriented apps, which tend to bring people together.
So if match.com cared what was good for making matches vs making profits… they’d go back to their previous model.

But back to the good old days:
All the user created content made perfect material for icebreakers and ongoing conversations, and as of yet, I’ve never seen any other better method for creating affinity on a dating platform. In those years from 2004 to 2014, okCupid was not only a place just for finding romance, but for maintaining and finding platonic friends, even for people not interested in another’s gender, because so much of the content was just culturally and personally significant.

The wide range and poignancy of these conversations is also why OK Cupid started to become cited widely in the media and provided frequent rich fodder for blogs, magazines, news, and even academic research.

The behind-the-scenes staff at Okcupid seemed to be focused on keeping all the conversation flowing while improving the matching algorithms and recording, learning from, & publishing the above mentioned statistics.
Particularly groundbreaking and revealing were the data they released on ethnicity and racial preference, which had been published in I believe more than one national publication.
But since 2019, at least in the M4M dating world it’s really nothing like what it used to be. It’s a depressing ghost of its former self, and I’m far more used to finding people who are only on it for a couple months before deleting their account, or people in the Philippines than anyone who is local and interested in a relationship.
It’s gone from an app where I and other friends made lifelong loves, friends, & even business connections; a platform where almost every single peer off mine, regardless of gender, used it regularly to some degree - to a platform no one I know currently uses.

Think of all the love and friendship In the world that is no longer being generated because of match’s misinformed and greedy decision-making.
