Not a 5* hotel

Dislikes of this hotel, although we paid all inclusive we felt they were always trying hard to make more money out of you. Example ; we booked the steak restaurant, at booking we wasn’t told it would be an extra charge we found that when we arrived at our reservation. In the Italian I couldn’t have a drink I wanted as that wasn’t included, except it was in the bar, no sense. I asked if it was possible to sing happy birthday for my partners big birthday this didn’t happen although they said this was something they do. I complained at the time no apology. Our room was scruffy, dark the wardrobe doors didn’t close so when you opened the front door these would clash. The patio area to our room was never used as it was dark with a dirty pathetic sofa. Early Reserved sun beds around the pool is a problem the hotel need to deal with this. The pools are too cold to use. Half the staff in the buffet restaurant have bad attitudes, also seemed short staffed all the time even though the hotel wasn’t at full capacity. Due to a storm the hotel had closed certain restaurants but they should have been more pro active to open up the buffet restaurant earlier instead of us having to pay extra for room service to not have to wait so long for the only restaurant that was open for lunch. The mini bar should be included in the room if you have paid all inclusive. So much attention to detail to call this a 5* hotel.
The positive was the evening entertainment.
We won’t return to this hotel been to much nicer hotel’s for the same money.

I stayed at Melia Dunas Cape Verde…do not book this hotel

I stayed at Melia Dunas Cape Verde January 2026 I would have to say it was the worst holiday of my life. I take an annual holiday every Jan with a very good friend - we both have separate rooms so we can enjoy each others company but equally have own space. From day 1 both rooms were awful - her room was under an air conditioning - very noisy and she didn’t get any sleep. My room had musty towels and were not changed despite me asking several times. Also had some sort infestation as awoke in the morning with bites down the side of my face. Whilst we eventually got our rooms changed, guest experience were rude and cagey when we asked to speak to the manager. Day 5 and the room has been cleaned once. Eventually we spoke to Romina - guest services manager- and to say she was nonchalant is an under statement. She offered a spa treatment but said we had to sign a disclaimer - I thought it was more important to get the message out there about this awful accommodation, than take up this offer. Do not stay at this hotel under any circumstances - every day I would steady flows of guests making similar complaints. Cape Verde is beautiful but find somewhere else to stay.

Melia Cala Galdana Menorca

We stayed at the Melia Cala Galdana in Menorca for two weeks from the 29th September 2025 on half board. Everything about the hotel and location is very special apart from the buffet main restaurant. The food in this restaurant is shockingly poor. Lack of variety, servers are rude, the food is luke warm and the plates are cold. The restaurant is enclosed in plastic covers in October to protect guests from the cold and wind but unfortunately it still remains chilly. We understand that major refurbishment is planned from November 2025 when the hotel closes for the season, so this situation may be resolved in the future. The two restaurants Casa Nostra and Cape Neo are excellent. The staff in these restaurants could not do enough for us. A special thank you to all but in particular Victoria in Casa Nostra. We also wanted to say a massive thank you to Andrea who really saved our holiday for us by upgrading us to The Level. Without the upgrade I really do not know what we would have done for two weeks, we certainly could not have used the buffet restaurant. Your care and attention are greatly appreciated. The staff and food in The Level are fantastic too. However, the pricing of the food and drinks in both restaurants are very expensive compared to other locations and resorts. The safe in the rooms are free but they charge for water over dinner. The cushioned loungers around the pool are very comfortable but even on a hot day the main pool remains extremely cold. We would recommend this is heated. We still believe that when this hotel was a Sol 20 years ago and we were constant guests the food and entertainment were excellent. The entertainment now does not compare to the fabulous shows held then. It's such a shame when Melia decide to upgrade a Sol hotel like this one and the Sol Gorriones in Fuerteventura to a Melia, all they seem to do is take away it's heart. We have such specials memories of the Sol Gavilanes and Sol Gorriones, both were our absolute favourites in the past Sometimes progress really is not progress at all.

Not five star - Melia Varadero

We arrived at the Melia Varadero hotel (Cuba) on a coach transfer from Habana so there were a few of us checking in at the same time. On arrival, we received a frosty reception from the front desk staff. Our room was on the 4th floor and the bedroom was lovely but the bathroom dated (they seem to have refurbished the bedroom and not the bathroom). The bath looked dirty and l don’t think the room was cleaned very well. The sink was also constantly blocked though I called twice to have someone look at it. It would be a bit better for the day but then clog up again. We asked to change rooms several times but they could never accommodate us (even though we offered to pay more) and, in the end, we were brushing our teeth over the bath tub.

However, the staff in the many restaurants were brilliant. Special mention goes to Nayn (in the Cuban and Tex Mex a la carte restaurant) and Roberto in the main restaurant. They made us feel very welcome and pampered and they often found clever ways to solve problems. Lewis (24 hr restaurant) and Lily (spa) were also wonderful and helpful.

We can see why this was originally a 5-star hotel but it requires a few improvements before it could be worthy of claiming 5-star status today. These include the problem that the whole third floor is being refurbished. On weekdays, the noise and banging were loud and the clouds of dust running up the central lobby were concerning (concrete dust is not good to breathe in). Finally, for breakfast, the queue for omelettes was always very long; they could do with another omelette station as sometimes we gave up waiting.

I don’t want to sound too negative as Cuban people are amazing. We had an amazing time despite some of the above and we would definitely go back given the chance.

Then on return to make an official complaint they fail to respond to emails after offering a comp stay for one guest even though a party of 6 that had a ruined trip.

ME Melia Malta

I would give zero stars if possible!!

We booked a week's holiday to Malta at ME Melia St Julian's for our wedding anniversary paying extra for a sea view room.

Within a week of travel we received an email from Jet2 to inform us that the rooftop bar, and Gino d'campo restaurant would be unavailable during our stay. It was a main reason for choosing that particular hotel. We were not provided an alternative.

On arrival at the hotel, the reception staff demanded a credit card from me. I said I didn't have one, they then insisted I leave a 500€ deposit. I explained the money was for holiday spends and if I used the amenities I would settle the bill immediately. They would not accept this and after some negotiation I was able to leave 200€ deposit.

The room allocated was beautifully appointed in keeping with the Melia brand. It stretched around to the side and back of the hotel. We noticed that whatever room paid for in the hotel afforded a sea view, however the main sea view was at the front of the hotel. Ultimately, we paid extra for a sea view room that we would've had anyways.

On the first day sitting on our balcony the crane from the rooftop was delivering and receiving pallets of things such as glass panels. We initially found this funny because we had thought we had escaped the construction for a week from where we live that has been going on for over two years. One amusement quickly wore off after realising this was a constant annoyance. Coupled with that, we were awoke to works taking place directly outside the hotel every morning any time after 6am. Buzz saws, banging, drilling.

There was also a grid on the main road outside our room that traffic was going over day and night. It sounded like somebody firing a starter pistol. Being on a busy main road into the area It was constant even throughout the nighttime we had to sleep with the balcony windows closed to try and drown it out This lessened the sound but you could still hear it.

Another noise nuisance was the constant sirens going past. Emergency services vehicle are constant. It's like living in downtown Los Angeles during a riot. It sounds like an exaggeration, but this is the reality.

The straw that broke the camels back occurred on the penultimate day. Early one evening when returning to the room around 6pm, there was a huge crane directly outside the hotel facing out balcony. Throughout, and I mean throughout the night there was banging and clanging from the roof top while the crane was being dismantled. Around 2am they began transporting parts down right outside our balcony (of which I have footage). This lasted till around 7am. I attempted to call the reception several times and nobody picked up. I am absolutely gobsmacked that the hotel gave no warning or apology for this.

It was at this time I made an online complaint to Jet2 that was actioned some 3 weeks later. I was basically called a liar as the hotel denied construction work was ongoing other than that night simply because I didn't have the foresight to take pictures of the crane on other days. I didn't have the foresight because I was not intending to make a complaint. If I had, I would've taken pictures of the crane working every day on the roof and other unfinished sections of the hotel such as rooms and bathing areas as proof.

I have stayed in Melia hotels in Spain and Madeira and have always enjoyed my time in them. This was particularly disappointing. The staff throughout the hotel were excellent apart from the reception, who were uncaring, unfriendly and should not be the face of the Melia brand. When asked did I enjoy my stay and I explained that I didn't giving my reasons, I didn't even get an apology.

Very VERY poor customer service. Avoid ME Melia in Malta.

One star is too much in my experience

One star is too much in my experience. The customer service is the worst I have ever experienced in my whole life… I always contact the hotel I would like to stay in beforehand, in order to find out, whether there are any advantages for me as an Amex customer. I was told that next to the discount in the app, I would be given a 10% discount. I completed my booking. And this is where the horror began: I contacted Amex, who themselves confirmed that there is no coop between Meliá and Amex. I wrote an email to Meliá shortly before my trip. As the email wasn’t replied to, I wrote a second one. The answer stated that there is no discount although the coworker from Melia even stated it in her email. So I was basically ripped off… I will also write a comment about the service in Meliá Vienna itself which was horrible for the price that I have payed.

PREPARE For A BIG SHOCK
Over the next 4ths a complete refurbishing programme is takin in place on every room, the work started 2wks into my stay, jet two said to expect minimum disruption on the tenth floor of the building, The work is goin on over a four month period & starts @8.30 am & goes on cotinuesly until 6pm, there are long shoots from the 10th floor down to the ground &rubble comes crashing down the shoots into large metal skips at ground level.
The dust created is like a bomb goin off & blows straight over the swimming pool.since the work started 2nd week Nov not a sole has been in the pool or been able to sit on the sun beds &because it was such lovely weather you needed to open your patio door but the clouds of dust came in choking you.the vechicles passing the hotel in the street were having to use headlights to avoid collision, The CRASH of rubble was like a Plane has hit the building continually all day. The manager said it was at a higher level that a decision to remain open was made, it was a DISGRACE be well advised avoid over next 4months

Melia Dunas-Sal Cabo Verde

If you want to go to Melia Dunas reed this:

We went to the Melia Dunas on Sal in Cape Verde from 7 to 19 November 2024 with Tui and it was not the holiday we had in mind.

We booked the Level, because there is extra service offered, with a private check-in desk (there was none), extra cushion on the beach chairs, more than half of the chairs had no cushion (see added video) since we both have a bad back, but in the morning it was a struggle for a bed with pillow.

We still must get bathrobes, slippers and extra beach towels for The Level. And we asked for that every day for a week. The free beachtowel that everyone gets that could be exchanged daily, could only be exchanged after three days, because there were not enough towels. We also got to know that the hotel was overbooked and everyone that was overbooked got The Level for free to compensate their troubles.
We immediately reported the bathrobes, slippers, and beach towels to the reception the same evening on November 7. The first day that your hostess from Tui was on location, we went to her for the complaints, including that the food in the main restaurant was cold.

We also went to the Level restaurant for breakfast and after we had some fruit and coffee, we decided to leave after waiting for our eggs for one hour, we did tell the waiter that we were leaving. Later we heard that people had to wait 2.5 hours for their breakfast. This has also been reported to your hostess and a compensation of 250 euros has been given for it, while the extra costs for the Level are 287 euros per person. The Meliá offers a day of Spa as compensation, but since my sister got an immune disease, she is not allowed to go in.

From 11 to 12 November the misery really started, and we both got diarrhea. For both reported to the hostess of Tui, who created the report for my sister properly and there was also an email from that, for my there should also be one, but that email came in on the day of departure November 19 stating that the report was made on November 14, after we went to report to your hostess every day that the second email had not arrived. So, i was ill from November 12. On November 14, we also submitted all complaints to Mrs. de Brito de Pina, she is one of the reservation managers in the hotel.
So, we had been in the hotel for a week, and nothing had happened yet. What we also told her was that there was a guest toilet, along the boulevard for a few days as in the photo and the rest of the doors were locked. We don't know if that has been resolved, but we have seen it like this for 3 days, after that we have not been there anymore. When we returned to our room that day on November 14, there was a letter in the door, asking us to stay inside. The letter is attached . We have been inside on the balcony for 6 days, only used our own toilet in the room. We only went out to eat, otherwise we would have starved with the speed of serving in this hotel.
Everything has overdue maintenance, handrails are full of splinters, beach beds are broken, tiles are gone in the edges of the swimming pools. There was most off the time, no bottle of Coke Zero or Sprite Zero available at the Level swimming pool.
We came to the Melia because our previous experiences were very good. My sister has been to Melia Dunas before, and everything was perfectly arranged.

We are trying to be compensated but the only thing the Meliá wil do is giving points for a next time. We don’t agree with that

Never we have stayed in such a bad Melia hotel.

Paradisus buyer beware with this chain…all that glitters is not gold…offered an upgrade? Sounds great and reasonable….make sure you ask for it in writing…. Oh yes one price then all of a sudden that was per night which was not what they said at check in…..many other hotel chains out there that don’t steal your $ and ruin your vacation…..sadly they made our well earned vacation a burden financially…..check out other options and always ask for paperwork before agreeing to anything financially…shady business practices….again beware and check out other chains and their reviews…In Punta Cana try Hyatt Zilara/Ziva great gated section so no constant beach sellers, Royalton Bávaro also very nice. Check out other brands no matter the destination. Seriously tried to work with them but they just doubled and tripled down on taking no responsibility to do the right thing just strung me along and then said you are a liar not we made an error. Try another hotel and save your hard earned vacation and $

Beware Melia Circle con artists

Hotel in Tenerife is beautiful but we were conned into attending a sales pitch by Melia Circle, it’s a holiday club, designed to get you to sign up to a membership with the offer of a 3 course meal for 45 minutes of your time. When I said I would listen, think about options and then decide, the rep went to get a manager and tried to say I wouldn’t sign today. The first thing they said was there isn’t a commitment required.

I found these people to be rude especially if you didn’t agree to sign on the dotted line, my holiday experience has been soured by these glorified con artists, please do not entertain them, waste your time or agree to part with your cash.

I hope people read this review and avoid Melia Circle at all costs.

Costa Dorada in Salou isn't a 4 star its more 3 star at the most . Stayed here in May weather was good however this place is really in need of a referb. Lots of groups of children school trips attended when i was there so there goes my peaceful holiday. Maybe this is something they fo to fill the place in Low season The rooms are tired and the reception area is dated thin walls so you hear your neighbours.Sunbeds need replacing. Paid 28 euros 10 refunded on . leaving for a safe. So was expecting more from this brand of hotels. However it has to be said the staff make this place and the food is very good. The welcoming people at breakfast and dinner were fab especially thehard working guys on the grill. Also the 2 young men on reception were very helpful and informed me of train times to BARCELONA. Its about a 10 15 min walk to the beach. Oh and no uk TV channels if this something you look for. Well done staff at Costa Dorada you have little to work with but you truly did make my stay better. Thank you and Melia I hope this goes someway to improve this place.

Excellence in customer satisfaction.

We can categorically say that the Melia Madeira Mare is the very best hotel where we have the pleasure in taking our holidays.
Over our recent 12 week’s holiday, as in previous holidays, we have seen the management team demonstrate their expected quality standards at all times to their staff colleagues, who in turn deliver excellent customer service. It is very pleasing to meet the same friendly and professional staff team each time we holiday. There is a ‘family atmosphere’ of happy employees undertaking their roles. As visitors, we are always greeted as ‘family friends’. Each of the hotel services provided during each of our holidays is of the highest possible quality, and we notice at all times each employee ‘goes the extra mile’ in undertaking their roles.
We have many amazing memories of each holiday at the hotel, and each is personalised for ourselves, as the valued customers.
Two of the USP’s of the hotel is excellent communications at all levels and the quality of each team member.
Looking forward to many more wonderful holidays at this amazing hotel.

Now we wanted back our money, they said OK and picked up the wrong kordelset by GLS and now, again several weeks later I still wait for the money and they are not answering anymore. Very dissatisfied

My room phone did not work. I reported it immediately at reception. I was told someone would attend to it straight away. Five days later when I left, my phone still did not work. No one came to fix it.
The sliding door to my bathroom was jammed and off rail. It took huge effort to slide it open or closed.
There was poor information about how to connect to Wi-Fi. I had to go back to reception to find out how to do it. (Because my phone didn’t work I had to go to reception every time I needed something).
No clear instructions about the TV. Very dated access to local channels only. No Netflix, movies etc
Lowest Air con setting was 19 degrees which was not cool enough during the day. This could not be overidden
Queue to use the on-site restaurants were long and slow moving. We were on a conference and had limited time for lunch. Table water was charged extra at a cost of€25 which is extortionate.
Coffee machine in the restaurant was not oermitted to ge used by residents who attended the conference because they were concerned that non-residents would use it. We were physically pulled away from using it by a member of staff who said it could not be used because it was being cleaned. This was a lie. It was not cleaned. They should just have said it was not for use rather than lying.
There was always a queue at check in and the process was really slow.
I’m n check out, there was a c he argue on my bill for a bottle of water that I had not ordered. I was told because it was signed for it had to be paid. €25 for a bottle of water I had not ordered. I insisted that I was not going to pay for something I had not ordered but I was told there was nothing they could do. I said a third time I was not going to pay and as a valued customer, they could find a way to adjust the bill to ensure I was not expected to pay for something I had never ordered. Eventually they conceded and I wasn’t charged. Even wine wasn’t charged at €25 per bottle. To charge this for water, especially when I hadn’t ordered it, was an insult.
Table service on the terrace was exceptionally slow and it was nothing to do with staff-customer ratio , just a reluctance of staff to engage with customers. It took 30 mins before someone came over to take our order and when they did, the cocktails on the menu were not available to be ordered without going to the bar. The waitress was very surly.
The bar staff in the bar next to the disco were very disengaged. I stood there for 10 mins whilst 5 members of staff cleaned glasses, topped up stock and generally just had conversations with each other. On two occasions I asked for service and was told ‘yes lady please be patient’ before finally being told it was table service only and to take a seat snd someone would come to take my order. This took another 15 mins.
In general, the customer service was surly, impatient and rude by a large number of staff. The exception to this were the bell hop staff at the front door, the housekeeping maids and the pool concierge - all of who me were gracious and polite and could not do enough to help in a friendly way.
