surprised by how quickly the order was fulfilled and shipped. sure, shipping and duty isn't cheap but due to prices being decently lower than Canadian retailers it just about comes out in the wash.

The Pro-Tech Runt 5 immediately gives…

The Pro-Tech Runt 5 immediately gives the impression of being a small automatic knife that was built to a genuinely high standard. The blade deploys with an exceptionally crisp and energetic snap, while the lockup remains solid despite the knife’s compact size. There is no noticeable blade play or sense of mechanical instability. The machining and finish of the aluminum handle are also excellent, and among the small automatic knives I own, the Runt 5 feels like the most refined and precisely assembled.

The button has a particularly distinctive texture. Rather than feeling like smooth, polished metal, it has a dry, finely textured bead-blasted surface that provides good traction and clear tactile feedback. It contributes to the impression that the knife was carefully considered down to its smaller components, rather than being designed solely around the novelty of fast automatic deployment.

Unfortunately, the factory edge on my example was a major disappointment. The bevels were noticeably asymmetrical, and the edge angle was far too obtuse. For a knife using MagnaCut, the cutting performance felt surprisingly dull and inefficient. Considering the price of the knife and Pro-Tech’s reputation, the factory sharpening felt less like a minor imperfection and more like a quality-control issue. The rest of the knife felt highly refined, while the edge seemed completely out of place.

I eventually reprofiled the blade to 18 degrees per side using a Work Sharp Elite. I then added a light 40-degree inclusive microbevel with the brown and white rods of a Spyderco Sharpmaker. After this treatment, the cutting performance improved dramatically, while the microbevel provided additional edge stability and made routine maintenance easier. Once properly sharpened, it almost felt like a completely different knife. The MagnaCut blade itself was never the problem; the original factory geometry simply failed to take advantage of it.

There are also clear practical limitations. The blade is extremely short, so it is not ideal for cutting larger materials or performing prolonged work. It is perfectly capable of opening packages, cutting cable ties, trimming cord, and handling other small everyday tasks, but it should not be mistaken for a serious general-purpose work knife.

The absence of a manual safety also made me slightly uncomfortable when I first began carrying it. The button is not especially easy to activate accidentally, and the knife is manufactured with excellent precision, but carrying an automatic knife loose in a pocket still creates a degree of psychological concern that never disappears completely.

Even so, the appeal of the Runt 5 cannot be judged by utility alone. Its real character comes from the powerful action produced by such a compact mechanism, the solid lockup, the precise machining, and the feeling of operating a finely made mechanical object. There are more practical and cost-effective knives available, but few offer the same combination of compact size, build quality, American manufacturing, and sheer enjoyment.

Overall, the Pro-Tech Runt 5 MagnaCut initially disappointed me because of its poor factory edge, but after being properly reprofiled, the quality of the underlying knife became much more apparent. Its short blade imposes definite limitations as a cutting tool, but in terms of action, construction, portability, and ownership experience, it is the most complete automatic knife in my collection.

It is unquestionably a good knife, but at this price point, the owner should not have to rebuild the edge before the knife can perform at its best. The Runt 5 eventually became an excellent knife for me, but it was not perfect out of the box.
